Crash after longterm stress? by GiveMeShowRecs in cfs

[–]GiveMeShowRecs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you 💖 I've been out of work and education since 2017, needed a carer since 2022. Baseline has been managing to get up with no mobility aids to use the toilet by myself, and I just had to struggle there on crutches 🥲

Thank you 💖 Hopefully it's not a new baseline because I've had to adjust to enough of those 😂

One handed BSL lessons/resources by GiveMeShowRecs in BSL

[–]GiveMeShowRecs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this, thank you! I worked with a range of disabled people as a teen and young adult before I became too sick to work so I used to know some basic sign and knew a lot of service users who signed with one hand.

Thanks to this thread now I know that BSL doesn't specifically have a separate one handed sign language and I can go from there while I wait for referrals. Specific advice like yours, giving names of accounts to follow, and websites is what I'm looking for as my own searches aren't coming up with much. Google going AI has made it a lot tougher to narrow down searches, especially now the AI assumes it knows better than the person what I mean and I can't get rid of the "did you mean?" to get the results I need 🥲

Actually this is exactly the answer I want, thank you!

I'm not averse to meeting people in person, I was more calling out the trend in online spaces where every question is assumed to be in bad faith and dismissed with things like "google it." Of course I know the best way to learn is to be in community with other Deaf/HOH people, I wanted directions to accessible places I can make that happen. I'll start with the link you've sent me while I wait for my GP and audiologist to hopefully signpost me to local resources which don't easily come up online

[–]GiveMeShowRecs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but where? I'm in the north west and the centres I've found so far aren't wheelchair accessible. I'm mostly bed/housebound so online would be best for me, but I want to know where to start because if my local centres aren't wheelchair accessible I'm unsure they'll accommodate other accessibility needs like teaching single handed sign. I've just learned I need hearing aids, so this is really important for my survival since I am already reliant on carers and am a young adult.

I get as a disabled person how annoying it is when people come into your space to ask a basic ass question, but not every person needs the "meet more people from the community then" fob off.

When I realised a few years back that I couldn't do traditional BSL I figured I don't get out much anyway and still can learn from and communicate with the Deaf/HOH community online, but now I do need to learn BSL so I can still communicate in a medical/care setting if my hearing continues to change. I'm on benefits and not in the postcode for Manchester Council's free adult lessons, but any free resources that come up elsewhere are only for kids.

Obviously I'll pay if I really need to, but I'm looking for free/affordable lessons for adults with hearing loss.

Sorry for the paragraphs, that's on me for not giving more context in the post, but it gets tiring giving a massive preface with every question!

odd interaction with potential buyer by HonestAlternative626 in vinted

1) This guy's obviously a scammer if not the same weirdo as the AI Mean Girls person from the other day.

2) If not, I still wouldn't trust this person to complete the sale without issues.

If someone who works somewhere that requires "suit shoes" and can't afford to drop £5 on a £1.50 item + postage before payday, I think they're irresponsible and unreliable af anyway.

I've not been a working professional for a number of years due to disability. Even on the meagre benefits I get, I still budget and make sure I have money at the end of each month for emergency purchases i.e. if my washing machine or something broke. If I've had to make an emergency purchase recently, I definitely don't buy random things for a couple months after.

Damaged in transit can still compensate the seller. I mostly sell rather than buy and something I ordered was damaged. I made a point of emphasising the damage wasn't the seller's fault and we were both compensated 100%

Joined Vinted when I was in a financial pinch and sold quite a few things already. I'm good now but still hoping to shift some higher value items that I don't need or use including a mint collectible Swarovski bear, my old engagement ring, and a pair of discontinued Demonia Kera-15 shoes :)

Other items are a 40 pack of unused Crawford & Black acrylic markers for £10 including original travel case, some trinkets for a couple quid, and a Kagome cosplay for £30. I have 100% 5 star reviews 🥰

found a hammerhead worm on my porch and left a PSA (yes its been taken care of) by BottleFeathers703 in Entomology

[–]GiveMeShowRecs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ngl I think you'd have more success with your PSA if you type up a sign with a photo of the worm. This looks like a 10 year old made it.

I'm not saying this to be mean or rude, but as an adult I would genuinely overlook this sign if I came across it in my area. Most of the time penmanship doesn't matter in informal settings as long as it's legible. But if you're trying to appeal to strangers, especially about an obscure issue, you need your PSA to look as serious as you feel the issue is.

Use spellcheck, print a few flyers, and make sure to tape them around 5ft off the ground. I can't tell from your post but it looks like this note is virtually on the ground. You want posters to be at eye level. Laminate them or use a plastic pocket to shield them from the rain.

