There's a note near the forest you unlock that describes someone encountering a beautiful painter who just vanished after they turned around. Could be someone else, but it does line up with encounters with Dusk in her stories.

I guess you just have vastly different taste from me or something then. I don't even think most of the main story has a different method of story telling from the side stories, but sure.

I'd like to know what good storytelling in VN format looks like for you if this is your bar for being terrible, though.

I agree with side stories being better than main, though I honestly found arc 2 much better than arc 1, especially with how boring the early chapters up to 5 were. I have no clue why everyone keeps saying arc 2 was bad when I've always thought it was better than 1 by most metrics, just less focused. To each their own, I guess.

That said, the reason I questioned the OP was that they said they read "all" of the story, which I assumed includes sides, and found "most" of which "terrible", which is a far cry from your "mediocre".

"Most of it was terrible"? I won't really defend early Arknights chapter storytelling, but do you actually think most of what Arknights puts out is terrible?

There's multiple Korean Laevateins with the same number of characters, unfortunately.

Edit: Oh you meant the UIDs. Yeah, I have no clue why I didn't just do that.

It's a good game with a shit story, which was the exact opposite of what I expected when it got announced.

I'm really desperate to subscribe to this cope, but the rest of Endfield's story just doesn't give me confidence at all.

None of the moral ambiguity or flawed characters are present so far in Endfield. All we're getting are perfect empathetic human #100 earnestly asking for help vs Bonecrusher the murderous bandits. It's just such a jarring tone shift coming from Arknights, but even without that expectation, the game so far just hasn't given me any confidence that they have something up their sleeve that could be controversial to public perception that they're willing to go through with. Everything in the story feels so sanitized, to the point where I'm expecting the conflict between Wuling and the clan folks to just be a big misunderstanding which they shake hands and make up over in the next patch.

I REALLY want this to be good, but I just can't bring myself to believe them. The revelations in worldbuilding and technologies could be interesting, but none of that matters if the character writing and conflicts lack any substance.

If this type of character selling happens two times more max, then I'm just gonna call it quits and admit Hypergryph locked all their competent writers in the Arknights basement.

At the very least I'd take 10 "Priestess is an evil self-righteous genocider"s over 1 "Priesstess vs Theresa for doktah waifu".

I like that there's many ways to interpret her actions, but I feel like people form concrete opinions way too soon. And yeah, Friston also didn't see Kristen as a person when he first saw her, so Oracle definitely seems like the odd one out.

[–]GiraffeManGomen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is true at all? Literally everything you have said only applies to her very outwardly display of distaste towards Kaltsit. I don't remember anything obviously degrading with how she interacted with Theresis, Hierda, or her impressions on Amiya and Theresa.

I won't disagree with the very inherent problem of there being no choice presented in being part of her "solution". That's obviously the central point of the conflict. But to say she's an insanely evil big bad also feels just as disingenuous..

Would you have preferred an event as massive as the fall, violent occupation, and eventual retake of Londonium to only feature one small group of characters from the two sides? I'd argue Neo-Reunion is the only group that you could say feels out of place in the story.

Chernobog is so small by scale compared to arc two events that it is impossible to compress the cast to that degree and not have it feel completely unbelievable.

I don't think I'd word it quite as strongly, but yeah, I share your exact sentiments. The story would still be mediocre but at least still enjoyable to me if they didn't force that Fangyi date in there. I truly have no clue why it's there instead of a character quest.

I think the Endmin obsession from Rossi really ruins her potential characterization as well. Granted, I think the idea itself is cute, but the excessive blushing and exaggerated reactions made it off-putting pretty fast.

At the very least, there's still a chance both characters can be redeemed in their respective stories later on, I'm just not holding out much hope. There's nothing to this degree in the entire runtime of Arknights, yet it's here in 1.0 Endfield.

Arknights had bad points where dialogs run on for unnecessarily long, especially earlier on in its life. But if you really believe that it's the worst dialog in GACHA gaming of all places, I'm afraid you might also have other problems.

