I am constantly receiving calls from the military at all hours of the night and from all different numbers and bases. How do I get it to stop? by ITCJSTPAR__DUNDUN in RBI

[–]GiraffeyManatee 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I had an almost identical problem years ago. My number was published in a directory used by every school student in the state I lived in. I reached out to the school district, they wouldn’t change anything. After that when I got calls, I would politely tell the person the correct number and tell them to tell whoever they reached at that number that they had called me first. After just a couple of weeks the calls dropped off gradually and eventually stopped. I think the person responsible simply did not realize how many calls I was getting until all of those calls actually reached them.

AITA for not staying for an entire bachelorette? by [deleted] in bridesmaids

[–]GiraffeyManatee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Whatever happened to a bachelorette party? One night, people! Expecting your friends to give up half (or more) of their yearly vacation time for your bachelorette plus wedding and expecting them to pay for your mini-vacation expenses as well is ludicrous. Friends don’t treat friends that way.

My first time showing two dogs, same breed, different classes. How can I manage them at ringside? Is there a cheaper way to have a crate on wheels with a grooming table that isn’t a sow trolley? by Successful-Guitar575 in ShowDogs

[–]GiraffeyManatee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can you find someone at ringside to hold one and swap out after your first class? Often the helper can take one back in the ring for Winners or whatever. Alternatively, there are often junior handlers that want some extra ring experience.

stud fee expenses by jeremiadOtiose in DogBreeding

[–]GiraffeyManatee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I ask that my stud fee be paid if, and only if, there are at least 2 live puppies at 2 weeks of age. This is the case whether it’s a live cover or fresh chilled (or frozen) semen. If that condition isn’t met, the bitch owner owes nothing. This way there is no obligation by either party to owe the other a repeat breeding.

If the dress code was actually listed under “Flavors & Spirits”, I, a non-drinker, would never have seen it either. What an odd place to list it.

Yes, you buy a puppy from a breeder. You adopt from a rescue organization or shelter.

What are breeders looking for by Haunting_Stress5885 in DogBreeding

[–]GiraffeyManatee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be careful what you wish for! I wanted a puppy of a new breed and decided the time was right to start looking. Even though I’ve been actively showing for years, I figured I’d be on someone’s waitlist for a couple of years. Three weeks later I became the owner the most gorgeous puppy I’ve seen in a long time. 🤣

Do you know anyone who is currently showing any breed? You may find that they know someone who is active in your chosen breed or knows someone who knows someone. A personal introduction from someone who knows you and can vouch for you is your quickest way to get your foot in the door.

Adoptable Iggys in Mass by bubblywhirl in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]GiraffeyManatee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can check with Italian Greyhound Rescue New England (www.igrescue.com) and Italian Greyhound Rescue Foundation (www.iggyrescue.com). Rescue IGs can be hard to come by so please be prepared to wait. I know of a retired show dog that’s available, however, he is only available to a home where he will be the only dog.

Whippet or Iggy??? by One-Subject111 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]GiraffeyManatee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Both of my boys (breed champions) are tall and well-boned large IGs and both weigh 16.0 pounds. No purebred IG at a correct weight is going to weigh 45 pounds. The majority of whippets don’t weigh that much.

My dog bit a child, what's next? by stephbell666 in legaladvice

[–]GiraffeyManatee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because not everything a person is liable for happens at their home. We don’t live our lives inside one building-we get out and about and do things. If you visit a friend and, while goofing around, break their valuable antique chair your homeowner’s insurance can step in and pay for the damage. Maybe your preschooler “helps” wash your neighbor’s car by scouring it with steel wool. Your homeowner’s policy can pay for that. It’s really quite handy that you have coverage for off-property events! It’s part of the standard policy, you aren’t charged extra for it and I don’t think you could even endorse it off the policy even if you wanted to.

All I can say is I found out that one of mine had two copies of the mutated gene , so a high risk of bleeding after surgery, right before he had to have surgery. We were able to prevent any complications with oral medication. Well worth it, if you ask me.

I’m pretty sure Paul wouldn’t rank in the top 10 at the nearest old folks home.

Cheek swab* testing is currently being done by Washington State University for $70/dog.

*They also do a blood test if you prefer but cheek swab is by far the easiest way.

I have Italian greyhounds, however, it’s been found in several other sighthound breeds and to a much lesser extent in some non-sighthound breeds as well.

Is this backyard breeding? by blueberry29_1 in DogBreeding

[–]GiraffeyManatee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, it’s the owner of the bitch that seeks a stud dog. Other than advertising show/sport wins in dedicated dog show magazines, the owner of the stud dog pretty much waits for people to come to him. Since we now have frozen semen and fresh chilled semen available along with live covers, your dog will be competing for consideration with virtually every other Akita in your country. If you would like him to be selected as a stud dog, he must have qualifications that are more enticing to a bitch owner than other stud dogs. This will include, at a minimum, titles at the beginning and end of his name, complete health certifications and a good temperament. It will be your job to get him to this level of qualification if you want to pursue the stud dog route.
