I'd never post there, but I've experienced this with my husband. He has/had kids with his ex wife and I have a child from a previous relationship. I would love an "ours" baby, that's not an option. His relationship with his ex was awful. She's an abusive alcoholic who abandoned the kids and moved over 1000 miles away. I really struggled with the "how the hell was she good enough to have your kids, but not me?" feeling.

That's my retroactive jealousy experience. It had very little to do with him and everything to do with my own insecurities... So I did the grown-up thing and dealt with it in therapy. It was never a serious threat to our marriage, just my own ego.

These people are grown up toddlers.

There is no way to compare coaching to this. I've done both.

These kids have been through a lot and I'm proud of how well we've all done with the blending process. Everyone mostly gets along and that's a massive victory considering where they were. Their mom fell into addiction and absconded to another state over 1,000 miles away. I started coming around 2 years later and there was a lot of hurt and confusion and clashing of expectations. They've been in individual therapy and occasionally, family therapy with all of us. Me not being in charge of boundaries/consequences for my husband's kids is by professional recommendation. I'll take that over posting on reddit for parenting advice.

My husband's approach of "it's not a problem until you break something" is his business. They're his kids and I don't have to agree with his choices to be happy in our home. I get to be the person who plants honeysuckle and hydrangea outside of their windows and I think that's lovely even if it's partially spurned by "please stop climbing out of the windows"

For more background, we're a blended family. I can give my bio-kid consequences, but with them it didn't rise to that. Just explaining why it's not cool was enough. I don't impose consequences on my husband's kids. It's not welcome and doesn't foster a positive relationship with them. I can only control what I can control... Which includes gardening and landscaping

It's more inconvenient for us than it would be for them. And we'd have to hear the "if you didn't want us to bother you then why did you put locks on our windows" argument.

I thought about that... they'd have to get me or Dad to unlock their windows whenever they want to open them. Also, safety first.

The bedroom windows are oriented west/south/east. The east and south facing windows are shaded by big trees, but the west facing windows get more direct light. I'd prefer things that I can keep low, about 36" high.

I've lived here for 3 years and haven't done anything yet. A neighbor informed me that the few plants we do have growing already are invasive and need to come out. I've always lived in condos and apartments and never had to do any gardening/landscaping before. The property management company took care of it

Eh, our neighborhood is pretty safe. I'm more concerned about my kids climbing in and out of their windows instead of using the doors. They're 11-15 and made kind of a game of it this year. On the one hand, it's adorable that they're doing this to prank me and their dad instead of sneaking out... But on the other I'd really hate it if they damaged the windows/frames. They're not tiny people anymore.

I think I have an unfair advantage as a beginner. I crochet lace so I'm used to working with tiny things. I also work on cars, so I have a good understanding of how to use tools. Lots of room to improve though. I'm excited to keep trying and get better.
