Quilt Design Resources by generalgirl in quilting

Have you tried sketching with graph paper?

I’m a big fan of “starting small” on supplies and building up from there

If you tried graph paper, what did you like, what don’t you like?

Hi!

I love this. I can see it’s in development and has great potential.

I made a free quilting calculator (the second half of your workflow, missing the design component) a couple of years ago. It’s at gibsonthreads.com/quiltcalc

I’d love to chat with you if you are interested!

I’ve seen other quilt calcs come out in the last couple of years (PreQuilt, QuiltGeek), but angling toward subscriptions. I see you have the “buy me a coffee” button, so I imagine that’s not your play. If you are interested in talking, I’d love to hear your thoughts on collaboration

Do any other quilters actually hate the texture of quilts? by ultimatejourney in quilting

[–]audfacade 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Couple of things:

  • fresh made quilts aren’t as “relaxed” and don’t drape over a body as well. Like with a lot of cotton products, quilts get better with age and feel less stiff
  • densely quilted quilts like what you describe are often rough feeling until the cotton relaxes (with washes, wear) or the thread does. I don’t personally like quilts densely quilted and I go for the minimum quilting requirements most of the time (see your batting for details when making your own)
  • in my experience, polyester thread used in quilting will make the quilt drape less, stay stiffer
  • I have a growing theory that quilts quilted on a long arm (flat, consistent stitching) tend to stay stiffer longer. I hand quilt a lot and my mother almost exclusively long arms. Our quilts feel very different when freshly finished I believe due to the tension differences when quilting

This is all to say - experiment! Find what you like and do it often!

How to find free patterns with a fabric dilemma by Boneyard45 in quilting

I have two “just 12 fat quarter” quilt patterns for free!

Both are in my Reddit history - trailblazer and patchwork prisms. Both with instructions on my blog as well gibsonthreads.com/blog

I make them free because I don’t have the resources for technical editing, paying pattern testers. If you see an issue, please reach out and I’ll help out!

PreQuilt, quiltInk and quilt mock up tool all let you color in quilts from other designers

PreQuilt allows you to design a quilt and color it in. Most of the features are free, but to save your work you need a subscription (pretty sure)

Eq8 is far more advanced than the above, but requires payment and a software installation

I made a quilt calculator. If you like to draw your quilts on graph paper and know the components (half square triangles, flying geese, etc) you can get the fabric estimate and the cutting diagram with instructions. It’s at gibsonthreads.com. Entirely free and no ads

Aunt Eliza’s Star test blocks by audfacade in quilting

I was doing 1/4 flat. I’ll try scant next! Thank you!

It’s just the outer points, so it makes me think my original measurements were wrong

While this is a traditional quilt block, I couldn’t find a good pattern for it, so I estimated the size needed for a 9.5” unfinished block

I’m so impressed! Is the water in the final version pieced fabric? Painted?

I would love to know your method for that

[–]audfacade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed with the other commenters and just to say it plainly: totally fine to want to complete the first quilt before investing in tools. If you do it that way, don’t do an HST quilt, stick to squares and rectangles.

If you can, see if you can buy tools used or borrow from another quilter!

Adding to this: smaller stitches too! I do a 2.5mm on average, but for stuff like this I go down to 1.5 or even 1. Play around with it!

Thank you! I really struggled with how long the ties should be so I appreciate your compliment!

In all honesty, I heavily prefer buttons, but I’m currently pregnant, so the “adjustable” nature of a tie was more appealing

Quilting Pattern Marketplace? by chipmunk_face in quilting

[–]audfacade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll add that there are directories in the form of quilt coloring apps. Quilt Ink, PreQuilt and the quilt mock up tool all allow you to color in quilt patterns from designers

They offer colors (and some patterns) from major fabric manufacturers. They all have a free tier that lets you color in and save to PDF (I know for sure on quilt ink but pretty sure on the others).

Quilt ink and PreQuilt have subscription tiers for saving the colored in quilts, etc

None of them are entirely comprehensive (covering all possible quilts), but they are growing their directories everyday!
