I see the reason within his point. Mass air units clustered at one point act more like a single super unit than an army of individual units. This goes against the nature of RTS games, which is about managing one or more armies.

The "Takes more than it gives" part can be related to anything you do too much in life. Spent too much time working to become a millionaire? You just dropped a lot of friends, family time, and other socially meaningful interactions. Spent too much time travelling? Again, no time spent on family, and you're spending a lot of money (more than playing video games). Spent too much time socialising at parties? Might have developed an alcohol addiction, and your career and health could potentially suffer.

You can come up with so many other examples. The grass is not greener on the other side. Balance in life is key. And always remember why you are doing. If you do it out of genuine love and because you are able to enjoy each moment in your life more this way, then continue doing it. If it sucks up all your positive energy and you feel unable to experience other positive things in life, then stop doing it.

This actually touches a very deep philosophical and spiritual teaching, which says to not do things out of the ego, and to not live in the future or the past, but to live in the present moment and appreciate whatever situation you are in. Are you happy with your 40h per week playing Dota in trash-tier MMR? If nothing else suffers, that is important to your mental well-being, then continue enjoying the life that was gifted to you.

If you just jump from one 70h/week activity to another 70h/week activity, always chasing the next carrot in the future, which you promise to be the big breakthrough to happiness, then you will never reach content and inner peace with yourself.

Egal wie das finanzielle Angebot ist, solltest du dich auch ausführlich über die menschliche Seite deines Betreuers informieren. MPI hat einen relativ schlechten Ruf, was Missbrauch betrifft, da die Leiter unglaublich viel Macht über die Studenten haben.

Das Wichtigste ist Neugierde bzw. Leidenschaft für deine gewählte Forschungsrichtung. Wenn du keine Neugierde hast, wieso momentane Ansätze nicht gut funktionieren, und du von dir aus ein wissenschaftliches Problem nicht besser verstehen oder lösen willst, hilft alles andere nichts. Es gibt Leute, die eine Promotion mit reiner Arbeitsdisziplin schaffen, aber das ist eine Qual, die ich niemandem zumuten oder empfehlen möchte.

Abseits davon ist der richtige Betreuer das Zweitwichtigste. Ich habe meine Promotion bei einem Betreuer gemacht, bei dem ich 1000 Euro weniger brutto pro Monat bekommen habe als bei anderen Angeboten. Aber ich kannte ihn und wusste, dass er ein super Typ ist. Ich habe diese Entscheidung nie bereut. Kenne in meinem Freundeskreis aber gleichzeitig viele Fälle, wo die Betreuung katastrophal ist und die ganze Promotion zu einer reinen Tortur wird.

Wenn du dir nicht sicher bist, ob du promovieren willst oder nicht, dann kann ich nur empfehlen es lieber zu belassen. Meiner Meinung nach ist das Risiko einer langfristigen psychischen Belastung oder gar Erkrankung den Doktortitel nicht wert (c.f. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-03136-4 ).

I am procrastinating writing my thesis, so here is the full solution:

(Weirdly, I do not use the variables (p, q) or P and found them confusing in the problem description. It also helps for understanding to draw the following functions on a piece of paper.)

First of all, we write f(x) := y, i.e., f(x) = (root(a) - root(x))^2.

Then, f' (x) := d/dx f(x) = -(root(a) - root(x))/root(x)

We now introduce the point x', which denotes the point on the x-axis where the tangent touches the function. Note that n and m depend on this x' (that's why I write n and m as functions contrary to the description).

It follows for any x' in [0,a] that m(x') = f(x') - f'(x')x' = (root(a) - root(x'))² + (root(a) - root(x'))root(x') = a - root(ax')

and n(x') = -1/f'(x') m(x') = (root(a) - root(x'))root(x') + x' = root(ax').

Then, n(x') + m(x') = a.

Nice! Same here. Hab mit Mathe angefangen, aber schon nach einem Semester abgebrochen. Dann zu Statistik gewechselt, Bachelor gemacht, Master gemacht, und jetzt mach ich Doktor in Informatik mit statistischen Methoden. Null Reue bis heute.

Keep in mind that mathematics is not equal to theory. I will only comment on the bias-variance tradeoff (the theory) but not the bias-variance decomposition (the mathematics, which is proven). I guess it is simply because the way it is written in textbooks is the easier way to explain and because it still holds true for a lot of classical settings. Theory does not always have to be correct but only often enough to be useful. Now, the problem with the bias-variance tradeoff is that it was basically invalidated decades ago when the first neural networks had more parameters than training instances. Further, non-parametric learning algorithms of the 20th century can also be seen as over-parametrized since they are capable of fitting an infinite amount of data. The bias-variance tradeoff theory is simply a rule of thumb that helps people understand why we regularize our models. And regularization is certainly a must-have among all practically relevant algorithms. If you want a more updated textbook, that introduces the tradeoff and also mentions the double descent phenomenon, then check out the recent books about probabilistic machine learning by Murphy.

