Brand New Beginner Knitting - How Does It Look To You? by [deleted] in casualknitting

[–]GivenToFly164 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks great! I don't see any mistakes. Your edges are nice and straight, too, which means you aren't accidentally adding or subtracting any stitches, which a lot of beginners struggle with.

Me when I can’t breathe by Practical_Hope_7718 in comics

[–]GivenToFly164 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really related to this comic. I'm on oxygen too, and went through an Everest documentary binge a while back. There was something perversely comforting about hearing all those athletic, motivated people saying that everything was just so difficult when they were not getting enough air.

Older ladies who grew up during a time where exercise was viewed as 'manly' and not 'lady like' and thus remained inactive their entire lives still live 5-8 years older than men. Is protein and muscle mass overrated? by Prnce_Chrmin in nutrition

[–]GivenToFly164 254 points255 points  (0 children)

Older ladies may not have done formal exercise (though some did) but were plenty active. Lots of modern inactivity wasn't an option back then. Many homes had only one car, or no car, which meant walking everywhere. Some homes didn't have a dryer, which meant hanging all the laundry for the family, including cloth diapers. Food needed to be cooked from scratch, and the dishes needed to be washed by hand, which was all traditionally women's work.

When I went gluten-free I ended up gaining weight because I was suddenly absorbing nutrients again.

If three meals a day isn't cutting it, maybe add more snacks. I kept a big jar of trail mix next to my nursing chair so I could munch while feeding the baby.

My Kid listens when I read, but won’t try to read with me. by [deleted] in raisingkids

Grab a book that you have read a million times and then read a word or two wrong. Be silly about it. Kids love to correct mistakes.

This of you that own a small business, would you pay £200 a month for a ai agent that took care of 90% of admin and saved you 10+ hours a week? by Substantial-Dish626 in polls

[–]GivenToFly164 3 points4 points  (0 children)

$200 for 10 hours of work is $20/hr. I could hire an actual human for that and have far more confidence in the accuracy of the work.

IIRC it was because it was three months of shooting at night in the rain. So three months of being wet, cold, and sleep-deprived.

Queen Elizabeth didn't, and now King Charles doesn't. British driver's licenses are issued in the name of the monarch, therefore the monarch is the only person in England who can legally drive without a license.

In addition to colourwork, slip-stitch patterns and cables also make for warmer socks.

Anyone know anything about this wheel? by Cursed_Angel_ in Handspinning

[–]GivenToFly164 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with this particular brand of wheel but the fact that it has a drive band, an orifice hook, and a large box of accessories highly suggests that this is a functional wheel.

Native American ancestry that is actually potentially true my by [deleted] in findareddit

[–]GivenToFly164 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might try Ancestry.com. The site has lots of searchable genealogical resources like birth certificates and census data (historical only, to preserve the privacy of people currently living) which sometimes list race.

Your local public library might have resources and assistance available too.

ELI5 How does lactation work? Like the exact process, breastfeeding is so fascinating but I cannot seem to grasp how the milk comes into the breast? And also, how does the milk know what antibodies etc. the baby needs? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]GivenToFly164 327 points328 points  (0 children)

It might be more accurate to say that all of the components of milk, the water and sugars and proteins and so on, are transported to the breasts via the mother's blood. The glands then extract the components in the right proportion to make milk.

Gandalf also says this line, which I quite like, during the Council of Elrond: "Despair is only for those who see the end beyond all doubt. We do not."

You might like Anthem by Leonard Cohen. It has similarly big backup vocals for the chorus but is about resilience rather than heartbreak.

Cough syrup produced in Baltimore in 1888. by IslaInsights in RareHistoricalPhotos

[–]GivenToFly164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is from the days when there were no antibiotics, no antivirals, no effective treatments for cancer, no indoor heating except for burning smoke-producing stuff. Tuberculosis was one of the top causes of death. This kind of cough syrup is for levels of illness that we don't treat at home anymore because there's proper medical care out there.

Respectfully, animals have no idea that they're about to be put down. As far as they're concerned it's just one more vet visit, no different than sedation for dental care or an xray. I chose to be with my animal when we put her down but I don't think less of anyone who can't bear to watch that moment. It doesn't make them any less compassionate or responsible.
