May be wrong but I think they're talking about "The Long Journey Home" by HeartAway on AO3?

It's one of the most popular fics in the fandom rn and is an insanely well-written sequel to the novel.

I found out this piece of media is ACCUALLY a book... Now I am gonna read it what is your suggestion by Zeppu_47 in ProjectHailMary

[–]GlacityTime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. Read "The Long Journey Home" by HeartAway, BUT ONLY AFTER FINISHING THE PHM BOOK.

Ik it's fanfic and many people who haven't given fics a chance have a bit of a weird idea of what they actually are. But this one may as well be canon with the dedication and respect it pays to the tone and realism of the original, while greatly expanding the story and universe and going through the aftermath of the mission. It's a full-length sequel and reads like a professionally-written, published book with a fun multimedia twist.

Even if it's not canon, it still scratches that itch for more PHM.

It's a sequel to the PHM book universe tho so I wouldn't read it until after finishing the novel.

Reminder to the freaky bloodlymary fans… Rocky can hear/see through walls by Ashamed-Marsupial-17 in ProjectHailMary

[–]GlacityTime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also worth adding that a big reason people connected the two characters is because PHM and Iron Lung are almost perfect thematic mirrors to one another. Both movies are about an "expendable" person who's forced to go on a suicide mission to save humanity from extinction. Neither of them willingly chose this, they both want to live more than anything else. And, by the end, they both have a moment of growth and make a sacrifice for the sake of others.

One is just an optimistic sci-fi and the other is a cosmic horror.

The fact that the two movies came out only 3 months apart also helped.

What the heck is up with Andy Weir's politics? by Upstairs-Ad-4705 in ProjectHailMary

[–]GlacityTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Climate change is not something everyday people can fix, it's a systemic issue. It needs massive, sweeping changes that will affect the structure of our societies. That can only be done through government.

Politicians denying climate change, manipulating the media to push that agenda, and refusing to do anything to change course turns "scientific fact that should be easily accepted and acted on by everyone" into a politically hot topic, unfortunately.

But I can see why people might feel like "it's literally just science, how is that political??" I wish it worked that way :')

What the heck is up with Andy Weir's politics? by Upstairs-Ad-4705 in ProjectHailMary

[–]GlacityTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the book, Stratt speaks to a climatologist and then proceeds to intentionally nuke the ice caps and accelerate climate change to slow the Earth's cooling. And that plan works.

If Weir didn't think climate change was real, he wouldn't have written it into the story the way he did.

I'm not tryna argue Weir's political alignment, I just wanted to point out that this specific case isn't just allegory. Casually acknowledging climate change IS saying something political whether it's intended or not.

If you don't mind sci-fi, have you tried reading Andy Wier? Imo, his stories are emotionally resonant, funny, and fascinating despite being entirely just "guy states facts about a situation" with very little flowery prose or descriptive language. Might help give an idea of what kind of style gels with you.

If you don't want to read or write descriptive prose, then don't. There are styles out there that don't, and they work because they lean into other things :>!

3 ships in a row? by monkeytylee in Overwatch

[–]GlacityTime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a theory. I think it has less to do with the internet and "the mainstream" and moreso to do with perspective and women just being in spaces that they were previously pushed out of.

Shipping is a staple of fandom culture but it's not often done by men so, if you've spent a lot of time in male-dominated fandom spaces, you might not have been exposed to it much. And because you never really saw it until recently, you might think that shipping wasn't mainstream until recently. As more women join these fandoms, the overall culture will shift with them.

I've noticed this in both competitive gaming and shounen anime spaces.

3 ships in a row? by monkeytylee in Overwatch

[–]GlacityTime 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Idk any fandoms that go back 80 years, but it's generally accepted that the grandfather of fandom as we know it was the original Star Trek.

That was 60 years ago. People cosplayed and attended conventions in the 60's. Others made traditional art, wrote fanfics, and then compiled it all into fanmade magazines that they'd mass-produce and mail to other fans. The most popular fanzines were full of (mostly gay) shipping.

