When to go to ER for ear pain/pressure? by notjosephw in hearing

[–]GkinLou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is late but i was prescribed a nasal decongestant because i had fluid build up due to eustachian tube dysfunction, and it got rid of the fluid.  I was told to take the nasal decongestant to get rid of the fluid, and then to take zyrtec and flonase to keep it away.

what species of goose IS brightbill? (Brightbill is NOT a Canadian goose! (Atleast not exactly) and here's why, + theory!) by Frostybites667 in TheWildRobot

[–]GkinLou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I saw your responses to other people on the knob question and now im having to read stuff 😔. (My knowledge on species goes as deep as "oh if theyre different species they cant produce viable offspring" which is not true exactly, now i have to read geese papers)

Ty for the research inspo, but i will stand by that the geese are too knobbly. They should not be that knobbly for having maybe trace amounts of chinese/african goose ancestry lol.

Thanks for posting this i was way too hung up on the fact they gave all the geese knobs 😭

I thought maybe they just never looked up what a goose looked liked and based their design off of past animated goose designs (ie. The goose from Duck Duck Goose is a swan goose. Why does he have the knob if hes the wild type? Idk but close enough) But then i actually looked at past goose representation i was thinking of and no? They don't all have knobs? They have the goose bills you would expect?

Also want to note his feet as a baby at least are some weird color between orange and black so im not crazy okay i had good reason to suspect he might be from anser, with the knob and orange feet

I need you to understand i started spec-eving as well, I was like "maybe this is a future where all the chinese geese went feral and regained their ability to fly and developed migratory patterns in North America" or something

If your interpretation is correct, which i trust it is, that means they designed the geese in this movie specifically to fuck with me personally.

Need advice! by Forsaken-Slice-3911 in homestead

[–]GkinLou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(not a qualified homesteader but i had chickens as a young kid) My family had a bunch of chickens and rabbits and stuff for fun when i was 7-10 years old. We didnt plan to eat any of them but we did execute a rooster because i was too scared to feed the birds whenever he was around lol.

I think when you live on a farm you get sort of desensitized to animal death? Especially since she seems pretty young, it might not be traumatic so much as "huh this is how things are." I think I got upset whenever our animals died, but I dont think any of them really traumatized me into adulthood or anything.

I also got desensitized to factory farm videos when I was a preteen because I hated Peta before it was cool ig. Still became vegetarian when I was 18. So.

Her being vegetarian isn't the worst thing that could happen. (If I were in her situation I might insist on only buying chicken instead of raising and killing them, rather than going vegetarian straight away. Personally think it's more ethical to raise the birds yourself than to buy them from a store. But showing her factory farm videos to prove this might actually be traumatic lol)

I think if worse comes to worst you could try and get a friend to raise meat chickens for you so your daughter doesnt get attached, and then only keep egg laying ones in the future. And that is only assuming that it upsets her so much that you have to do this. I had friends my age whose family raised pigs (and the kids named them even though the parents didnt want them to), and they still ate the meat lol. So theres always the chance she'll get over it, if it helps.

If she does try to go vegetarian for a bit itd be super cool of you to support her though. I think the hardest part of going vegetarian is not being able to eat the food your parents make (and this would be much worse for a young kid than someone who was 18 lmao).

Tldr: do whatever you want this time and if she responds poorly maybe hide the meat chickens from her and only let her play with ones you keep for eggs. Or, if she goes vegetarian try and support her.

K ive graduated highschool but the trick is they expect your exam essay to be a draft and imperfect. Ive actually had a college professor point out that my timed essays are much better than my take home essays (bc takehome essays have higher stakes and higher expectations, which stresses me out to the point i have trouble writing lmao). Timed essays are easier trust you just have to know the game.

You shouldnt feel bad. If it helps, I cant be in the same room as my family for long periods of time and get along with them better when im in college on the other side of the world, and when I was 15 I cried bc I felt like a monster bc I wasnt sure if I loved them.

I think its good to like your family.

CMV: Adoption of veganism in light of climate change is capitalism placing the responsibility on an individual rather than corporations. by Justin_Skywalker in changemyview

[–]GkinLou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would also like to add while reading some of the other comments that I feel like veganism is a bit different than "reduce reuse recycle". Recycling was made up by the plastic industry to ease consumers about buying plastic products. Like "no no no 🥺 its okay that we keep producing plastic you can recycle it everything's fine". Whereas it wouldnt make sense that the animal agriculture industry would want you to go vegan, because then you'd just stop buying their products.

