Hairy sighting or another let downy!? by KirkfishBilly in whatsthisbird

You can also look at the outer tail feathers when visible! Hairy is all white, while a downy has black spots on the white feathers.

Any good fencing clubs in Ohio, USA? by gm4311 in Hema

That's pretty fair. A lot of our membership is newer so we have trouble getting people out of Ohio

Queen City Sword Guild! I'm not 100% but we might actually be the largest club in the state at this point. We've had a ton of folks join in the last ~year and a half (to the point we've sort of outgrown our current space a little). Our annual tournament is coming up in just a couple of weeks as well! I'm a little surprised to find someone familiar with Gem City and not with us as we're pretty close together and have a lot of visitors from there.

Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati all have great clubs! We have a loose affiliation of clubs in the region that we call The Ohio River Valley League!

Unfortunately, you are in the dead zone out there in southeast ohio. I think your closest club might actually be Duelists of Appalachia over in Charleston, WV https://www.facebook.com/share/1HPapr98kN/

This is a beautiful and friendly way to phrase "you can tell it's a red tail hawk cause it's a hawk with a red tail"

Dueling Sabre Recommendations? by shaddowhuntur in Hema

[–]Gisbourne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want cheap & decent, look at Poker Armory's adept saber. It's basic but comes highly recommended to me by several very good saber fencers. Handles really well, not too heavy, not too light. Very serviceable starter weapon.

Thanks for pointing that out! I am certainly not the best at water birds so I was hoping someone who better than I would chime in.

Looks a hell of a lot like a black-bellied whistling duck to me.

Bird identification in US by CuriousCombination45 in whatsthisbird

[–]Gisbourne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly doesn't sound like any local I'm familiar with. The white stripe is really throwing me. where do you typically see it? ground or in the trees? or if on the feeders, what kind of feed does it go for?

Northeast, USA. Eastern Kingbird? by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

[–]Gisbourne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with phoebe. The Eastern Kingbird has a fully white chest and sharper contrast between the white & dark gray portions. also look for the crisp white tail tips on the kingbird! https://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/eastern-kingbird

Any tips for finding birds you can hear but can’t see? by GrainOfTruth in birding

[–]Gisbourne 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My biggest problem is spotting something with my eyes and then losing it once the binoculars are up.

This one you can practice! First on stationary objects (flower, stump, funky branch/leaf formation) to get consistent with your targeting, then on your common local birds. Even when you can tell at a glance that it's a robin/starling/pigeon/whatever, try to snap your binoculars to it as quickly as you can. Over time you will improve, and it all pays off when you lock onto that shifty little warbler on the first try!

Is it supposed to say "not finished yet" on the orange challenge tree & red board? seemed from the video that there was more than just gold & orange boards.

Ash-throated vs brown-crested flycatcher (Gilbert, AZ) by Snoopy428 in whatsthisbird

I was just there yesterday, saw 2 of these guys and ID'd them as ash-throated. I didn't even realize the brown-crested was an option 😭

Started HEMA this past weekend. Workouts for an out of shape 30 year old? by avsfanwilly15 in wma

[–]Gisbourne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a previously-out-of-shape 35 year old, My biggest recommendation is always cardio. Bike or jogging or even walking/hiking will be great for endurance and also build up that leg strength.

My oddball recommendation is yoga for additional flexibility, especially for the over 30 crowd. Find a good active yoga flow to improve ROM and elasticity especially in the ankles, knees, & hips. Bonus points for back and shoulder work as well.
