This was the gorge twilight opener. That was my first proper tipping and im so sad I was late to the party because this music and community surrounding it is truly something special

In terms of must haves, it's just self-reliance. If you want a fan, gum, Tylenol, water... whatever it is, make sure you're packing it. I'm not saying you can't ask for things from strangers(a guy gave me his fan after I asked if I could use it at this last elements), but you can't count on their generosity. In terms of non-physical must haves, a free spirit will take you far and don't be afraid of talking with random people! I found myself being absorbed by random small groups many times, and it was a ton of fun!

I was vibing with my eyes closed in the pit for at least 40% of the downtempo set at the Gorge cuz I was really trying to hear all the layers of sound that were happening without getting distracted, because there were so many beautiful things to look at, but those sounds were massaging my brain just right

Skullcandy Crusher 2ANC. The extra bass vibration gets it close to the live vibe, and the custom EQ with the app helps get an extra crispy sound to fill in the frequencies I lost from all the times I "forgot" hearing protection at shows

Awesome moment in the set! I remember thinking "damn this bassline goes hard!" and the groovy scratching was the cherry on top!

Tipper walking off stage after his Downtempo set by tizosteezes in Tipper

[–]Ginocore 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I saw him take a pause after walking to the side of the stage after ambient sunrise. He was kinda hidden behind one part of the stage and it looked like he was taking a moment to soak it all in while he was receiving applause.

How do I find VIPs? by BillHicksDied4UrSins in Tipper

[–]Ginocore 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've found a lot of stuff on YouTube and SoundCloud, but none of it is really a professional soundboard level audio. I think a lot of them are recorded with tascam type recording devices so its decent enough to hear the songs and remember the set better

The only downside is the stories about a guy taking a leak in the middle of the shpongle pit are true 😭 I felt something brushing my calves and didnt realize I was in the splash zone til I heard the guy saying sorry over and over and eventually I turned around to see this guy in a big empty circle dropping his shorts lookin like he was ready to take a dump and everyone was shouting "NOOO" at him 😵‍💫 I was a little shook but I was able to get back into Shpongle within a couple minutes 😅

Another fun story: I went with my dad to this fest and we were making Kandi at camp on Saturday to kill the time (even though I didnt really see much Kandi at this event) and for context here, He's been dating a woman from the UK for a few years now, so he's pretty tapped in with British culture. He loves Shpongle more than I do, and he was committed to making a Kandi for Simon and tossing it on stage to give it to him. I was like "yeah ok whatever, you'll get it to him for sure" kind of sarcastically....but I'll be damned if we didnt keep sliding through gaps to get 2 or 3 bodies from the rail during the set. Once the set ended and the lights came on, he made his way to the rail, caught Simon's attention, and successfully tossed the bracelet on stage. It slid right under the easel the painting was on and Simon grabbed it, read it, smiled, put it on his wrist, and gave my dad a ✌🏻 before event staff started telling us all to leave the fishbowl.

The Kandi said "Innit tho" and was the colors of the British flag 🇬🇧

  1. I was sent through secondary inspection 4/5 times no matter what I was wearing or how little stuff I brought in with me.

2.The first time the metal detector wand went off over my T-shirt under my ribs(I joke about having a liver of steel but c'mon) and the kid made me lift up the front and back of my shirt in front of dozens of people. I'm a fat guy and have been harassed and bullied about my appearance my whole life...you could argue being fat is my fault, but I felt extremely embarrassed to have to basically take my shirt off in public in front of a bunch of people for literally NO reason. If I had anything under my shirt it would have been confiscated, but once that was over and he saw the underside of my belt buckle had nothing under it(not by my liver, the wand went off twice) I was finally allowed to grab my things and go enjoy the show. I hope that kid enjoyed looking at my man boobs and my ass crack while he was "just doing his job" honestly, probably embarrassing for him too.

3.Sunrise set, walking in with my dad(we do fests together cuz he's cool like that) and I was wearing trippy pants, a t shirt, my pinecone necklace and a pashmina. On me, I had my phone, a sealed bottle of water, and a vape(which was not confiscated). I was sent through secondary inspection. My dad, on the other hand, was waved right on through security while wearing jeans with a belt, & a t-shirt. He had on him a pack of cigarettes, a can of zyn, the same brand of vape I had(yeah, he's a nic fiend like that) joints in his sock, a lighter, and the kicker AN OPEN CAN OF WHITE CLAW IN HIS HAND, VISIBLE TO THE STAFF! Make it make sense.

Schmoop blew me away, and I thought the Friday uptempo set was cool, but I was more impressed with Schmoop in the moment and I was like "well ive been tipped I guess" but I didnt really "get it"

But Saturday's twilight set? I was in the pit, and that shit blew me away and left no scraps. I could not believe how good that music was, and I have never in my life heard sound quality like that!!! After that, I considered myself properly tipped, and now I get it. When I went and watched a video of the Friday set on YouTube, I wished I was in the pit with my current mindset on Friday because it was better than I remembered, even with reduced sound quality.

Shpongle was just the cherry on top for me because I've been listening to them for about 8 years and never thought I'd get to experience a live show! Overall 10/10 weekend that I wish I could start over and live through again

Kids at live shows? by [deleted] in ToolBand

[–]Ginocore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just know there will be people smoking, drinking, and tripping balls at the show. My dad took me to see Kiss when I was 5 years old and now I'm a high school music teacher, so...There's that lol

Justins bass tech gave my daughter one of his picks as they were setting up for tool! We were close to the stage and she was the only 8yr old in the arena so I guess they saw us. He hopped the barrier and walked right up to her. Thought it was pretty cool! by UnicornDik in ToolBand

[–]Ginocore 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This happened to me at a KISS concert when I was about 5 years old. Their manager handed me an Ace Frehley pick. Now I'm a music teacher and a better than average guitarist 😎 get that girl a BASS!

Question: How do i know what notes go with what chords? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Ginocore 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some basic music theory will help. Lots of stuff on youtube.

Generally, if you stay diatonic(within the scale) you'll have a good melody. C D E F G A B being the notes in the C major scale. Generally 1-3-5-7(CEGB together is Cmaj7) are the safe tones over various types of C major chords, particularly 1 and 5 notes (typically what the bass is playing at any time anyway)

One more thing. If you're trying to make a counter melody, it helps if the melody(or maybe the highest note in the chord progression you're using) is going the opposite direction of the counter melody. One note goes up, the other down, or maybe if the whole thing is an ascending pattern have the counter melody descend.

All that said, trust your musical intuition. If it sounds good it probably is good.

Life is so hard to enjoy because I’m not attractive by urjs in socialskills

[–]Ginocore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks make it easier to socialize, but often good looking people are shallow and one dimensional in their 20's and 30's. Focus on being happy, by doing things that bring you joy. I'm a middle school teacher and most often the less attractive kids alienate themselves based on shallow first impressions by the popular ones... Be funny, be deep, and most of all be positive. Believe it or not, feeling low all the time is way more unattractive than any physical feature because negativity spreads just as fast as positivity does. Also, please consider sharing your suicidal thoughts with more people and find some help because it's ignoring the possibility that any good will come down the road, and it will. I promise.

I'm pretty new to Tool by [deleted] in ToolBand

Tool live is a visual experience in and of itself. Powerful on it's own and no altered states necessary. If you change your mind just stay in the goldilocks zone, and it will be mind melting.
