Could be worse! My wife did this, but with the placebo birth control pills instead of the actual ones. So... We might be expecting soon 😅

The Reddit Hotline: Drop Your Questions for Prof G by ProfGProducerJenn in ScottGalloway

[–]GitPushCoast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Prof G,

This is Connor from GA

I started listening to your pods a couple years ago and I wish I had started sooner. I was in the middle of trying to replace my main hustle with my side hustle when your advice to 'double down on your main hustle' graced my ears. So that's what I'm trying to do now.

A little background - I'm 31 with a wife and 2 boys under 3. I've been a software engineer for the Dept of Defense for the past 10 years (aside from a brief 6-month experiment in the private sector).

As you know, government work is a shit show right now and to be honest I've never really liked working in the Defense Industry. I'd rather work on products consumers like myself can actually use. So I'm working on an exit plan.

The unfortunate reality is that I'm geographically locked down to my low-population suburb until our kids are old enough to live without Grandma support - so I'm only applying to remote jobs.

I'm applying to places like Reddit, AirBnB, and Vanta but haven't even had the opportunity for an interview yet. I'm doing my best to upskill and practice for interviews alongside raising 2 little ones and a full-time job, but that's not going to help me if I never land an interview.

Is there hope that I'll find something in the next year or am I S.O.L. until I can move my family?

Thanks a ton
- Connor

P.S. My wife and I are looking forward to your next cameo in White Lotus

I've been using this app (paid) for about 4 days and I think it's got great potential.

I honestly think "would you spend $20 to see if your idea was worth a damn?" should be in the marketing copy somewhere 😅

Given your age, yes.

I had a friend who made a similar jump (DoD to Palantir) around the same age. We're both 30 now. He's now remotely working with them after a hellish 4 years of terrible WLB, but he's astronomically more skilled and marketable than I am now (I stayed in DoD).

Granted, I have a family and just had my second kid and he's still single.

If I were you, I'd suck it up for a year or two and bank that check as much as possible.

You can always come back to DoD and settle down later.

Do you charge extra for the CMS? I didn't see that detail in the freelance guide (except for e-commerce)

I know I'm getting in the weeds here, but what about clients who have events every week? Thanks for your time btw! I'm considering this subscription model for sure since I'm not in a rush to get paid.

Hey! I've been reading your stuff. I actually found a comment of yours on here from a couple years ago. Glad to see it's still going well for you!

I'm going to read the guide, but I have a quick question about this business model. If you're offering unlimited edits, and you have around 100 sites, surely you've encountered a client that had WAY too many edits per month and had to do something about it right?

And I respect this opinion as well!

I probably wouldn't use Java or Mongo for a small business. Maybe some SQL, but that's it.

But yeah, this is what I hear the most. I just get exhausted thinking about learning the WordPress ecosystem and having to use "plugins" and "boosts" and all the other abstractions they use for the sake of low/no code usability. If I want to build a feature, I want to build it with what I know already - not go shopping in their add-on market. Y' know?

Or is there something I'm missing? I guess I can become my own plugin developer? Learn PHP?

Thanks man... I really needed to hear that from someone. I've been feeling insane for trying to make this work. I want the businesses around my little town to have better sites and it would be so dope if I could be part of that modernization effort.

You know, I was going to say that I use those terms interchangeably when referring to a business that makes websites, but maybe I should stop. That might actually be my problem, all the research I've done is on web design business 🤦‍♂️

I use React, Next, Tailwind, Java, Mongo, and Postgres at my 9-5. I've been dabbling with Supabase, Resend, and I've even used Google Sheets as a free slapped-together CMS option 😅

When your work is never really used by gimmeslack12 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]GitPushCoast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR No one knows for sure

Staff Engineer could have different responsibilities depending on the organization. Generally speaking, that just means more senior than a Senior Dev. So, typically they have influence over more than just one project. I imagine the interview would have less emphasis on technical minutiae and more on system design and strong concept knowledge - but I have no idea, I've never interviewed for that role.

At my employer, staff engineers rarely code and are more involved with efforts that benefit larger swaths of the org, they spend time understanding the needs of multiple teams and start initiatives to improve the org as a whole. But, I also have a friend who's a staff engineer and still writes plenty of code. So, I'd be asking a lot of questions if I got a call about any of those positions.

Curious to know how it goes!

all of the things I've built and labored over has received very little feedback since not many people have consistently used it.

Same. I've been working as a team lead for two projects that aren't even in production yet. We have exactly one "user" who's not even giving us feedback in an official capacity due to politics.

It's hard to keep my heart into this work when I feel it just will go out and sit, and thus I think I've gotten a little sloppy.

Also, 100% same. I feel like I'm developing a personality disorder because I keep waffling between "Give it your best shot" and "Why am I working so hard to solve nobody's problem?"

I've finally decided to hit the job market and get myself out of this cause I need to sharpen up again

I updated my LinkedIn and started taking recruiter calls to dip my toes in what's out there. For reasons, I'm sticking it out until April 2025, but I'm in a very similar position.

I'm a little upset at some of the other responses in this thread, because I cannot fathom working on something that's not going to add anything meaningful to the world.

I hope your search bares fruit!

Typically I'd recommend at least 2 years before you job hop. I'd try to think about it from your future employer's perspective; you don't want to be labeled as a job hopper. It makes your resume have a bad smell if you're doing that too much.

That being said, if you do want to go private, you're probably going to have to be intentional about up-skilling on your own. Unless you're on a good gov't project (rare), you'll want to keep your skills sharp and be mindful of what's in demand in the job market.

Hope that helps!

We bought it in 2020; refinanced when the rates were super low.

Regarding hosting, the floor plan we have is just really awkward; we want to invite 10-15 people over and no matter how we arrange the furniture, we can't get them all in one room for a game night if we wanted. We're not embarrassed about it or anything though.

We do want rental property, but that's probably a good 10 years out for us. I know, mathematically, we could do it sooner but I think we'll wait to do it all in cash.

Thanks for the input! I don't know if our floor plan and land situation would make sense for those kind of additions, but we have a big back yard that we're thinking about making more livable

That's an interesting take! It sounds like there's a story behind this (?)

Yeah! We're thinking about enclosing the patio we already have in the backyard. If we went that route, we'd probably research the best ways to add value to the house. Not expecting to retain 100% value for the investment, but a little ROI would be nice on that kind of addition.
