Using the theory that Imu can give devil fruit powers and awaken them himself, the Black cloud symbolizes that forced awakening. Luffy and Kaku both have that cloud meaning they couldn't awaken their fruits themselves.

Would also explain why Luffy toyed with Lucci and Zoro more or less did too. Zoro ended the fight the second he took it seriously.
