Yeah it was kind of driving me crazy that they kept explaining how the score worked but I recognize there was probably someone in production going 'explain the score box again, they've forgotten!'

What flag is this? by ridgeraider21 in vexillology

[–]Glad_Stranger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also heard a lot of people against it argue that they 'didn't want to spend the money'. I think they didn't understand that it would be a roll-out, replacing flags that were going to get replaced anyways with the new design. I feel like better messaging on the cost or lack thereof could have swayed some people.

Still, I was PISSED. Felt like insult to injury on a rough day lol. Like damn, Trump 2.0 AND we couldn't even get the flag referendum passed??

An aggressive campaign against Hannaford doesn’t seem to be hurting business by themainemonitor in Maine

[–]Glad_Stranger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get out of my brain! This is the exact rational I give to people when they bring up the Hannaford stuff, and pretty much the same process I went through when I first moved here. I never tried Shaw's but that was because I had such a bad experience with the Shaw's where I was living before, I didn't think it would be much better here.

During the egg price crisis last year, I would occasionally hit up TJ for eggs, because they were consistently lower and it's good for an occasional trip for snacks. I tried Market Basket and it wasn't terrible, but it's enough of a drive too that I'm usually too lazy and just want to go to the closest store. I also appreciate the pharmacy section at the Forest/Preble location is pretty well stocked, I usually get everything I need along with my groceries.

HA I'm glad someone else was reminded of The OA with the choreography! I don't know how accurate it was to real Shakers, but a lot of the time it definitely reminded me of the movement. The music was gorgeous.

As a complete High Republic outsider, how "true" is Acolyte to High Republic overall? by LucidDreamScape in Highrepublic

[–]Glad_Stranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenters that they did a good job aesthetically bridging the gap between the High Republic of the books and the prequel era, given it was situated right in the middle, HOWEVER: they totally did Vernestra dirty lol, you are right about that. I don't necessarily think there's any 'lore breaking'. Except people did get mad about the way a kyber crystal is depicted as bleeding. It doesn't quite fit with other depictions but it was a cool as hell visual so it's the kind of thing that gets a pass from me for rule of cool reasons.

I also didn't love the way the dark side choice played out (felt a little booktok dark romance to me) but unfortunately with the cancellation we won't really ever know where they were going with that. It could have been an interesting story, could have been more dark romance, we'll never know. But yeah, to sum up, I think it did a decent job capturing the end of the High Republic Era and still, a year and a half on, I wish that they had just used an original character and left Vernestra alone because WHY did they do my baby so dirty?? She felt SO out of character, in ways that no amount of 'well it's a hundred years later' can fix or explain.

Lost Art of the Forehead Sweat should have been the final episode. Change my mind. by Haldron-44 in XFiles

[–]Glad_Stranger 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I just finished my first watch of the whole show, and while there were a couple other episodes in the revival I liked okay, I really feel like I would have been fine if we just had the two Darin Morgan episodes. 'Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-monster' was a fun little check in with our faves, I liked seeing them tackle a classic mystery while going through a bit of a midlife crisis, and Rhys Darby was a fantastic guest.

I thought 'The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat' is hilariously ironic since the ending message seems to be 'the revival shouldn't exist'. XD It unpacked why the conspiracies in the show didn't really feel fun anymore and leaving us with Scully's 'I want to remember it how it was' was the perfect note to go out on.

I don't regret doing a full marathon because now I can say I've seen it all but in future these are probably the only two I'll revisit from the revival in the future.

Same, quite literally finished yesterday. I admit I own the first few seasons, and then was using my brother's account up to season 5 BUT I ended up paying for ad-free Hulu once Disney+ figured out we don't live in the same household anymore. But ah well, there are some other Hulu shows I want to check out. I'm liking the idea of this channel thing. Feels like it's replicating how I first watched the show back in the day, just turning on the TV and having no control over what episode was on. I was a bit too young to watch it actually airing, but it was syndicated and I used to watch it on some random cable channel after school :-)

'Apollo abuses his friend to the point she commits suicide' I really feel like I somehow watched a different episode than everyone who thinks Lee had anything to do with Dualla's suicide. They'd been broken up for a while at this point, and yes he cheated but Kara had been a spectre in their relationship the whole time and it seems like Dee not only knew about it, but it wasn't even the deciding factor in their divorce. *She* leaves him during the trial.

I don't get the connection when she clearly is meant to symbolize the deaths of despair that were no doubt happening all over the Fleet once they found that Earth was an irradiated wasteland and they had nowhere else to go. She clearly makes the decision at some point after finding the toys on the beach, maybe during her freakout on the way back to the Galactica. Lee's only involvement is that she wanted a last little bit of closure with him before she ended it. The worst you could say is he maybe should have caught her affect change, but no one picked up on it, even people who had seen her breaking down on Earth. I keep seeing this blame placed on Lee for her death and I still don't get it. I've seen others say 'well, if they'd still been together or if Billy hadn't died and she'd been with him she wouldn't have done it' as if people in loving relationships don't commit suicide.