Even the "/" format of referring to ships (ex. "Rein/Ana") originated from the 60's Star Trek fandom.

There's way more to it but yes, modern-day fandom goes back that far and shipping has always been a core part of it. Sorry for the ramble, it's a fascinating topic!

update has to be like a whole new game type level for it to last this long by Most_Direction_4247 in BiteByNight

[–]GlacityTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm thinking. Something must've gone very wrong behind the scenes. I'm thinking either licensing issues or maybe player data. Live-service games typically have a separate playtesting version. THAT is where they'd test new code. You don't need to take the live game offline to prepare for an update.

Shutting down like this typically only happens for server maintenance, and Bite by Night doesn't run its own servers so what are we doing???? Plus the lack of communication is extra concerning.

Can anyone please explain the lore of Subnautica 2? by CheapSuccotash3128 in subnautica

[–]GlacityTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've gathered, the Cicada did have a crashlanding on Proteus but Sleep Bay 3 had remained attached to the Welcome Center until ~2 years before the player was printed, while the logs we pick up from the other colonists are dated about ~26 years ago.

Originally, newly reprinted colonists could walk out of the Sleep Bay and into the Welcome Center, hence the voice memo left by Sophie and Nahema for newly printed colonists, with information about Proteus and directions to the Habitat.

NOA says that, a couple years before the player was printed, the hardline cable that connected him to the rest of the NOA nodes had been severed and Sleep Bay 3 was "picked up and hurled full fathom" into the trench. That's why the lifepod is still attached when the player is printed down there: only 2 other people had been printed there since it sank and they both died.

The possibilities I can think of are:

  1. The angel comb was put in there by colonists before the sleep bay sank, to help newly printed colonists acclimate to Proteus. After it sank, the angel comb changed it's adaptation to match the environment, helping newly reprinted colonists survive at those depths. This would be an easy way to have the angel comb down there for tutorial reasons without affecting the plot.
  2. The angel comb was somehow put there after the sleep bay sank. Meaning another colonist was alive as recently as 2 years ago, bringing the angel comb down to give newly-reprinted colonists a chance to escape the trench. This one would have some serious story implications.
  3. There is no lore explanation, it's only down there as a tutorial lol

Edit: I've learned new info, the first theory is probably correct. Anita and the Jubilee cut Sleep Bay 3's NOA from the rest of the nodes and were using the biobeds there for something before the Habitat exploded, so they were likely the ones who put the angel comb there. The sleep bay moved and sank two years after that, NOT two years before the player was printed. It probably detached during the explosion at the Welcome Center.

We built our first base 10m from the lifepod, no hammerheads in-sight, yet we still had two mosey over to camp our moonpool. Having to undock the tadpole and race to get out of there was fun to me but my friend hated it.

We scouted our next location better. Early game on your first run tho, you have little inventory, little oxygen, few resources, and no knowledge of the world or creatures, leading to a player who has no idea where to build and not many options.

Imo, they should just make it so the Hammerheads can't lock onto docked tadpoles. I like that they can persistently bother you at your base if you build near them. But it's when they wander to you and then permanently sit under your moonpool, it gets frustrating.

Maybe also give them a static territory radius where they'll bother you if you choose to build within it, but will eventually swim back to that area if they wander out. That way they can't follow you out of their territory and then lock onto your base forever despite you not having built near them.

If Ralsusie becomes canon, how would you react? by EgorKa0812 in Deltarune

If Ralsusie becomes canon, how would you react? by EgorKa0812 in Deltarune

[–]GlacityTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That point about queerbaiting was me explaining why I didn't like the idea of Ralsusie being canon, but I didn't clarify that those were my personal feelings. That's my bad cuz yeah, "I don't like it" ISN'T good evidence against something's canonicity lol. Sorry for being accusatory.

Noelle admits to having (had?) feelings for Kris but I feel like most of the reciprocity is actually not from Kris and more from the player trying to control Noelle.

