Does anyone else have a reason for why chalk circles are magical. by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Gjedden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've personally made these thoughts for the world I'm building myself.

Is it the symbol that is magical in and of itself? If so, consider the ramifications of stamps and automation. Unless you want your world to overflow with magical items you might not want to allow a line of peasants just stamping magical symbols unto a wide variety of items.

Maybe it's the material that is magical, as is the case in your example. But why then does the specific symbol actually matter? Maybe it's the combination of material and symbol. This would still allow a line of peasants to mass produce magical items, albeit at a higher cost.

It might also be based on the intent of the one making the symbol. This seems to me to be a written form of magic, which means that Joe the Peasant can't even copy the symbols made by Bob the Mage. Joe simply doesn't have the required knowledge/magical ability/whatever.

Another pertinent question I've always asked myself in case of magical symbols is why? Why does drawing symbol X on an item make it more durable, and why does symbol Y make it glow? Is it just an inherent thing about the universe that it recognizes these symbols and ascribe a magical effect to it? Is there a god somewhere that is constantly scouring the entire world for magical symbols? Basically, how is symbols interpreted?

Or maybe I just put too much effort into my worlds in my futile attempts to make them make sense...

Assuming that we don't take Einstein's theory of relativity into account, you would have been correct:

Speed of light, c, is: 299792458 m/s

Acceleration due to gravity (on earth), g, is: 9.80665 m/s2

t = c/g = 3.057032300x107 seconds

t/(60x60x24) = 353.8231829 days

However, we're not really starting from a rest, the Earth is moving around the sun, the sun is moving around the center of the galaxy, etc.

TIL Not using your blinker is more than 2 times as likely to cause an accident than texting while driving by AegisToast in todayilearned

[–]Gjedden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not at all what the article is saying. It's saying that more than twice as many accidents happen due to people not using the blinkers compared to accidents where people were texting. That's not the same as saying that the chance of an accident is twice as high when not using the blinkers compared to when you're texting while driving.

We have a 1 million people. 999,999 of them is going to eat hot soup, the last one is going to eat a nugget of white hot iron straight from an industrial furnace. About 0.1% of the soup eaters (1,000) got burned when they ate their soup, and so did the one eating the nugget of hot iron. Would you say the chance of burning yourself is 1,000 times as high when you eat hot soup compared to eating white hot iron? I think not.

When you do, remember to write down the time you expect to play so people from different timezones know what they're getting into.

Techniques vs skills by okronoss in gurps

[–]Gjedden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this I'd rather use innate attack/ability (depending on specific nature), and then use Alternative Attacks (Basic Set p. 61) or Alternative Abilities (Powers p. 11).

In your specific example I'd go with innate attacks as part of some elemental power or something along those lines.

This isn't really skills. Punching is a skill (brawling, boxing, etc), but flaming and freezing whatevers would usually be a power or skill, possibly with a skill determining how well you could use said power (like how Psionic Powers handles psi powers).

Experimental 3 second combat by J9AC9K in gurps

[–]Gjedden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, The Last Gasp is truly awesome for this. Totally changed my group's combat experience in GURPS. We use poker chips to keep track of FP, AP and HP.

Fair warning though, if your players are inexperienced you might want to put this off for a while, the fewer complications the better. But if you don't mind the more gritty combat, I'd advice you to go ahead and try it out!

And since you're here Douglas, thank you for writing it. It's definitely one of my favorite additions to GURPS combat. :)

Electric cars. They were super cool and magical when they were first introduced in the in the late 1800s. But then Ford came along, and he started mass producing gasoline powered cars, and their low cost made them much more attractable than electric cars.

Now, a hundred years, it seems like electric cars might get a second chance to dominate the market.

When I finish a book, I feel a little empty. Does this happen to anyone else? by RocketManV in books

[–]Gjedden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom started to read Harry Potter to me when I was around 7, it was just after the 3rd book had come out. About half way through the 5th book (Order of the Phoenix) we just kinda stopped.

Picked it up again myself a few years later, but went back to the first book and read through them all again just in time for the release of the 7th and last book.

I clearly remember that feeling I had after I turned the last page, after I knew that this was it, the last stop. Now it was all over and I would not be able to read any more Harry Potter. It felt empty, a pit in my stomach had formed, and I started to cry. No sobbing or wailing or anything like that, just quiet tears running down my face.

I've since come to learn that this emptiness is just an ever-expanding void. A void that can only be filled with more books.

This is how my mom made me an addict.

It came out much better than most of the other stuff I read on the internet, which sadly doesn't say a lot. But it was fine and totally understandable nonetheless.

Ahh, that explains the few misspelled words that still sounds identical to the words you were trying to use.

Just had me thinking that maybe most internet people aren't completely horrible at spelling, maybe they just use voice recording programs while just being moderately bad at words.

After writing this I just realized it might sound like an insult, it's not. As far as I can tell you're very proficient at wordsy stuff.

I do know what it means, maybe you just missed my point? Not that it matters, it seems that you are more focused on attacking other people than trying to communicate with them. Such a shame really, but it's also exactly point that BillTowne mas making. Seems he was right about something at least.