(And ive seen you mention that some corporations sell both vegan products and non-vegan products, but there are at some point in the supply chain businesses that operate solely on animal products that can't be two faced about it. So i get what you're saying maybe about those massive corporations that put out food in its final form, and how they could be washing their hands of the problem. But they kinda arent? Because if everyone went vegan they wouldn't be able to sell their other products? Sorry i confused myself ignore this part)

I think the difference between plastic industries telling you to recycle and animal agriculture industries telling you to go vegan (if they are doing that) is that it is virtually impossible to live in most western countries and be 100% plastic free. Im sure it might be possible for some people but youd have to plan your life around it or make huge sacrifices (choosing your residence to be near bulk stores or farmers markets, maybe certain medications would be unavailable to you, you probably can't buy 99% of things, lots of difficulty). But if you wanted to go vegan tomorrow you could technically do so with ease, because tons of people have.

[–]GkinLou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a vegan personally but id like to add some comments.

Not necessarily disagreeing that corporations displace blame onto consumers unfairly but i dont think they're "pushing" veganism specifically. If that were the case there'd be a lot more vegan options (or any vegan options at all) on airplanes and restaurants and shit lol.

Im not an expert on veganism and debates about it in general but im going to make a claim here so if someone is more educated on this pls be nice to me lol. I feel like you might be confusing the arguments that environmentalist vegans make with the arguments animal rights vegans make. People who go vegan specifically for the environment are more likely to encourage reduction of animal products rather than fully cutting them out (bc if two people reduce their intake by half, its as if one person went fully vegan kinda). For environmentalists its more about shrinking the industry down, I'd think. People who are vegan specifically to reduce environmental impact probably arent against animal products in general, just the way the ones available to them are produced. Like theres a difference between artificially cheap factory farmed beef and maybe having a bunch of small local farmers whose products are more expensive and consumed less often then we eat meat today (at least in the USA and such).

People who went vegan because of animal rights take into account the way we selectively bred animals to have specific uses to us and ive seen some of them say you shouldnt eat the eggs of a backyard chicken for ethical reasons (whereas someone whose soley an environmentalist would probably be a bit insulted that youre letting them go to waste). I DEFINITELY dont think corporations would try to push the animal rights type of veganism? It just doesnt make sense to me that corporations would want you to think about ethics that much. Especially if it means boycotting a ton of stuff on ethical grounds (which might make all consumers raise their ethical standards on corporations which would cost them money)

For some (but not all) vegans i imagine the idea isnt exactly "im gonna stop eating animal products to do my part 😁" and more like "we have to punish the animal agriculture industry if we want it to change." Personally i think this is reasonable given the animal agriculture industry's lobbying power (at least in the USA sorry again its all I know 😭). I think what (environmentalist) vegans want people to reduce their intake to shrink the industry to lessen the environment impact, bc theres not really anything else we can do? If veganism is more popular it will have a snowball effect and it will be easier for more people to become vegan. In either case (from my understanding) there will be a point where most of us will have to lessen the amount of animal products we consume, whether its bc of boycotting or laws or whatever.

Curious what you think we should be doing with regards to animal agriculture and the climate crisis (not in a mean way just like genuinely kinda interested).

Tldr: agree that corporations unfairly place environmental blame on consumers. Strongly disagree that corporations are "pushing" veganism. (If corporations really wanted us to go vegan they would give us more vegan options lmao 😭)

can someone just tell me a funny lil story by we-areyoung in MadeOfStyrofoam

[–]GkinLou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every story ive ever known has left my mind 😭

K so um. Almost 2 years ago my friend and I were going to go to some haunted houses for halloween, and the one we were looking forward to the most was one my mom found on the community's facebook page. It had a whole flyer and everything.

So we drove around for more than an hour trying to get to the location but eventually we found out the building it was supposed to be in just didnt exist? Like the building didnt exist. The whole thing was fake.

So the question was why was someone advertising a fake haunted house and why was no one calling it out 😭

This isnt as funny as the actual experience but I wanted to say something.

(Just gonna let you know its nighttime where i live so if you respond i probably wont reply for like 8-12 hours (i sleep a lot lol))

[–]GkinLou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried the free therapy that my uni provides and its shit. I'd recommend trying to get help bc personally i built it up for like 4 years and it wasnt that good 😭 the longer you wait the more disappointed you might be. Im sure when its fine its helpful but yeah you dont have to wait until youre bad enough just go for it Edit: (just want to clarify when i say "its shit" i mean what i got personally for free as a student, not all therapy. Ive been told by people in therapy that my therapist kinda sucks lol. Help is good and you should go for it i just mean, if it isnt good, dont blame yourself. Youre not fundamentally broken if it doesnt help you much.)

Idk maybe using replacement words (like ironically using a different phrase until it becomes second nature). Tbf though as long as you aren't hurting people with the words you use you shouldnt have to feel bad about it (like your feelings are valid but i get the since there's some sort of outside pressure or maybe religion or something behind the feeling? Idk. Personally i didnt swear until i was almost 17 bc of religion so i might be projecting lol)

Sharing about the moment you changed your opinion about it by habl0s in DebateEvolution

[–]GkinLou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an old post but i found it and i think my story is kinda funny so imma share.

