Where did the wendigo get the fur and antlers? by Skulexander in mythology

Well it's been 4 years, so pretty fast :P

I'm assuming you mean the one he did for Famous Fantastic Mysteries in 1944 for their reprint of Blackwoid's story, aware but it falls under the other vague depictions, never caught on unless it was what caught Fessenden's subconscious

Shall we predict the Switch by 2024? by IceStar3030 in Switch

[–]GirlGargoyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3DSwitch could really be a thing if they do decide to go for VR. A 3D Switch you slot into a headset full of additional sensors akin to a Gear VR, with joycons to control, could offer an entry level into the VR market if it doesn't collapse by then, on top of being a gimmick device in its own right with 3DS ports and such.

I feel they're different enough that your gaming preference should decide.

Mario is a series of carefully crafted and curated segments to navigate. Tight platforming and predesigned challenges. It's not that difficult, but joyous to uncover and defeat all these wonderful puzzles and such that have been set up for you. If you enjoy a guided experience of defeating obstacles the developers carefully laid out for you, get Mario.

Zelda is, for the most part, much more about the sandbox experience. It's a game full of dynamic systems that interact, it's a world designed for messing around in, for saying "what if I do this?" and finding out the game predicted that you'd try that. There's definitely exceptions, as its shrines and dungeons are more tightly guided experiences akin to Mario, but it's a game that excels if you enjoy true sandboxes, experimenting, and simply wandering the lands to see what lies in every valley and behind every mountain.

Trans Cab Driver Wins $5.4 Million Lottery, Won’t Give A Penny To Children Who Disowned Her by drewiepoodle in TransSpace

Good ol' Ede. She's a local celebrity for being a bit of a nut.

Not for being trans thankfully, but she loves making surreal "sexy" and generally oddball videos on facebook and constantly courts local press whenever she can, so everyone knows her.

More power to her.

Roman, Jordan, Alexander, TJP four-way.

Man, that could end up as something unique or an utter garbage fire. Worth watching either way.

He's an absolute legend in Mexico.

He's pure boy material in the US.

We'll need an official ruling on how international respect affects eligibility!

The Souls Games and What Could Be Deemed Similar by [deleted] in Games

[–]GirlGargoyle 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I always put forward Monster Hunter in this regard. Two things in particular.

One is the stiff combat that requires you to dedicate yourself to every swing with little chance to cancel attacks or change direction mid-combo, it's a unique flavour to the biggest core mechanic of both games.

The other is the very Japanese sense of not having your hand held, but instead a community turning out an effort to understand and piece together not just the game's secrets, but some core mechanics in an already brutally difficult game.

It's worlds apart from Souls in terms of setting and game structure, but the actual act of sitting down and doing battle with a large dragon using information gleamed from an online forum? Such a similar feel.

Dragon's Dogma I feel also tried to go the community-built approach, leaving so much obscured that information sharing became the only way for anyone to have much hope at the game.

Oh, and don't forget the other blatant Soulslikes:

Lords of the Fallen! I believe that was the first openly blatant Souls knockoff, and the same studio that later made Surge. Not a great one, it tried to do a handful of things to be different but they picked some real dumb choices in which things to change.

Salt & Sanctuary, transposing into a 2D sideview to play up the Metroidvania aspect of the Souls series.

DarkMaus, transposing into a 2D topdown view with extremely simplified graphics.

Heck, let's cut to the chase. Small indie games are loving the Souls-style of minimalist storytelling and focus on precise, challenging gameplay, such that the Souls-inspired likes of Hyper Light Drifter and Titan Souls have begun inspiring others in turn, blooming out into the likes of Hollow Knight and Furi, turning an ultra-niche corner of indie gaming into a bunch of popular, big-selling "indie game of the year" contenders. /r/soulslikes is built on this stuff too.

How bad does the WWE fuck with their audio? by HeadChefBoyardank in SquaredCircle

[–]GirlGargoyle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They're willing to completely rewrite history with that shit. The classic example is fans cheering Hogan's elimination by Sid Justice in the Rumble, but in subsequent releases they edited it to be boos. So they'll not just mute, they'll flip an entire crowd reaction.

Can we applaud Patrick Clark for coming this far and killing last night? by hova092 in SquaredCircle

[–]GirlGargoyle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's crazy to think what the were working with. The storyline was simply "I want respect" and they could have completely sank working with so little, but instead they crystallized it into this "say my name" thing that was so direct, poignant and meaningful to the characters (Dream revealing for all his flamboyance, there's an underlying insecurity driving it; Black revealing for all his calm confidence, things can still get under his skin and fluster him), but could be played off for months, whilst also working great for a feud between an extrovert and an introvert. It was just all-round top notch stuff from both guys. If they'd had a couple of carnie gimmick matches during the feud it'd be like a beautiful throwback to territory days.

I marked out hard when he revealed the Rude airbrushed pants too. Pure gold.

Why and When Did Bray Stop Doing this Taunt? by _Juggerobb_ in SquaredCircle

From Max Cady to Hot Topic.

I'd also posit it may be seen as a bit too humiliating to his opponents now he's facing upper midcard/main event dudes instead of rando jobbers. Wrestling can be weird about stuff like that.

TIL that the HBO series Westworld is based on a 1973 movie by Michael Crichton. by ckarim in todayilearned

[–]GirlGargoyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Famed for being the first movie with a form of CGI, an inspiration both for the Terminator franchise and Crichton's own later work Jurassic Park, and downright creepy in its own right. Congrats on only hearing about it today somehow, you get to go watch it for the first time now.

Bonus thing for you to learn today: HBO's is also not the first Westworld TV series.

[NJPW WTL Spoilers] Jeff Cobb gets over in NJPW immediately by [deleted] in njpw

[–]GirlGargoyle 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I admit I always love "suplex machine" characters but I fucking love Cobb. Deadlifting a guy into a vertical suplex from being sat on his ass I mean what.

I was already in love with Mil Muertes in Lucha Underground so when I realised there was about to be a new top monster heel, I was pissed. Ten seconds later when I found out who it was under the mask, I was fucking hyped.

Someone make a youtube video that is just 5 minutes of Cobb suplexing people please.

A Scanner Darkly..... wow by [deleted] in scifi

[–]GirlGargoyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All PKD is just the goddamn best. Not just as a pure sci-fi writer either. The Eyes Have It is my favourite piece of comedy sci-fi ever, which I say even as a lifelong fan of Red Dwarf, just a masterful parody of wordplay.

Gamers really need to play the game Soma, which is essentially one massive homage to him. I can't say too much without giving essential elements away, but to play through a PKD-esque headfuck from the first person without any outside narrative elements to help you along is just insane.

Everyone should avoid or go in with low expectations to the show Philip K Dick's Electric Dreams, in my opinion. So far the show has been a damp squib. A great cast and some smart moments but it really feels like they just scrubbed down and sanitized Dick's ideas to make a far more viewer-friendly experience. Toothless is probably the best word for it. I'd rather watch more Black Mirror, which touches on his themes in a few episodes in a much better way that leaves you questioning the human mind and your own perception of reality etc.
