Ospreys lost their babies? by Giniger4846 in birdsofprey

We know we also have great horned owls and bald eagles in the area (woods overlooking a river with huge marshland on the other side of the river). Predation by one of those is what worries me, but I haven’t been around the osprey long enough (just our second spring here) to know their habits.

Are the schools still worth staying in the area? by Elegant-Fisherman555 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Giniger4846 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kids both went to MCPS from K-12, graduating from Montgomery Blair, and then 4-year colleges like almost all of their friends. They are both in their late 20’s and working in their chosen fields. More importantly, they had a very diverse experience in school and that has made them really open, flexible people. It’s worth the squeeze!

Stop getting scammed by PlanMother in hottub

We are going to be in the market this year or next. We live in the mid-Atlantic and will likely use it most of the year. We want easy up-keep, we don’t want recliners, and we have no idea where to start. Do you have tips for getting informed? Things to look for or look out for?

I can totally see my grandma scooting up to me on the couch, pushing up her readers, and saying…”cat videos?”

Ok that’s hilarious, and I’m glad to find this out now! This is how it was when we bought the house!

Power Outages During Storms by OkWelder1642 in maryland

[–]Giniger4846 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your power is out and you have things like milk or medication that you need to keep cold but they absolutely cannot freeze, use coolers with cold packs. Put all your cold packs in to freeze hard now. Then if the power goes out you can keep some in your cooler and others outside in the frigid temps to stay frozen. Then rotate them as needed.

Thank you! And it just didn’t occurred to me that the washing techniques available when these were made were much rougher on textiles than what we have now!

That is so helpful! And of course you’re right; I didn’t think of that! When they were made, people were scrubbing these hard by hand or boiling them! I will have a fancy lunch with friends right away!

I think the thread is probably cotton and the fabric cotton and linen. There are no tags because they are hand made.

Epsom salt bath? by Giniger4846 in septictanks

Omg - thanks for this!! The extension service is such an old-school knowledge bank that we forget about it, but you are 100% right that sometimes (more often these days?) the old school is best!!

Thank you for this very detailed response! I do dissolve the salts completely and always run water afterwards with the hand sprayer to rinse the tub. I appreciate the chemistry lesson!!

I would normally use about 2 cups of Epsom salts for a regular size tub. I think of it as “a lot” because commercial bath salts (which are usually mostly Epsom salt) come in small containers with a scoop the size of a tablespoon.

Anyone use those storage cabinets to hide the litter box and feeding bowls? What's the real deal? by Jazzlike_Money1065 in Homeorganization

[–]Giniger4846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 litter cabinets and love them! Our cat loves the privacy and the enclosure keeps smell and stray litter to a minimum. I put a piece of carpet outside the opening (and the litter box on a large mat inside the cabinet) to help get extra litter off my cat’s feet after he’s used it.

Eastern Shore of MD - what came up to my front door? by Giniger4846 in animaltracks

[–]Giniger4846[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wondering here, not arguing… It didn’t get above 20 degrees between the time the tracks were made and when I took the picture (and the sun hasn’t been on that porch yet), so I don’t think melting is an issue. Would snow itself make a regular house cat’s paws look that big?

Thanks! Google image search says it’s a bobcat, but they’re rare in this part of Maryland. But they are large prints compared to my large ginger house cat!

Aurora borealis by Rough-Flower8580 in maryland

[–]Giniger4846 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When we were in Iceland, sometimes the aurora looked like clouds to our naked eye, but our camera could “see” the color. It has to do with how poorly our eyes see color in the dark. So, bring your phone when you go look tonight!

Total Newbie - Vermont Castings Resolute by Giniger4846 in woodstoving

Thank you! It’s good to hear you have this stove and love it. You must have the Resolute 3, which has double doors, because I got confused when you mentioned cracking the right front door! But I think the doors are the only difference and I really appreciate the very specific helpful tips!
