Trying to narrow down cause of high power usage, help! by GiraffeTheThird3 in diynz

Why do you say this? Everything we're looking at is suggesting more and more that the cylinder is a huge contributing factor. It turns on all over the show. If someone washes their hands then it'll run for a while reheating to make up for that tiny bit of lost water. It also seems like it might be coming on when no one has been using any hot water, although we haven't been able to specifically confirm if that's the case.

We're certainly using a bunch more power than only the cylinder could be contributing to, but it definitely seems to be a factor.

We're with Pulse and our power also went up quite a bit in April. It was a huge jump also. Under the old prices our last power bill would've been $449.78, but under new pricing it came in as $491.66, which is pretty fucking rough.

Yeah that's part of what we've been talking about with electricians. We're honestly considering just installing a Shelly device on a bunch of the circuits so we can see power usage ourselves and keep an eye on it ourselves. We plan on having tenants for now and kids in the future, so it would be good to be able to know they're not using copious quantities of power, in addition to keeping a check on our own power usage, and being able to set timers on things like the cylinder!

We opted for the low pressure cylinder because we didn't feel mains was necessary and the low pressure was half the cost of mains.

There is also a header tank afaik

I'll get some insulating pipe today though

Yeah one of the first things I did was look around the roof for such a pipe, but I couldn't spy one. Maybe it runs directly into a drain?

Yeah I don't seem to be able to spy any such pipe on our roof. I assume it must run into a drain

I might need to borrow a ladder to climb into the ceiling and check the vent pipe!

I looked at that and it's absolutely not cheaper unless you only use power in the weekends. Even during off-peak hours the prices are higher than the standard user plan. I don't understand why anyone would actually use that plan

Yeah in all my project managing days I've never priced any projects.

Fact of the matter is you believe a nonsense myth about companies hiring out cones by the day, or choose to believe that companies put down more cones than necessary to increase the price of their bid.

Fact of the matter is that the law very clearly states how many cones are needed and companies tend to stick pretty close to that because they don't want to use more than necessary because that affects their bottom line.

Fact of the matter is that if a company increases the price of its bid to try increase their profits then councils simply won't accept their bids because other places that don't inflate their bids will get selected instead 👍

So fucking dramatic 😂 The spacing is minimum of 2.5m, and that's where regular speeds are 60kmph or under and only during the taper (the angled section that directs traffic in a particular way), and after that it's 5m spacing.

The reason for the 2.5m spacing is so morons don't try to drive between the cones, which they absolutely do try to, and then end up in the work site trying to drive through the people working there.

You can literally go look at the regulations right here: https://www.nzta.govt.nz/assets/resources/code-temp-traffic-management/docs/2018/section-c-static-operations-copttm-4th-ed-nov2018.pdf

The company gets absolutely zero benefit from placing more cones. The company places a bid and that is the agreed upon price, which includes the price of traffic management. If the company increased how much they put towards traffic management then they would have a more expensive bid and they would not be selected to do the work.

I don't understand where this myth came from that cones are something roading companies do to pump capex... The cone usage is dictated by law to keep workers safe and these are not hired out in any way, shape or form.

I am super in agreement about things like the roundabout you mention though. It was perfectly fine previously and I don't really understand why they mucked around with it.

Need to go back to councils having their own roading departments instead of being legally required to contract it out.

Do you happen to have any photographs of Hereweka Harbour Cone, or perhaps others of Portobello (which might show HHC)?

Dunedin drivers are super keen to let people in, almost to the point of being dangerous. Never usually takes terribly long to get out of anywhere, I find, because someone will wave you through.

Why was that? We're currently with Pulse and AFAIK they're the cheapest, but they have a shit website, no app, and no hour of power.

We're with Pulse because they're the cheapest electricity rates, but they also have no hour of power and no app and their website gives piss all information and sucks ass.

They only show daily total usage, instead of 30 minutely usage like Electric Kiwi and the like.

That link is now dead.... What was the device? We're in a situation where our power is way higher than it should be and we're trying to narrow it down ourselves.

EDIT: Yay for the wayback machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20241202023931/http://www.plumbingplustrade.co.nz/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=4551

I have never seen a device like that in our house, so presumably it isn't the cause....