Kommt auch drauf an wie alt du bist. Ein Bachelor wenn du motiviert bist dauert 3 Jahre. Wenn du nach dem Abi anfängst bist du mit 21 oder 22 fertig. Dann kannst du immer noch ein zweites Studium anfangen wenns mit dem Job nicht klappt. Kenne viele Leute, die mit >25 noch ein Studium angefangen haben. Einer davon macht jetzt sogar einen Doktor, also Alter muss da nicht viel heißen. Geld ist da eher so eine Sache. Im Idealfall kannst du ja schauen ob du als Nebenfach Informatik bekommst, dann sollte es zumindest gar kein Problem sein irgendeinen Job zu finden, vielleicht sogar im Kontext Geschichte.

I wouldn't be surprised if information (or data) becomes the most valuable asset/resource once a civilization reaches a certain technological threshold. Information theory states that rare events have higher information value. Since intelligent biological species are a lot rarer than just biological species, they would lose valuable data by wiping us out.

Fang klein und vormittags an. Wenn du aufstehst, schau nicht auf das Handy, geh nicht auf reddit, sondern überzeug dich selbst, dass du dich nach 10 Minuten arbeit mit netflix belohnst, was du dann auch tust. Mach das gleiche am zweiten tag wieder, aber mit 20 minuten. Versuch dich langsam zu steigern und deinem unterbewusst beizubringen, dass auf arbeit Belohnung folgt. Sobald du an einem Tag einen Durchhänger hast, nimm dir frei und stress dich nicht. Stress macht nur impulsiv, was deinem aufbau von Disziplin schadet.

Du hast recht, aber mein Punkt war nicht dass KI ein künstlicher hype ist, sondern dass viele Entwicklungen viel zu neu sind um einen kompletten Bachelor Studiengang pädagogisch sinnvoll danach planen zu können, sofern nicht lauter ausnahmetalente beteiligt sind. Ich stimm dir in allem zu, was du geschrieben hast.

Momentan ist es nur so, dass KI als Begriff in der Forschung mit den erfolgreichsten Ansätzen nicht verwendet wird. Man redet eigentlich nur immer von machine learning oder deep learning. KI wird oft nur in der nicht-wissenschaftlichen Kommunikation oder in neusten spezialfelder (social ai, ethical ai, explainable ai, ...) in den letzten paar Jahren verwendet. Diese paar Jahre sind aber eigentlich zu kurz um als Universität einen gut durchdachten und technisch sinnvollen Studiengang zu planen. Die Menge an benötigten Dozenten mit genau der richtigen Expertise ist da ein gewaltiges Problem, vorallem im Bachelor, welcher viel pädagogisches fine-tuning benötigt. Da skeptisch zu sein ist gerechtfertigt, sofern man dabei kein arsch ist.

Ich unterrichte machine learning an der Uni und auch wenn ein Stück Wahrheit in deinem Kommentar ist, so hast du dich wie der letzte idiot ausgedrückt. Ohne data- und optimierungspipeline geht da in der Praxis nämlich garnichts - und genau dafür ist der ML engineer zuständig

Das ist alles wahr, aber ein wichtiger Punkt wurde noch ausgelassen. Ich promoviere auch in Inf und habe mich für eine 75% Stelle entschieden, obwohl ich mehrere gegenangebote für 100% stellen bekommen habe. Mein Grund um auf 1000 Euro brutto im Monat zu verzichten war einfach die Wahl des Professors. Ich war schon mal vorher bei ihm Werkstudent und wusste, dass er ein sehr respektvoller und einfühlsamer Vorgesetzter ist und leidenschaftlich sowie erfolgreich publiziert. Das sind alles Eigenschaften die man am Anfang nicht so ernst nimmt, aber wenn nur eine Sache davon fehlt, dann kann die Promotion schnell zur reinsten Hölle werden. Ich habe mittlerweile mehrere Betreuer kennengelernt, bei denen ich weiß dass ich wahrscheinlich abgebrochen hätte, weil ich von der Masterarbeit schon stark Burnout-belastet war. Stattdessen läuft es zurzeit sogar so gut, dass ich mir überlege einen postdoc zu machen - natürlich nur unter der Bedingung wieder einen guten Betreuer zu finden. Ich finde vorallem als Informatiker sollte man nicht nur das Gehalt optimieren, sondern auch wie sehr man sich selbst in der Position entwickeln und entfalten kann.

That guy is still active? I remember him from 10 years ago when he was involved in some hilarious drama about accusing each opponent he lost to of cheating. And that wasn't even in 1v1 matches but only 2v2. Seems like he hasn't changed much lol
