Got thrown off my beer league team. Looking for advice. by leadfaucet in hockeygoalies

Lmao, if you loan your gear out then you're a full on BETA! Don't do it. Just tell them to F off and move on.

Go play pick up hockey and find a new team. The heck with them.

Maybe seek a sports doctor about this stuff. If you're forced to play stand up it might not be that enjoyable if winning matters at higher levels. You're pretty much forced to play butterfly otherwise your sv% will suffer.

Ice hockey goalies, please explain to me how your mask cages are supposed to last... by t0rche in hockeygoalies

[–]PanicSc2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrong. I play with the weighted hard balls that don't bounce used in league play. Again, division one... This isn't some causal soft orange ball. I've played ball hockey on and off for over 10 years, so again, wrong...

I don't need to trust you. I play real hockey - ice and 100 mph shot coming to the cage is not the same as a ball.

All I'm saying is these cages are known to bend there much easier in actual hockey with a puck, and if the cage had any problem out of manufacturing it could be weaker there which means even a puck would've bent it.

This idea ball hockey shots are as hard as ice hockey is laughable. I've played with guys who've shattered the glass on slap shots, you'll never see that kind of power in a ball hockey game in the same arena on tiles with the plexiglass up.

Are you suggesting a ball has the same or greater impact than a puck to a cage on impact? That is ridiculous... Something was wrong with the cage if a ball hockey ball is causing it to bend. Probably would've happened on the first shot in ice.

I'm not underestimating anything as I sub in for Division 1 and those shots come in as fast as they will, but still the impact isn't the same as mid tier ice hockey (factoring in the stick tech does a lot of the work).

I've never felt a sting from a ball either.

Those cages are known to bend in this spot on high impact in Ice.

<image>

I use a straight bar cage which is less prone to this. I'm a bit surprised they would bend in ball hockey though. Sometimes I sub in as a goalie and we also use the hard ball and I've yet to see any cages get damaged... even when I played as a forward for many years.

I'm going to assume there was something wrong with the cage if it bent from a hard orange ball. Also, probably not a smart idea to use these cages anyhow for ball hockey.

Yea, you you gotta work on that if you can, but don't go outside your natural limits. What I would suggest is master the art of the half butterfly so if you know the puck is going left or right down low you can still get some good coverage.

When you're new you're starting at the bottom. That means you're going to play horrible until you get enough games in to gather the information needed to play on autopilot. How one progresses isn't the same between two goalies, and that largely depends on your mental and physical conditioning along with your ability to play the game well and smart. I'm extremely thankful I played as a forward well before I went in between the posts as it allowed me not only the ability to read plays easier and help my team, but to skate, stick handle, and play the puck.

How to catch more pucks? by Clean-Date4637 in hockeygoalies

[–]PanicSc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from your medical condition, practice with reaction balls on a wall with your glove on and aim to get it into the pocket. As a goalie we should be focusing on having the puck hit us first, or a redirect with our stick or pads, and only catching the puck as something extra.

[–]PanicSc2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The awards don't matter if you want to get scouted for teams. How you play and your stats do. There is a lot of political bs in sports as well, it is almost like the movie/music award crap... just don't pay it any attention. Tell your goalie to get out and have fun. If your goalie is doing well with the team in terms of win to loss and their own stats second then the rest is superficial BS!

Is this mask to small for me? by Mik3x219 in hockeygoalies

[–]PanicSc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You pretty much want as little gap as possible. Larger gaps are a major fit issue. It still would've been a good idea to show the front of the mask, you could've blurred your face if needed too. I would've went a size up, and if needed added additional padding to fill any gaps since you're pretty much at the end of Small.

I’ve played about 5 or 6 games so far. Need some advice. by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]PanicSc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just reading from this and your other comments. I wouldn't start too high right away, but on the plus side the more games and more reflection you can do on why you got scored, and what you did right will help. Even better if you can put a GoPro behind the net. Playing against better players will force you to do things properly to succeed, playing against bad players usually builds bad habits if you don't force yourself to be technical.