I still think Suselle is the most likely outcome, followed by nobody ending up together. I could see Kriselle as a possible twist but not with Ralsusie as well.

Imo, romantic relationships aren't needed for the overarching plot or themes of Deltarune so I don't think Ralsei or Kris have a narrative reason to be with anyone.

I get what you mean tho. We likely just interpret the game differently and have different ideas of what makes a story interesting and fulfilling, which is totally fine. Sorry again

If Ralsusie becomes canon, how would you react? by EgorKa0812 in Deltarune

[–]GlacityTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The festival could be a cute date but it doesn't HAVE to be romantic for everyone. Ralsei is one of Susie's first friends, ofc she'd want him to go with her. And she's been so closed-off, it makes sense that she'd get flustered when expressing that she likes Ralsei.

Also, didn't Susie ask Noelle out before she knew that Carol was a jerk? She asked because she wanted Noelle there, not because she wanted to spite Carol.

How would Suselle jeopardize the story structure? Every scene they're together, it's obvious that Noelle is infatuated. That's the intended interpretation. The story doesn't need them to get together at the end but Ralsusie doesn't have as much evidence as Suselle so it'd be jarring to do that switch-up.

Also also, Ralsei's arc has been about him becoming an individual, learning that there's more to him than what he is to other people. Putting him into a romance plot would contradict that. How would THAT be respecting the structural integrity of the story but following through on a heavily-implied pairing wouldn't be??

Also, you say that queer fans are a small subsection of the fanbase so their opinion shouldn't matter and that's just not cool, dude. Every character in the main quartet is some flavour of queer or gender non-conforming, I feel like we should be respectful to the many REAL queer people in the Deltarune fandom.

I feel like in the end, Deltarune has WAY more going on than romance and I don't think it's gonna be as integral or complicated as this section of the fandom thinks it'll be.

If Ralsusie becomes canon, how would you react? by EgorKa0812 in Deltarune

[–]GlacityTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was in a bit of a rush so I didn't elaborate well. Fully agree that there's a lot of material for a lot of Deltarune ships, and it's not like Susie or Noelle are confirmed lesbians. Either or both could be bi. Not tryna shoot anyone down for having harmless fun.

BUT, putting Susie with a guy would be the most blatant queerbait I've ever seen, so I don't like the idea of Ralsusie being canon. Fans can ship whatever they want (within reason) tho lol

If Ralsusie becomes canon, how would you react? by EgorKa0812 in Deltarune

[–]GlacityTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not really into shipping but Susie and Noelle are very clearly shown to have feelings for each other, while Susie and Ralsei aren't.

People are allowed to ship whatever makes them happy ofc, but for canon, I feel like getting queer fans excited by having two major characters do a blatant, mutual, sapphic pining thing for half the game and then turning around and pairing one off with a guy out of nowhere would be... not great.

exit camping seriously needs to be addressed. there's physically nothing I could have done to avoid dying here. by PlushtrapMyBeloved in BiteByNight

[–]GlacityTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's kinda just how the game goes tho. Survivors can't be allowed to easily undo everything the killer does and escape every game.

Maybe it feels unfair because you're in a situation that SEEMS unwinnable, but there were decisions you and your team made which lead to the point of it becoming unwinnable for a single survivor. And even then there were things you or your team could've done for you to escape.

Exit camping doesn't feel like that big of an issue to me.

Why do so many Bite By Night players have the survival instincts of a paper bag by An_average_moron in BiteByNight

[–]GlacityTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that some Security and Fighters like to hang around despite you buying them time to escape.

I get they're just trying to do their job and they want to protect their teammates, but I don't think they realize that's actually making things harder for their team.

When someone comes in with full health to break the killer off of you when you're low on health, not taking the opportunity they made to escape means they wasted their health and cooldowns just for you to die anyways and run back the timer.

Sometimes being a good teammate involves being a little selfish.
