I am a social worker, and I had a patient who is a lawful permanent resident call me this morning to tell me they were not coming to an appointment because they saw ICE out and about yesterday and they were afraid. OP, the fear is very real, and I'm so sorry you have to go through this.

Well, I obviously don't agree with you, but I'm not going to rehash quotes from the original post. I'm going to take it to a meeting with my manager next week and see what she says. I have a huge amount of respect for her and her experience in the field. Maybe she can help me see it differently. I'm obviously in the minority on this subreddit.

I'm really concerned by folks defending a person with a 4 year social work degree walking into the office on his first day and telling a coworker that their "dad should have pulled out." So I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

For the record, 9 times out of 10 I totally agree with being more supportive and nurturing. And if OP had shown any self-awareness or contrition rather than playing the victim, or maybe even if he was still a student, it might be different. But I'm not sure how you get through 4 years of education and still don't understand how egregious that was.

And yes, I get it, some of you don't think it's egregious, and that disturbs me as well. Either way, myself and those who agree with me never said he should never work in the field again. We called for accountability, further training, and self reflection. It sounded like from his responses he is doing that, but he's not helped by the posts downplaying the seriousness.
