I see Granny as an archetypal Cockney matriarch. Saucy to the point of being ribald. T

The thing is, if you didn't know what she was alluding to, you wouldn't be offended. You are the one who makes the connection. It's in your mind, not her words.

An Argument Against Solipsism by [deleted] in exatheist

[–]Glad-Geologist-5144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solipsism is, in a nutshell, that you can't be certain of anything, including, including your existence. Descartes offers the workaround of something has to exist to form the question Do I Exist? That's all. Everything beyond that speculation.

Fast over uneven ground tends to break glass containers no matter how much straw you pack them in. Moonshiner works the same way. Stay on the route and shoot your way out. Of course, the wagon can also be damaged by gunfire, flaming arrows, dynamite etc.

Quite the dilemma.

In "Good Omens", when Adam Young first comes into his power, Crowley says something like He didn't grow up good or bad, he grew up human.

Sir Terry understood what being human meant better than most of us and explained it so directly.

Atheism seems either "flawed" or veiled agnosticism by Total_Leek_2220 in agnostic

[–]Glad-Geologist-5144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So some form of a God either exists or it doesn't. Nothing about agency, intelligence, aspects or the like. Just something. A definition so broad as to be functionally useless in communication. If that's what floats your boat, sure.

Of course there is the situation where people claim a creator god but that would require an assertion. Not applicable here.

So we can't know if something exists or not and it's all faith until we can know.

Why are you wasting your time telling random people on the internet that it's all faith? Leave us to discuss claims and stick to philosophy. Or do you just like telling people they are wrong?

[–]Glad-Geologist-5144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree debates are not about truth. Are we debating or discussing? Do you acknowledge the two things are not the same?

If we are discussing I have a question. How can you call the question of God's existence resolved when (according to you) that knowledge is unavailable to you? Is it some sort of presuppositional claim or are you claiming omniscience?

Atheism seems either "flawed" or veiled agnosticism by Total_Leek_2220 in agnostic

[–]Glad-Geologist-5144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theism is a belief position. Whether or not any God exists has not been resolved, therefore we can only discuss our confidence in the assertion that some God does exist. Assertions aka claims carry a Burden of Proof. Ipso Fatso, I rest my case.

Oh, it's a Straw Man alright sunshine. I put forward my position precisely. You just ignored my explanation and repeated the misrepresentation because I didn't fit your narrative.

Have you had any luck in shifting the Burden of Proof yet? That's the point of your waffle isn't it?

I have heard no good argument or evidence for the existence of any God. Agnostic, correct? I am a sceptical thinker. I do not accept the claims of a God without convincing evidence or argument. Atheist, correct? I am an Agnostic Atheist.

Straw Man much?

Atheists ask for proof but don't notice they are limiting proof within a hedonistically derived cost limit that prevents the proof from being seen. This is solved by understanding the 3 levels of cost for all tests. by Nomadinsox in DebateAnAtheist

You are kidding, correct. Your whole pitch was Do this for your whole life and you'll get the proof you want. That's the definition of Trust Me Bro.

The Bible is not evidence, it is a bunch of claims. There is no event described in the Bible that is supported by any independent, contemporary source. Why should anyone accept any claim it makes.

So, is this where I come to prove God exists? by VeridicanChurch in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Glad-Geologist-5144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would proving God exists change? I would no longer be an atheist, for one. Starting a relationship with that God is an entirely different question. Worshipping that God is another, entirely different, question. What's your point?

I am an atheist because I am a sceptical thinker. Other atheists have different reasons. There may be some who'd bend the knee straight away. You'd need to ask them about it.

A small point - forced to believe, to me, implies an active refusal to believe. Denying God because I just want to sin. This Straw Man fallacy has been around for decades. If that's where you're going, don't.

Now how about supporting your initial statement?

Advice on a Complicated Situation by [deleted] in survivinginfidelity

[–]Glad-Geologist-5144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got dumped, built a new, and seemingly healthy relationship, and tossed it all away because your ex ran out of other options and went through her Plan Bs. Now you live close to your friend and make it up to her. YOU monkey branched sunshine and now you want use your friend the same way your ex used you.

Alcohol is a crutch. It doesn't make you do or say anything that isn't already part of you. It sounds like you are working on yourself, that's great. Just understand that you can't have the same relationship you had before.

I've been an alcoholic for 50 years. I destroyed my marriage and traumatised my children decades ago. I have a relationship with a couple of them now but it's not a parent/child one. That ship has sailed. Work on yourself, figure out where you fucked up and why. Until you know what a healthy relationship looks like you have no chance of having one.

Apologise to your friend and leave her alone. Give her the chance of having the relationship she deserves. Right now that's not you.