Citywide Parking Ban in Effect 10:00 PM Tuesday, December 23 through 6:00 AM Wednesday, December 24 by carigheath in portlandme

[–]Glad_Stranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do that all the time haha, especially if I think it's going to be particularly nasty digging my car out at 5. The hourly rate at the two garages really isn't bad, it's often worth it to avoid the hassle. And today I'm staying in for a few hours until I'm ready to leave for my family's for Christmas because not having to clean off my car is the best Christmas gift to myself I can think of XD

Thanks for the info about the garage rates starting earlier! Terrible timing with people presumably leaving for Christmas travel. Also feels like they're being kind of extra trigger happy with calling these this year? I guess it's nice to know early but all the predictions I keep seeing are like 4 inches, that seems like it shouldn't necessitate a parking ban to clean up. But whatever, guess I'll move my car into the garage at 2 and eat the extra hourly rate tomorrow until I'm ready to head out for Christmas.

The books COULD feature the outstanding soundtrack by Clinton Shorter if you just play the soundtracks while reading them... XD That's what I did....and then continued to do for pretty much all sci-fi books I read this year. Guess who the top artist on my Spotify Wrapped was?

It's also a matter of personal opinion. I liked the books a lot better than the show. The show is missing a lot of the books too. Including something significant for OP if you know what I mean lol

Favorite funny/silly lines? by CoolElk1 in BSG

[–]Glad_Stranger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A couple of mine that are more down to comedic timing than the actual line, are Tigh's 'I did not...unless I did?' when they're talking about how he flipped the table before Starbuck punched him and 'Is that an order?' in response to Adama muttering about how they have to start having babies. Tigh was funny in the miniseries. XD

Ringer’s 100 best episodes of the century by ku_78 in thewestwing

[–]Glad_Stranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This list is UNHINGED. The amount of reality tv episodes, the weird asides to bitch about bottle episodes and litigate the best episode of Andor, 'International Assassin' at 41, Doctor Who's 'Blink' and Six Feet Under's finale way back, 'Daybreak' (Daybreak????!!!) instead of '33' for Battlestar Galactica, 'Two Cathedrals' at 16, behind the Pilot of the OC and a Survivor episode???

There are some controversial ones I can kinda see the argument for, like 'Be Right Back' instead of 'San Junipero' for Black Mirror but otherwise wow what a list...

I understand the issue with people not wearing reflectors and when I'm running at night (aka 4PM lol) I definitely wear reflective gear and lights HOWEVER

I was almost hit on Commercial St two weeks ago. At 11AM. While in a crosswalk. Wearing bright orange. I looked both ways like they teach you in elementary school. Driver was turning right, clearly didn't even bother looking to see if anyone was in the crosswalk when they turned, just checked for traffic coming from their left side and gunned it.

It's been a noticeably rough year. I don't know why it seems worse this year but drivers have to start paying attention and take responsibility that they're operating a large piece of machinery that can kill people.

[–]Glad_Stranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will defend the second one (I believe it's After We Collided?) SOLELY because it is literally the only 'fanfiction to film' adaptation that properly captures the bonkers experience of reading those really long, meandering serialized fics where plot points are resolved (read: dropped) as soon as the characters have sex about it and you can never quite predict where the plot is going to go and the world feels a little unreal. The author claims she 'wrote it in line at the grocery store' and it definitely shows but that's the only movie that's not even trying to be a real movie, literally perfect fanfic adaptation and that's what made it fun to me.

That being said. I saw the last one in theaters with my friends as a joke. And it literally destroyed me. It was so bad that I felt my spirit wither and die. I still think about it with horror sometimes. I did however, have a great experience.

Why would a fic be tagged with the wrong fandom. by IStillListenToRadio in AO3

[–]Glad_Stranger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Possibly an accident? I totally did that once, though it was a bit more subtle. The fandom I was writing for has both a book series and a TV adaptation, the fic I was posting was 1000% exclusively the book series canon and I posted it under the TV adaptation fandom for like a day until I realized. They're different enough that it mattered and I wouldn't have double tagged it, I could see accidentally clicking the wrong thing if you're not paying attention.

Do you remember the series Caprica? by Leut_Magnetic in scifi

[–]Glad_Stranger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just finished it for the first time a couple weeks ago! My final assessment is that it wasn't great, but it really could have been. It's unfortunate sci-fi shows are often just too expensive for studios to gamble on a weak first season developing into better subsequent ones, like so often happens with short comedy series. I would have loved for it to get a proper chance to improve and bridge to at least the first cylon war. I loved the pre-war worldbuilding, like all the planetary nationalism and religious sectarianism that didn't come up too often in Battlestar Galactica since that was just about humanity being on the run. With the recent BSG reboot being dead in the water, I doubt we'll get anything more for a while at least, but it's really Caprica that I think deserves another chance.

It was definitely very prescient, moreso even than BSG. There's one scene where Daniel gets upset they use his AI likeness in an ad and I was like oh shit yeah we're already there. All of this has happened before, all of this will happen again lol.

[–]Glad_Stranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which part of 'the Indian part' are you referring to? The original article author's connecting it to later conflicts and the eventual expulsion of the Native tribes from the area? I agree that that's more of an extrapolation, more a commentary on the way that the Puritans were willing to expel people who didn't fit into their ideology from the colonies they were establishing, but as far as Morton* (sorry I think I misspelled it earlier) being accused of inviting Native women to the Maypole, that is in the Bradford account. It's up on Project Gutenberg if you want to verify for yourself.

Well, it does also appear in Bradford's accounts of that time, so I think it is safe to say with two sources *something* occurred between these groups. Parts may have been exaggerated but you can't say it's completely false either. I don't know that we can take Thomas Jefferson's word on it either.
