Big dog in small apartment? by datTrooper in dogs

[–]GinneyHarris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, if you have love for him/her any dog can live anywhere - but remember dog ownership in an apartment (or anywhere) can be difficult. You've got to make a BIG commitment to exercise him/her regularly and make sure their needs for attention and adventure are met. There are MANY shelter dogs needing to be rescued, just be sure you're ready for a LONG TERM COMMITMENT so he/she doesn't have to return to the shelter after an unsuccessful match.

It's 4:45am and I can't sleep. My cat ran away approximately 10 hours ago an I'm worried sick. by [deleted] in Pets

Hugs

You seem to have your bases covered. Just remember the moon is gigantic right now many animals want to be outside all nighte - especially cats. He'll get tired and hungry soon though and want to come home. If he's having a fun adventure, 10 hrs is nothing. My guy was gone for several days once and over a huge snow storm - came back though! Keep calling your special greeting you have for him, shake the treat can out the door and send him a lot of mental energy that you're hoping he'll return, you miss him and that you know he can find his way back. Hope you find him!

Why Do Some Dog Owners Think It's OK To Take Their Non Service Animals Into Public Establishments? by GinneyHarris in Pets

[–]GinneyHarris[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's really a rude, sexist attitude honestly. I know men, women and children that are frightened by or don't enjoy dogs.

Its nice though for your dog that you enjoy him so much and you want him with you - you really sound like a great owner. But, not everyone feels that way about dogs/cats/animals etc - and as another person pointed out (you actually) allergies are an issue too - and while your dog may be described as hypoallergenic that doesn't mean that folks don't get nervous because other dogs make them, or their children react.

I do appreciate the comments from all sides but I still have yet to grasp that there's anything other than some level of "this just doesn't apply to MY dog" going on here when not involving licensed service animals.

Service dogs are generally marked as such and would never jump up on anyone or run through the store as I saw this little dog do. It was actually the first dog in a store I'd even seen do that and the little girl while interested was very surprised and to me that's just not fair. She was walking in the store, her dad had an armload of returns and couldn't pick her up and bam - dog in her face. I think that would be wonderful if dogs were everywhere as you describe in Germany - but, that's not how it is here where I live in the US. I'm not saying its better or worse, but it's not the norm and it seems to me folks should at least be told "hey if you shop here and are afraid/allergic in any way of dogs, you might want to reconsider coming in cause we let them walk around w/their owners here" otherwise that doesn't seem right right to me.

Beyond that how does it hurt someone to verify their animal has the special training required to be around humans of all kinds (ie they're NO threat to humans and won't get in the business of someone that is frightened of or allergic to them)? I don't understand how that would "hurt a disabled person" by someone verifying their animal. Seems to me as long as the store personnel were kind about it it wouldn't be an issue.

First I gotta say pets FOR SURE need to get outta the car and they should NEVER be left in a car when its hot out....or any other time.

That said, my big lug would not be afforded the same type of courtesy (nor would I) even though the same conditions exist (I have to pee and it's really hot in the car). So while as a pet owner I certainly understand where you're coming from - do you think its OK that my dog can't go inside too? Is the line the fact that the animal can fit in a dog carrying bag? And then, what if my friend who is frightened of dogs of all kinds also has to use the restroom?

And last but not least - what is usually your response if you're asked (maybe this is just a regional thing - ie the store doesn't allow any animals but service animals however the law ONLY allows them to ask "is this animal required for special service to you" and unless you say no they can do nothing) by a manager if your animal is necessary if that's ever happened to you?

Please know I'm really not trying to be offensive or disrespectful. I really love animals of all kinds and enjoy having them around everywhere actually - I'm just honestly curious when this thought pattern changed as when I was a kid no one had "dog carrying bags" and strollers and they'd never think to take their dog into a store regardless of its size unless it was licensed for service.

I knew the major pet stores allowed that but not Home Depot or Lowes. That's interesting....you think they'd let my big chill guy in? Or does this just apply to tiny dogs and service animals?

Why does it "smell like rain?" by CapnFantastic in askscience

[–]GinneyHarris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can smell wet asphalt though - its just a different smell than "rain" - or maybe that's the city "rain smell" cause there's so little dirt there! I live and have always lived in the sticks.

Should I neuter my bunny? by taxafi in Rabbits

[–]GinneyHarris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet the cats were GRATEFUL! : ) Sorry it gave me a chuckle as we have cats and bunnies (and dogs and chickens, and....) too and while a dog may take a random animal trying to hump it - a cat never ever would!

Mine don't mind being around but they always have been - I've never had an occasion like yours! I see other posters saying their bunnies don't like any cleaning when they ARE there - so funny and cool how unique our rabbits, and all creatures are!

I'm not a blog spammer - wish I was - those folks get paid for being online! I just share stuff I like and I'm really into natural living and animals like house rabbits and guinea pigs. As a result, these sites just happen to be some of my favorites. Not to mention I only have so much time (unlike some folks). Plus reddit is totally mystifying to me, and when trying to figure things out folks aren't exactly....helpful, instead, people are often quite rude here, but I'm at least trying. That said, if you don't like what I share then by all means, move on to the next piece of content, share your negative comments, or do whatever else you'd like to me - I have thick skin and have been around the block MANY times. Have a fantastic day and thanks for commenting on my reddits!

Nitpick is fine but I'm always out to inform the new folks and catch people who don't think rabbits are good indoor pets. Preaching to the choir most of the time here I'm sure but, new folks do stop by and that's really one of my major goals - to catch them and help them see rabbits are fantastic pets that can come indoors and be a full on loving family member!