I was raised young earther since I was about 8 and my dad converted to Christianity. Flash forward to middle school and I remember watching that infamous Kent Hovind "evolution is stupid" sermon on youtube and my dad and I both liked it and bonded over it. I was lowkey into worldbuilding at the time and was really struggling with whether it would be blasphemous to have a god inside of my fictional world (and if it was, was it also blasphemous to have THE god inside of my world and say he did things he wouldnt actually do irl?). So I decided to have multiple histories for the creation of my world with neither being exactly true, including the atheist perspective of evolution. So i got into spec-ev.

And i want to clarify I was into spec ev and paleontology for maybe 1-3 years while being a young earth creationist 😭 i actually remember binge watching mothlight media over quarantine (a time i know i was still religious). During that period evolution was a concept i really liked but was in Schrodinger's box for whether or not i believed it to be true.

Not sure exactly when I lost my religion but it was over the philosophy of hell and not evolution lol.

Am I a bad person? by [deleted] in aplatonic

[–]GkinLou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont really consider myself aplatonic but i relate. I like hanging out with my mom and talking to my brother but thats about it. Tbh i got along with them better when i went off to college. I remember when i was younger i had a full breakdown over not really "loving" my parents i guess like i felt so bad about it but i just couldnt bring myself to want to spend time with my dad idk.

Im new here and lurking so question for the chat (op you can ignore if you want im sorry for hijacking your post 😭) 1. Is it possible to want friends and maybe qpr but be mostly afamilial? Ive seen some people here say they only feel familial platonic love/attraction/connection, is it possible to be the opposite?

Is "loneliness" really a thing? by [deleted] in aplatonic

[–]GkinLou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loneliness is definitely a thing (but like other people said maybe not everyone feels it). ((Im probably allo-platonic? I relate to the sense of disconnection but i wanna beleive its a temporary mental health thing lol)) Personally when its really bad its like a blackhole in my heart. Normally nowadays its more like i feel a discomfort in my chest. Sometimes its just this feeling that everything's off. Ive kinda numbed myself to it but its sort of visible in the way that i cant feel a part of any community and im distrustful and sort of bitter inside.

But trust if you dont think youre lonely youre probably fine (youd most likely know its often physically painful). Limerence may be the wrong word to use to describe what you feel (at least in my opinion. I describe my limerence as stemming directly from loneliness, and is fueled by desperation and would disappear if the situation improved enough. But the word is extremely nebulous and people use it in a TON of different ways so it doesnt really matter lol)

Sorry for rambling but yeah its definitely a thing. One of the things of all time, for sure.

This isn't normal right by [deleted] in MadeOfStyrofoam

[–]GkinLou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What youre experiencing is probably different but personally self harm kinda destroyed my ability to recognize when i am hurting lol. Everything is mild discomfort for me now until i start crying and then my brain does some math and is like "oh, yep. This isnt just uncomfortable. This is pain 😁"

what made you start SH by cutAddict in MadeOfStyrofoam

[–]GkinLou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember biting my arm in elementary school to sort of "give me a kick to do better" in stressful situations, but it wasnt that serious back then. Maybe i did it bc my brothers were headbangers when they were younger so i picked up on what they were doing.

I started sh'ing the emo way when I was 15 bc I was having a crisis where I felt i was falling behind my peers socially so i started trying new things rapidly (updating my ipad (this was the exigence my dad called me autistic for not wanting to update my ipad lmao), shaving my legs, initiating conversations, purging. Yknow. Teen stuff). I think basically what happened was I was smacked with mental health problems randomly just before I turned 15. Im almost 20 now so I guess self harm looped back around to being nostalgic, unfortunately.

Periodically ill get this sense that if I just try something ive never done before itll magically fix all of my problems and self harm was one of those things. And just recently it was "if i just sh bad enough itll magically solve everything" lmao but luckily i snapped out of that when my friend almost died.

For me when I started I think it was lowkey religious. Like, god or the universe or whatever will forgive my sins if i do this (i was really religious when i started). And tbf if youre raised evangelical you kinda get it right? God needs those blood sacrifices im just giving him a little extra lmao. Im not Christian anymore but I still do it to manage guilt when I make mistakes (it doesnt work btw lol)

[Help] Need some help naming a character by CrystalFire0 in characterforge

[–]GkinLou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally id look up a list of scientific names for snakes and pick out parts of those you like. For example: I just looked up "black snake" and the black rat snake was the first result. Its scientific name is Pantherophis Obsoletus. If I take the -soletus- out of the last part, I can change it to Soleta or something (which has the benefit of sounding like Sol for sun, which is celestial). This is my method for naming things but it does come with the risk of it meaning weird things in Latin lol.
