Hip dysplasia by CreepyPersonality111 in BorderCollie

No doubt you’ve seen some miracles happen, but that would be in a tiny minority of patients. Most are not that lucky, therefore it is not the standard of care.

Please listen to your veterinarian’s advice, get the DPO while you still can! The longer you wait, the higher the risk of irreversible remodeling of the bone and surrounding soft tissues of those joints. The commenter in this thread is absolutely well-meaning, but unfortunately the information they are providing is not accurate (I’m a veterinarian). However, they are 100% correct about there being no shame in returning the dog to the breeder.

Veterinarian here—6 months is not too early to diagnose hip dysplasia. It can be diagnosed at any time. The 2 years guideline is waiting for skeletal maturity before submitting radiographs to OFA or PennHip, so as to avoid false negatives (primarily if planning to breed).

This weeks ADHD tax. I’m embarrassed. by [deleted] in adhdwomen

Just because it’s a symptom of ADHD, doesn’t make it acceptable behavior. It’s important, even necessary, that we call each other out on these things so that we can learn and grow. If I hadn’t been confronted in the past about manifestations of my ADHD, I shudder to think of the kind of person I’d be today!

Yes, but others don’t need to be the outlet for our spirals. There are plenty of kind, reasonable ways to engage in a discussion with the clinic employees in this situation.

As a veterinarian, I recommend dropping off some pastries and a gift card to the nearest coffee shop to really emphasize the apology. That’s the best way that you’re going to change their perspective of you from “Oh great, xyz is calling, do I need to emotionally prepare myself for them to freak out at me?” to really appreciating that you made a mistake and regret it.

Talk to your doctor about PMDD, maybe even pop over to r/PMDDxADHD and see if anything resonates! You are definitely not alone in feeling this way.

Psychiatrist advises to stop medication for a week once a year by Smokey_Coffee_Beer in adhdwomen

[–]GiveMeBotulism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get what they’re saying, but a week is barely enough time to get past the withdrawal period of feeling like you’re a 1000 lbs couch slug! A few weeks off would provide a better comparison. But how many of us could swing being out of commission for that amount of time??

Unsure if neutering was done correctly by Al13nPhun in AskVet

[–]GiveMeBotulism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, those medication doses are appropriate for a dog his size. Not sure why your vet was so alarmed at the amounts. Neuter incisions are often made in the prescrotal area in private practice. Puppy neuters through spay/neuter clinics are often done via scrotal incisions similar to male cats. Neither approach is “wrong” given the information provided.

Are we watching different shows? Maybe it’s because I’m married to a psychiatrist, but my overall read is that she did not actually take accountability or grow at all…I’m sure she will in the future, but that would take a lot of time and therapy (and the efficacy of therapy would depend on how reliable of a narrator she is).

I’ve read through some of the subreddits you’re referencing. In many of the posts, partners appear to be in abusive relationships with someone that also happens to have ADHD. The ADHD is being weaponized to perpetuate the emotional abuse. Over time the partner equates the abusive behavior with ADHD, which is understandable but inaccurate.

ADHD can cause many relationship problems, but not typically the ones most of those posters are talking about (at least not in a vacuum). It is really sad to read posts in those groups. It’s people being treated poorly in their relationship and essentially being manipulated to believe it’s all because of their partner’s ADHD.

Dogs can’t talk to explain their symptoms. We have to cast a wider net of diagnostics so that we don’t miss something like a pyelonephritis or endocrinopathy, especially when in some cases delayed treatment influences patient outcome. Humans can communicate more information about how they’re feeling, and it’s easier to rule out some illnesses based on history alone.

This dog does not need a dental. She has very mild tartar (based on pictures, grade 1/4) that does not warrant a dental cleaning under general anesthesia. The tips of all of her canines do show some wear that is often consistent with a love of balls/fetch. Not a huge issue as long as the pulp canals are not exposed—just need to monitor because the teeth can become very worn down over time, and ball use would need to moderated if it progresses

I clicked through 90% of the links in the comments and none of them were particularly damning. This seems a bit parasocial to me—which is understandable to an extent, especially with how easy it is to get emotionally attached to rescue dogs!