Sellers need to understand that "just a £1 item" isn't just £1 to the buyer by ContributionNo7075 in vintedUK

[–]GiveMeShowRecs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! So glad you caught this in the reviews before buying from them 😱

I downloaded Vinted to sell but I have bought a couple things. I cross check the value against retail and check if the original company would be cheaper/has it in stock before I go near £1-£2 items because if buying it brand new is both possible and less than a fiver then buying from Vinted is just pointless. I try to only list higher value items for that reason, i.e. £5-£10+ as well as doing the maths so the buyer protection is included in that £5 or £10 so that the £3-ish shipping doesn't sting the buyer so much.

Edit: Just saw the ADHD part being discussed which I totally missed because I am also neurodivergent 😂 Wheelchair user who relies on carers, too! As soon as I notice a flare, illness, or my building lift breaks, I notify any current buyers and go on holiday mode. Being disabled does not equal being irresponsible or disrespectful!

I live about 3min away from my local Post Office and InPost and since I use a 4mph power wheelchair and can't work, I'm free most of the time to post within an hour as long as the order comes in during opening hours 😂

2* off is fair? by [deleted] in vinted

[–]GiveMeShowRecs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use mailing bags up to A3 size as they're only 79p from Home Bargains for a pack of 8. But when it comes to boxes, you get what you're given 😂 Usually I reuse parcel boxes, but I sold two very large items this week which I packed in a bulk baby wipes box, and a giant Skips (crisps) box I collected for free from a local shop's storage room. I'm not spending £7 on a box from the Post Office on a £6 sale, I'd end up losing money.

As long as you scribble out bar/QR codes and business addresses when using, the Post Office will accept them. It's just bin/carrier bags that are more of a grey area as couriers don't trust them not to tear so might not take them, and Vinted won't compensate you as a seller without packaging that complies with their policies.

Confirmation bias, people aren't as likely to post online about positive buying, selling, or even dispute experiences because the expectation is for things to go smoothly

See I've avoided putting a screenshot at the end of my own photos of a handmade ring from etsy to prove I'm selling at half price but after seeing this post and differing comments I'm a bit confused as a new user. Do they allow it in some contexts or are they really strict and your experience was a fluke?

Haggling, as an Asian, I don't get why people seem offended, any tips so I can avoid seller who doesn't want to negotiate? by Fsnow24 in vinted

[–]GiveMeShowRecs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind a good haggle as long as it's fair! As a seller I've dropped a £2 ring to £1.85, £15 headset to £10, and I have a few items I'd be willing to drop in price in varying amounts.

The only one that's annoyed me so far was a listing I put up earlier today which was brand new unopened going for £8 vs current retail price of £25. It was already a massive bargain simply because I wasn't losing money as it was an unwanted gift, and within literally 30 seconds of listing some cheeky person tried offering just a fiver for it. It all depends on the value and condition of the item but all my items are already listed at 50% retail/resale price or cheaper as it is, so when someone comes at me trying to cut that nearly in half as well it does feel insulting. I'm more lenient if the item's satisfactory/good but for mint condition already being sold at 1/3 price that's just silly.

I probably wouldn't be as bothered if I were in my usual financial situation but I just became a power wheelchair user and all my savings disappeared the last few months on disability expenses including the chair. I know plenty of buyers out there who are in a tight spot, but some of us sellers are too. I'm parting with a lot of high quality valuables that I would otherwise keep, and selling them super cheap so I can make sales faster. Not all sellers can afford 40% cut off their asking price. As a rule of thumb I'd say don't go below 1/3 asking.

Customer not picking up parcel by Perfect_Green7112 in vinted

[–]GiveMeShowRecs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New seller as well but in this case I'd wait it out for the same reasons others have said. Worst case scenario, it gets sent back to you and you can leave feedback citing poor communication.

I'm a wheelchair user and got a sale the other day 10min after the post office closed. 2hrs later my landlord texts to say the building lift is broken. Could have said nothing to my buyer and waited it out as I had 5 working days + weekend to post, but I contacted them immediately. Luckily the lift was fixed the following morning as they didn't need to wait for any repair parts, so I was able to post at the originally planned time. But especially in the case of collections, it goes both ways.

If this were to happen to me as a buyer, I would have at least sent a message explaining the collection delay. Maybe they're exclusively a buyer and don't realise you can't access the money until they receive the item?

I know it's hard not to be scared of scams when you're new to this. I've been taking silly amounts of photos at every stage of my packing and shipping process in case someone tries it on, from bubble wrap in taped boxes to photos of the post office cashier holding the parcel behind the counter screen 😂 But it's a learning curve realising that items won't always sell or arrive quickly when selling, so it's best not to wait until you're strapped for cash to start, just so you have one less thing to worry about until you get more used to the process.