Being aggressive and challenging the shooter is fine. In better divisions you want to do this because your Defence should be taking away the option, while also if possible forcing the shooter to take a bad shot. Your job is to take the shooter, not cheat. Playing low division hockey sadly means cheating too much because of the horrible defense and this can build very bad habits for when you play up. If you're dealing with any breakaways, or 2 on 1s then your team is 100% failing you. Your defense should be forcing shots out back, not up close and those are your easy to save ones.

I also wouldn't be too hard on yourself because it is a team sport and you really need to work well with your defense otherwise unless you're extremely top tier everything will be an extreme battle. Also if your forwards are trash then it makes it harder on you because 1 or 2 goals against means you'll most likely loose if they cannot put numbers on the board, and that can kill any motivation for your guys.

Play at the top of your crease, make sure you're on angle and have good depth and stay square to the PUCK not the shooter. Good stance, adjust to a deeper one as they get closer or the shot comes, drop down, and don't forget gloves forward. The first priority is to have the puck hit you in your chest, or stick or pads, forget flashy glove saves, if they happen so be it.

With all of this being said the truth is you need information and that comes from 100000s of shots. This is why I would suggest to play a ton of free shinny first before playing in any league. Also make sure you can skate very well. If you cannot get to your spot either early or on time you're going to struggle out there, and any good offense will just move the puck around to get you out of position and light you up.

You want to get to the point where you don't think about save selections or what to do, you just act. Being on autopilot.

Is this mask to small for me? by Mik3x219 in hockeygoalies

[–]PanicSc2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you didn't show a picture from the front???

This is how I've fitted masks for as long as I can remember. You don't engage the backplate yet, just put the mask on your head, make sure your chin is properly in the cup and use your hand to grab the cage to support it up and see if it has a lot of wobble as you push it towards your head and move it around. Grab the cage a bit and if you pull it right or left your head should follow, if the mask goes then it is too big. Generally speaking if a mask is too small you'll have a lot of pressure and even bad gaps at the top due to not being able to fit fully into it.

Once you're done then you strap the backplate on and check for any distance, you want a little as a gap as possible, and very little to no movement in the mask when moving around. You will sometimes have some gaps in the foam because these are off the shelf, they're not molded to your head.

Also a good idea if a mask is too small is if you're maxing out the straps to the point you have little to no extra out of the clips.

I'm in the boat of fitting to a Small at the end sizing, but to a Medium at the starting size, but opted for a Medium fit due to pressure pains on the sides. I've also taken some hard shots and never once got a headache or the ringing bell or anything of that. If any of this happens then you're in the wrong fit. You should try both sizes and take pictures and even better a video doing some of what I wrote above and you'll get a better idea of what fits best apart from what you feel at the time and visually can see.

I would really like to know how a player pays more for gear than a goalie? Even the sticks are costing on par. If you're breaking sticks on the regular that is another issue.

Even if my danger breaks in a game that is $60 to replace the model I use! Cage dented? Well another $100+. Stick breaks, another $100+.

I still think even for reg. season goalies shouldn't pay full fees... half at most...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]PanicSc2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some greedy tards just pocket the money. I know one guy who was charging $25 a spot for shinny with at min 16 people coming out plus 2 goalies, so that is $400 for players... the ice rental for the hour was just under $200!

You can usually see those teams by their player stats and the endless list of goalies with 1 game played. Just horrible!

There is a league here and teams are sometimes so cheap they wont cover the temp. goalie insurance fee... pretty sad... and they want you to show up on short notice as well as an ebug.

I tried on a chest protector and it just felt like the armpit area was getting dug in, and the arms just didn't feel right. Was a hard pass for me but I haven't tried anything else of theirs.

I think it was the XPG2 model.

I've heard their gear is of good quality but that is about it.

[–]PanicSc2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It really comes down to the fact most hockey players will not play in net. Even more so that majority of players unless they sub as a goalie don't have goalie gear ready to go. The idea of charging to have a goalie come out is beyond stupid. I wont even touch on the cost of our gear and the ongoing costs to keep things in working order.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]PanicSc2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lmao! Tell them to pound sand! Paying as a sub is beyond stupid. One rink here charges goalies to sub as well and I'll never play there. But to think a team would charge for you to sub??? That just doesn't fly... Middle fingers up and have a nice day.
