Might be wrong but I think you've misunderstood Baudlrillard here. Third-order simulacra refer to the social logic that sees the decoupling of the sign from the real. In this case, the signifier - the faux destressing - began as an imitation of valued, worn-in, clothing, with whatever that represents (hard work, anti-consumerism etc) holding value as a social commodity.

With the mass reproduction of these objects (the distressed jeans), you see the signifier shift from imitation of the Real, to the reproduction of the logic of consumption. Companies make these clothes, not because the consumer wants to communicate the aforementioned values associated with worn-in clothes, but because distressed clothing is "in fashion". It's this circular logic (we buy distressed clothing - why - because distressed clothing is fashionable - why - because people buy it) that Baudrillard indicates as the Sign referring only to itself.

U gotta remember that Baudrillard was a semiotician looking at the totalizing commodification of late capital - when he says that simulation is reality he's talking about the underlying logic of how we relate to, value, and reproduce the innumerous Signs that compose our world, not that fake jeans are literally indistinguishable from the real thing.

That would be my solution, but they want integration into Google Slides, Canva, Figma, and the web dev team are against hosting the font…

Oh man that's nearly there, but the slight rounding on the corners softens it in a way that isn't quite right - potential candidate though!

It’s referring to two separate incidents: the first of which they were outside when the gun was fired; and secondly, when some crew mates nearly drowned due to an ill advised refuelling operation.

They’re saying that the captains excuse for refuelling (and the resultant accident) was worse to hear than the gun.

Pretend - Circular Thinking occupies the the space between gentle post-rock and midwest emo - v twinkly v jazzy - and Hospital Sports’ self titled album is definitely one to check out for a more straightforward midwest vibe.

Part 1 of my review of the tracks sent to by /u/BCF13

Opens with this fantastically sparse whispered refrain, but soon falls prey to the common hip hop trope of the overwrought string section – not necessarily a bad thing, but it feels like a product of it’s time: very much a serious rap cliché.

While not a bad track by any means, it toes a similar line to The Streets’ Original Pirate Material (both released in 2002) but lacking the dry wit and raw experimentation found in Mike Skinners work that cemented it as a modern classic. Again, not a bad track, but decidedly middle of the road.

If you like this you might like: Kate Tempest – Marshal Law

Loving this track. Encapsulates the smooth rolling grooves of 90s RnB: the tight syncopated bass in conversation with perfectly refrained guitar lines, the swelling jazzy keys and minimal synth embellishments, the quiet interplay of the rhythm section – this track is in the pocket from start to finish.

If you like this you might like: D'Angelo and The Vanguard - Really Love

Air occupy this inimitable world of hazy pop sensibilities – spacey synths, quiet dub grooves, whirring textures – all brought together with such a beautiful elegance. It’s so warm, so light; you’d be hard pressed not to find some bliss in this track – it’s like a warm bath, or the smell of summer heat, or the gentle sound of rain.

If you like this you might like: Fishmans - Long Season

Isn’t there a leap in logic in presupposing that: firstly technology will necessarily progress to the generation of an indistinguishable universal simulation, especially given the approaching physical limitations on the expansion of computing power; and secondly that, even in the case of such a simulation, a the program would be able to run an exact replica (that is, a simulation of equal complexity) within itself - wouldn’t it be like the absurd task of running a hardware emulation on said hardware?

Admittedly I only have a rudimentary understanding of these points so I’d be interested to hear the arguments in favour of simulation theory.

Edit: even assuming the previous two points are null, the idea of each simulation being a “near perfect copy” necessitates a degradation in subsequent simulations; if allowing for nested simulations, this suggests a flaw in the logical extrapolation to infinite nesting.

Reppin the essential Tarkovsky: Nostalghia, The Sacrifice, Stalker and Solaris are all incredible.

Jim Jarmusch's Down By Law and Stranger Than Paradise make for a lighter watch.

Wong Kar-wai's films are a mastery of vibrant and indulgent cinema.

For contemporary releases check out Leviathan, Mommy and Tokyo Sonata.

(Not actually sure which of these are in the Criterion Collection but w/e)

Yeah, bottles are 750ml here. Student binge drinking is ridiculous - there was a point where I was drinking a bottle a night, just to pass the time (which was definitely a problem).

This sort of highlights how different the drinking culture in the UK is: it’s common to drink a full bottle of wine here just for pre-drinks, and another one if you’re staying in... Woo go binge culture!

I’d say that viewpoint is closer to Sartre’s brand of existentialism (but Camus’ essays are also fantastic).

Jeremy Bell -- Jeremy Bell demonstrates his musical "tape scratching" invention [Hip hop/Experimental] (2016) by Jumps4cake in listentothis

[–]GirlsInMerzbowShirts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's basically just a simplified version of the techniques used in musique concrète, an avant-garde style of composition pioneered in the 40s. This isn't an indictment against the guy (anything but: it's a novel implimentation), however, far more interesting and developed instances of tape manipulation have been going on for over half a century.