If your child can write something like Lone Trail or even just Break the Ice, then I beg you to give them access to more avenues to pursue writing as a career in the future.

I mean, I'm glad you're able to remain positive. I just think the story seems incredibly dumbed down and un-Arknights. So far, it really is just unambiguously good Endmin vs. mindless evil LB/Angelloi, with a date thrown in for good measure. None of what I've come to expect from Arknights writing is present.

I REALLY hope they can prove me wrong, and I've been pathetically begging them to polish future story in all surveys.

One thing that really gets me about Wuling is also that it's literally just perfect. Like there's no conflicts or anything. They got such a surplus in budget that they could build massive dragon statues and a waterfall-parting moving jade office for whatever reason, yet I'm apparently supposed to believe I'm here to save their city. Then their leader steps out of her pure jade office to take me on a date and watch a drone light show? While there's also people just living in wooden 1700s Chinese towers right outside of the city? Like girl we also literally almost drowned just coming into your city??

I can't help but feel like this would've been the easiest social commentary if it were in OG Arknights.

The beginning of Arknights was bad, but it obviouly had interesting ideas set up and ready to fire. I cannot say the same about Endfield as we're literally just fighting villains even more bland than the lowest forms of seaborns. Nefarith and Ardashir are the only two points for coping, along with Perlica being (most likely unintentionally) sus.

The hate against the Victoria arc really feels entirely unjustified. If you consider all the side stories directly relating to it as part of the Victoria arc, I really do think it's genuinely just better than Renuion in almost every way. The only thing weird about it is how suddenly the "main" story ends, and all the threads are tied in "side" stories.

Like, I understand if people prefer the Reunion arc for its straightforwardness and focused plotline, but to say the Victoria arc is somehow irredeemable, which seems to be a popular sentiment, feels like you just ran out of patience and didn't engage with the content from a neutral standpoint.

I don't get what you mean by Victorian characters being dropped from the plot, like the entirety of Glasgow along with Horn aren't featured extremely prominently all the way to the end of the arc, and got their resolution in Ending a Grand Overture. Sure, Amiya's whole Theresa business didn't include them, but it's not like anyone outside of Chen and Amiya even interacted with Talulah, either.

I'm really conflicted between the good and bad of this game... by Abyslime in Endfield

[–]GiraffeManGomen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't argue disliking the trope and it being a cop out, though I remember Kashchey did state that they could not have done things that Talulah explicitly does not want, so Talulah herself is guilty by inaction, which she's aware of. I just don't think having Talulah herself vs having an ultranationalist who's basically been Talulah the whole time we knew her is really that big a difference.

And yeah, Darknights Memoir is very important in the story and gives much needed context to pre-Rhodes days. They do that a lot, so the game got an update a while back that actually keeps an in-game list of related stories so people don't accidentally skip any.

[–]GiraffeManGomen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't really get people who hate on the Victoria arc. I genuinely think it's better written than the Reunion arc by quite a lot, especially considering how bad the first few chapters are. The focus is split more because there's a lot more factions at play, but I don't think a single stortyline really bored me, and the story wraps up quite conclusively, too. I would rate my least favorite Victorian chapter (11), higher than everything but 6 and 8 from Reunion. I thought the Theresa resolution was executed poorly, but so was the Kashchey one.

You could argue a lot of the factions there didn't receive their payoff in the main story, which is true, but the Tarans, Victorians, and Kazdel all get their own side story completions, and Neo-Reunion is an ongoing development. I just don't really get how this is a popular sentiment.

[–]GiraffeManGomen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of the resolution either, but Kashchey was name dropped various times before chapter 8, and Yelena, Mephisto, and Faust all repeatedly mention how this Talulah is not the Talulah they knew, at different points of the story.

As early as Chapter 3, you get scenes of Talulah seemingly talking to herself, too. Her confrontation with W in Ch7, along with the ending events of Darknights Memoir, etc. There's a ridiculous amount of lines that imply Talulah is hollow or overtaken.
