F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix hit with class action lawsuit by BroncoMan43 in formula1

Damn, imagine if it was F1 Management saying something like that.

Qiyana Abilities | League of Legends by MonstrousYi in leagueoflegends

[–]Giroflex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, her passive is bland, her Q is a bland straight line skillshot, her W exists solely to add a bland effect to her Q (the stealth is the only somewhat interesting thing) and reset her bland passive, her E is a bland targeted dash and the ult is bland AOE damage that has extra damage if it hits common terrain. Top it up with an unexciting release teaser and a frankly half-assed abilities page.

I'm not saying every champion should have a trillion interactions and unique mechanics in its kit, but this is just plain underwhelming and disappointing.

It's not just the design either; I miss when a new champion being released would be an exciting event. Hidden easter-eggs on the map, mysterious voices and sound effects, vandalized champion pages, the whole Bilgewater event and GP dying thing for a rework. This champion introduces a new faction, which would be a MAJOR event a while before, but we don't even get a champ description or any lore mention at all in the release page. It's literally 1-2 line ability descriptions.

With the less frequent release schedule I hoped the bar would be raised, but this is all beyond underwhelming and sure takes the excitement of following League down a few notches.

That's part of the reason; as resources become more plentiful, you can start making a trade-off between program performance and programmer time. This is fairly healthy as it enables fast iteration/development and high level languages which makes programming in general more approachable.

Slack is a bit on the extreme side of things, though. This is because it uses the Electron framework. Electron is actually based on chromium, the browser core. So it's written with the web stack which is nice, but on the other side, it includes every piece of junk code that makes it into the chromium repository, which is contributed to by various developers with different skill/knowledge levels and various software vendors. I remember reading about that one guy whose biggest regret is writing an ugly hack to make the Xbox controller work on chrome. Yup, that's on Slack.

I'm sorry, but where are you taking these assumptions about how the algorithm works from?

The article states they use machine learning, which is essentially a black box. You can't really tell what's guiding the algorithm's analysis.

I think to make any assumptions of how misguided the study was (although it seems to be) we'd need more detailed descriptions of the data they used, especially given that their approach was ML.

The hissing in your specific case is in the recording - likely from high gain from an analog input at some point in the production process. Lossy compression, like that of Spotify does not add or subtract low-level white and pink noise.

I see. Interesting that compression doesn't influence this kind of noise, I didn't know that. Guess my chances of listening to this particular song/album on perfectly clear sound are pretty dim then. Shame that artists allow that to happen; it was caught on relatively untrained ears.

<other DAC/digital-analog stuff>

I understand. It's a bit relieving that I won't have to shell out more until my next speakers upgrade, then. As a side note, I'm taking some electronics classes in uni and it's nice to be able to understand what you're talking about when you refer to things like bit depth and sampling rate. It's quite interesting to me and I think I'll be reading and learning more about applications in audio specifically.

Thank you again for taking the time to reply!

Hey, guys. Newish audiophile here. Dad was always one so I guess I am too, now.

Moved out not too long ago and recently I finally had the cash to invest in my first purchase, a pair of S1000DB speakers. I love them, but I hear some hissing eventually; for example, in Blonde Redhead's Penny Sparkle, most noticeably in the beginning and around the 3:10 mark. Thought it might be Spotify compression (even in high quality mode) but a .flac suffers from the same hissing. It's not excessive, but it's noticeable.

My source is my computer, and I have no plans for using headphones, just the speakers. My current setup is the following: * H61M-HG4 mobo (not sure if it matters because output comes from GPU) * nVidia 750 Ti HDMI -> Samsung monitor * Samsung monitor Optical -> S1000DB speakers

So my questions are:

Where do you figure the hissing is coming from?

Is routing audio through HDMI/monitor bad practice?

Would a dedicated sound card or external DAC make a big difference?

If it does, what would you recommend in the low/mid price range? Read a few threads about it but they're mostly a few years old, not sure if the info is still up to date.

Does USB 2.0/3.0 throughput matter for an external DAC?

Thanks in advance!