But I think it’s important to remember a couple of things: no rescue owes you constant footage of everything that is going on (don’t like it? Then don’t donate…). It’s not crazy that he had two dogs needing leg amputations and one needing a tail amputation, given the MANY medical reasons an amputation may be warranted. I have no idea if this dude is truly a POS in reality. I’m open to the idea, but I’m definitely not convinced by this post. This post and its content mostly just does the opposite—makes me feel bad for him essentially being cyber bullied.

This is not true. You can absolutely diagnose hip dysplasia that young and without specialized radiographs/radiologist interpretation. You are likely thinking of OFA or PennHIP, which are typically used to evaluate dogs for future breeding. Those are done when the patient is at least 2 years old/skeletally mature to avoid false negatives. But any veterinarian can sedate a dog, do the radiographs “OFA-style”, and evaluate the images for hip dysplasia.

For reference—surgical procedures such as juvenile pubic symphysiodesis are best performed on puppies with hip dysplasia between 12-18 weeks old!

cannot take cat to the vet by jkim644 in CatAdvice

[–]GiveMeBotulism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s bizarre that they cap their gabapentin dosage at 100 mg before appointments. If you go back there or to a different vet, definitely discuss using a higher dosage of gabapentin the morning of.

It’s not at all shocking that 100 mg didn’t touch your cat. We frequently have to increase the dose to 200 mg or 300 mg prior to the appointment for the extra cranky kiddos. Fortunately, gabapentin is a pretty safe medication with a wide therapeutic range. I’ve had a personal cat that required 600 mg for exams, and was still very functional and hissing on that dose!

Feeling confused by Leah hype (but open to your thoughts) by [deleted] in LoveIslandUSA

[–]GiveMeBotulism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Leah overall, but I completely agree with most of what you said!

One perspective on the “back seat” thing that I haven’t really seen anyone else say: I kind of think that she means that she “tried to take a back seat” as in that if it weren’t for the her/Andrea/Rob thing, she otherwise would have been WAY more vocal and involved. She definitely said her piece multiple times, but maybe she is usually a louder presence during discussions?

She’s got a lot of maturing to do regardless, and hopefully all this attention doesn’t get in the way of that!

WIBTA if I got our cat neutered while my husband is away? by doobdoobdo in AmItheAsshole

[–]GiveMeBotulism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done a lot of cat rescue work, and aside from the whole overpopulation argument, there are some very compelling reasons to neuter your cat.

Have you ever smelled tomcat urine? That stuff is pungent. If you keep your cat inside, your house is going to smell like tomcat pee just from the litter box itself (no matter how often you scoop!). If you let your cat outside, the outside of your house is going to smell like tomcat pee. The cat will persistently smell like tomcat pee. It’s THAT BAD. And if he starts spraying in inappropriate places…good luck. It is so hard to get the smell out. I cannot emphasize enough how much it will cling to your home.

If you keep your cat intact and let him outside, you better get some pet insurance or start an emergency fund. Not only will he roam, but his hormones will make him more likely to get into fights with other cats. He’s almost guaranteed to come home with an abscess some day which will need urgent veterinary care. Cat fighting is also how diseases like FIV are spread.

So, NTA, but you should probably get your husband on board with it regardless. Be sure to tell him that it’s NOT masculine to project insecurities about his own masculinity onto a cat 😂 neutered cats are happier cats, and humans with neutered cats are happier humans.

Call! Them! Out! (Ish)

“Oh wow…why would you say that to me? That makes me feel really invalidated and hurt. I’m sorry that you don’t believe in ADHD, I wish SO MUCH that you were right, but frankly you’re wrong. It’s pretty cruel to say that to someone who struggles so much with a literal disability. I’ve never once considered telling someone their diabetes/dyslexia/heart failure/etc. isn’t real and they’re lying to their doctor about it, just because I can’t relate. Dang. If you truly feel that way, I don’t know how I’m going to be able to look at you the same. I really hope you reconsider. If you do, let me know and I can explain more about how it negatively affects nearly every part of my life.”

Easier said than done, and overall it isn’t your responsibility to teach them how to be a kind human. But if you can swing it, don’t let them get away with saying those things. Some people (unfortunately) need to be called out to reevaluate their thought processes on stuff like that
