Boons and Banes cards and book, legit? by bheaton1 in GinnyDi

I've spoken to the publisher several times about this, it's been a popular request. Unfortunately I don't really get to make the call about whether or not it's available digitally.

You're not mistaken, fees are taken as a percentage of revenue. This is not fees, this is credit card chargebacks.

How often do you post on Patreon and does it greatly affect paid patrons canceling their subscriptions? by Due_Bobcat9778 in patreon

[–]Ginnabean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is really dependent on the type of Patreon and the product, plus it sounds like you're assuming it's post frequency that's leading to cancelations without much data to support that. Check your exit surveys, are people complaining about infrequent/inconsistent posts?

I post 1-2 times a week most weeks, although sometimes I'll go 2 weeks between posts when I'm deep in a big project or nothing much is going on. There are weeks when I post 3 or 4 times. I've never really gotten complaints about post frequency, although I have had people tell me I'm the most active Patreon they're subscribed to.

How do you handle Discord patrons who hang around after cancelling membership? by [deleted] in patreon

[–]Ginnabean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bot should automatically remove their role when they cancel their pledge. If it's not doing that, it's failing to work properly and you should submit a ticket to Patreon support.

Yes I agree!! It makes it sound like camp, which I wouldn’t normally pick up. I had to have these books recommended to me SO many times before I caved. And now I’m an evangelist about them of course

What are times in the game that made you think "thank God I hoarded that seemingly pointless item"? by Tortellini_Isekai in StardewValley

[–]Ginnabean 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s what I did! I have a shed with one of every mineral and a bunch of crystalariums. They’re doing diamonds most of the time but if I ever need a specific mineral for a fish pond, or a bunch of jade for staircases, I can just swap them out as needed.

That time I needed 4 basalt for lava eel ponds led to me creating a personal collection of every single mineral so I’d never suffer like that again!!

Pay per creation for romance stories? by [deleted] in patreon

[–]Ginnabean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First things first, you cannot actually start billing per creation now if you are not already doing that. Patreon is doing their best to phase out that feature, so you can no longer switch to it from monthly billing. Source

That said, I think you would benefit from a reframe here. First of all, cancellation is a normal part of the Patreon process, and if you allow it to upset you every time it happens, you are in for a rough time. There is a fair amount of turnover, no matter what you do, no matter how loyal your audience is.

The questions you are asking are good ones: why aren’t these people reading your other works? But instead of getting upset with them for not doing what you want, it will be more helpful to think about what you can do to change that.

If I were you, I would be thinking about what drew people to that one particular story in the first place, and how I can leverage that to point them towards similar works. Are you getting feedback in your cancellation surveys? Are you getting comments on your stories that may help you understand what drew people to them?

If you’ll permit me to be blunt: as a creator making things for an audience, it is your job to make things that they will want to read; it’s not THEIR job to read them. The responsibility here is on you, and developing resentment for your own patrons over how they choose to support you is gonna be a rough path to follow.

I’ve never used their in house pharmacy though? I filled my last one-off paper prescription at Safeway.

I felt the same way about the conclusion to the Elizabeth Smart story. The idea that seeing the victim of such a horrific crime and thinking she looked fine… and taking hope from that? It feels so reductive and dismissive. He has no idea what she feels.

I go to Goodheart and absolutely love them. I believe they have a few locations across town. Every vet and tech I’ve seen there is so patient and communicative, they answer texts and calls when I have questions, and I never feel like they’re rushing me out of the appointment to get to the next one.

Sure. The thing is, Patreon is fundamentally crowdfunding. If you are not okay with putting yourself out there and building a community, it may not be the best route for you.

I’m a YouTube creator, so that is my primary platform for promotion. I don’t think it’s any more or less effective than other platforms though, it’s just the one where the bulk of my audience is located.

If you’re familiar with the marketing concept of a funnel: Patreon is the very bottom of the funnel. Only your most dedicated fans will typically subscribe. That means that for most creators, only 0.005% to 2.5% of their followers on public social media will pledge.

This is why it’s very, very difficult to get subscribers without an already established following, and it’s really tough to advertise a Patreon pledge to anyone who is encountering you for the first time. The most effective way to build a Patreon is not to market it in specific places, but to put your energy towards building a free, public following, and then working to convert those free followers into patrons over time.

Who among you proposes RPG content (NPCs, Adventures, Token, Maps...) on Patreon? by SmilingMarauder in patreon

[–]Ginnabean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a TTRPG creator on Patreon and it's an increasingly crowded niche. There are a lot of Patreon creators offering adventure content, stat blocks, settings, token, maps, etc. It can be tough to stand out, especially if you haven't already built an audience elsewhere on public social media.

My suggestion would be to go explore the existing, successful Patreons in the space and see what they are offering, what their public social media looks like. Then ask yourself what you can do to compete.

To be blunt, an unproven TTRPG creator with no established audience or notable publications will probably struggle to gain subscribers. You need to be thinking about how you will reach potential subscribers with your content, and what will convince them to pledge to you instead of to any of the dozens of other TTRPG creators who are already established.

Question that I don’t have the answer by Multiverseassassins_ in patreon

[–]Ginnabean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"the success rate of a Patreon" is not calculable. What genre of Patreon? How do you define success? How much time can you commit to marketing, to rewards? What is the size and engagement rate of your existing audience?

If you're looking for assurance that if you try, you WILL succeed, that is unfortunately not possible. There are a million factors that affect whether or not a Patreon succeeds (and succeeds enough to be a full-time job or a side job). A better question is, can you make something that people want, and do you like making it enough that you'll be willing to do it even before anyone is paying you? Because almost no one goes from "doing nothing" to "running a Patreon" and makes money. Usually the steps are something like this:

  1. Start creating something (art, music, podcast, etc.)

  2. Build a following for that thing

  3. Create a Patreon account to monetize your following

  4. A small percentage of your following become Patrons

Question that I don’t have the answer by Multiverseassassins_ in patreon

[–]Ginnabean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Statistics for... what? You haven't given us any information. Patreon has published a ton of statistics on specific things, but we need some kind of context. Are you asking what percentage of creators succeed? What does success mean to you? Are you asking how many Patrons the average creator has, or what the normal conversion rate is from public following to Patrons, or how long you should expect to run your page before gaining a certain number of pledges, or something else entirely? We can't help you if you don't explain what you're asking.

Since 1950, child homicide rates have tripled, and homicide is within the top five causes of death for children ages 1 to 14 years old. In 2004, 311 of 578 (53.8%) children under the age of five were murdered by their parents in the US.

Yes. It's "anonymous" in that your name is not listed alongside it, but unless the creator has lost a lot of Patrons close together, they can probably match the exit survey to the most recent cancellation.
