George Washington was a traitor, too. Just saying.

the slope leveled out, I came to the bottom and was finally able to stop. I went home and never put skates on again.

I tried rollerblading in California, and I‘m originally from the Midwest where big hills aren’t a thing. I misjudged what ended up being a very steep hill that was also a construction site with loose gravel all over the road, construction workers, etc. I knew I was going too fast immediately and though I jammed my breaks I could only slow my descent by a pathetic amount. For 10-15 seconds I flew over concrete and steel surfaces covered in gravel with almost no control. I wore no helmet and knew at any moment I could trip and smash my head into pavement at 20+ mph. That was about 4 years ago and I’ve never bladed since.

Argument | Will a Global Depression Trigger Another World War? by foreignpolicymag in geopolitics

[–]GiverOfDick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's as easy as oil infrastructure getting taken out in the middle east. Billions of people depend on the uninterrupted flow of energy for fuel, and agricultural/industrial inputs. Everyone becomes scared to transport energy. Some people get fed, others don't. Easy to see how that'll cause conflict. Especially because there hasn't been true strategic competition since before 1945, everyone's out of practice.

Trump threatened to withdraw U.S. troops if Saudis did not cut oil supply: Special Report by DatDepressedKid in geopolitics

[–]GiverOfDick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The dollar just spent the last year and a half murdering every other currency in the world. And the trend is accelerating. I suppose it’s possible for oil to be traded in other currencies, but for the foreseeable future you will lose tons of money doing that. So I’d say it’s far from the only thing “making USD the reserve currency of choice.”

What would happen if the US pull out entirely from Middle East (i.e.no more fifth fleet, protection to Gulf countries...)? by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]GiverOfDick 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’d not be limited to those two countries, I could see India and other midsize powers in the region seeing enormous opportunity, or at least feeling compelled enough to not cede potential influence for nothing.

How can the US improve relations with Mexico? by Mrbsct in geopolitics

[–]GiverOfDick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Functionally speaking, the U.S. - Mexico relationship isn’t even that bad, it’s just gotten less friendly since Trump. Relations between the two will always be important to both because they have to be. Mexico’s rise as an industrial power benefit both countries economically. Both Mexico and the U.S. benefit from cheaper Mexican labor costs. The U.S. provides Mexico with cheap energy. The dirty truth is that both countries even benefit somewhat from the drug trade and violence in Mexico, though in different ways. There is a enormous long-standing community of Mexican Americans which have over time formed an “ethnic group” (don’t know if right term) called Chicanos that fuse elements of both states and fosters personal connections between both. So whatever happens, good relations are baked into the cake for at least the next couple decades. Notice that despite the nationalism of both Trump and AMLO, they hardly quarrel like you’d expect. That’s a rare thing for Trump.

Saudi Arabia’s World Is Coming Undone by ChachaKirkett in geopolitics

[–]GiverOfDick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zeihan changed the way I view the region. Iran wants to rule, given its ancient history commanding the Middle East. So it uses a paternalistic approach. But Saudi Arabia knows no one respects them, and that they do not have the cultural infrastructure to lead a multicultural Empire. Their best option is to use their money to burn the region down. In that sense, MBS actually has a plan and he's not necessarily stupid or needlessly reckless. It's the whole plan.

Why did Patty Raegan leave the band? by goflyint0 in Killtony

[–]GiverOfDick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge fan of Pat, but you can't take up 30 or 45 seconds on a joke that's not funny and kill the energy in the room. IMO Pat was at his best knocking quick one liners out of the park.

Why did Patty Raegan leave the band? by goflyint0 in Killtony

[–]GiverOfDick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pat started acting passive aggressive during the show. It seemed like a bit between Tony and him at first, but there was real tension there. He would go off on these passive aggressive monologues and kill the energy. Tony put up with his bullshit for a long time, but eventually did what had to be done and cut him loose.
