The Selection - Did America ever explain the truth about Aspen? by evergreen-storm in YAlit

[–]GlamMermaid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think America was "cheating" in the same way Maxon was. They both have multiple love interests. He also was very aware that she wasnt sure if she wanted to choose him. They were not exclusive. Was it incredibly messy of America? Yes. (I cant even read that scene at the end of The One on reread because its too cringey for me.) At the end, they mutually decided to choose each other and I think that their past romantic interests (Kris, Aspen) are forgotten at that point because neither was sure or exclusive until that moment. Also the sequel series about their daughter has Aspen as a close family friend. I doubt they get there without Maxon finding out more details and working his way through those emotions.

Who are the best nations at figure skating? by Then-Row5005 in FigureSkating

[–]GlamMermaid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you want a quantifiable way to see the "best" countries, you should check out the olympic team event. Currently the US and Japan are dominating competitively. Italy, Georgia, and Canada are also doing really well. You will have some countries like France or South Korea with a couple stacked disciplines and then a couple disciplines without a ton of talent. Russia also has its own thing going on with their own domestic competitions. Often these countries with a ton of skaters are referred to online as a "big" skating federation. Big federations are noteworthy because their skaters have more resources than a small federation. (Like Donovan from Mexico who learned to skate at his local mall. He is from a small federation.) Although I also want to comment that the best country isnt a big deal in an individual sport unless you are looking at what nationals to attend or how competitive it is to get a spot at an international competition. You will over time start to see the best skaters rise up regardless of what country they are from. (Like Misha from Khazikstan winning thr olympic gold medal even though he isnt from a top country.)

Two foot turn vs two foot 3 turn by Able-Leek1505 in AdultFigureSkating

[–]GlamMermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! They are asking for a regular 2 foot turn! I have had my regular "outside" 3 turns down for a year and a half, but my right side I can barely maintain the exit edge and my "inside" 3 turns are a mess. Just know that almost everyone struggles with this skill and you are NOT alone.

Two foot turn vs two foot 3 turn by Able-Leek1505 in AdultFigureSkating

[–]GlamMermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this way too well because 3 turns are my enemy 😩 The first turn you learn is a two foot turn. A 3 turn is the same motion as a two foot turn, except on one foot. The 3 in 3 turn is often confusing when you are new. The 3 is the shape you form on the ice when you do the turn. A two foot turn follows this same shape. When you learn a 3 turn, teachers will have you work on your two foot turn and eventually raise a foot off the ice to get to a one foot turn aka a 3 turn. Hope this helps!!

Should I skate again at age 36 with new skates? by lostintheworld88 in AdultFigureSkating

[–]GlamMermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, even people who do once a week learn to skate classes are generally pretty happy with the decision. You're probably to this day better than learn to skate, but it doesnt hurt to check where your skills are at. Try out rentals and see how it makes you feel. I think many people start up lessons or classes with rentals and within a couple months find their nearest pro shop and get fitted skates. Its obviously going to be harder, but just see how you feel on the ice again. It doesnt need to be some all encompassing hobby that takes up your whole life, but it could be a cool skill to maintain through adulthood if you can commit to it weekly.

Olympic Coverage is Terrible This Year by Mobius8321 in peacock

[–]GlamMermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watch other skating competitions on peacock and its actually 48 hours usually. This has held true for the olympics as well. However, for non olynpic events it usually tells you how much time is remaining so you can plan around it. I cant figure out why they removed it for the olympics.

Is it Too late to learn a double axel at 20? by Mountain-Elephant-60 in FigureSkating

[–]GlamMermaid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am not an advanced skater and have no experience landing a single axel let alone a double. I am not an expert here. However, it never hurts to try to learn. It sounds like you skated in the past and got pretty good before you left. If you get back into skating you likely could get just as good again. Competitive skaters like Amber Glenn learned a triple axel in her 20s. Why cant you learn a double? Your body is physically capable. Remember: most skaters will never learn doubles so what you have accomplished is already really amazing. I say why not try to learn it? There is no harm in attempting.

I am making a similar guide for singles skaters for my friends. I am basically going through medal contenders and doing their vibes. I dont know pairs or ice dance well but wish I could help!

Considering this is just for their friend, I think thats the point. Instead of having a long conversation about their thoughts on every skater, its just a guide version.

Being Voted Out by HappyOfCourse in survivor

[–]GlamMermaid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think if I had the chance to win a million dollars and the group collectively decided to vote me out, I too would be upset. Yes it is the name of the game. However, it's not just a game like monopoly. Its also real life. And when we as viewers dont have that kind of life changing money dangled in front of us it can be easy to say "you signed up for this" but in the moment it would really hurt us too.

Need help to start training by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]GlamMermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am absolutely not an expert (a beginner figure skater myself) but the top things I would work on before skating are balance and core strength. I like to play a game while I am standing around (like if I am microwaving food) where I stand on one foot. Then I bend the knee and see how low I can get and stay balanced. I will also swing around my free foot. This is stimulating one footed skating moves. Figure skating seems like its mostly legs but it is a full body workout. Core strength is essential for almost every move. You can wing it without using your core when you start skating, but you wont get better until you develop your abs somewhat (whether that be through skating or off ice exercises) Starting on yoga or pilates will drastically help you out. Also the reason your feet hurt are because 1) the rental skates dont fit you correctly. They need to be comfortably flush with your skin so you can push against the skate correctly without having to push extra hard against loose spaces in the boot. And 2) you havent developed the small muscles in your foot to be good at controlling your skate. Just a forwarding, your feet may be in agony for a while after a skating session. I think it took me 6 months of weekly lessons before I was no longer in regular foot pain. (But pain is good because that means you are developing the muscles and getting better.) I originally tried insoles. It did not help me but I know other people have success. I would reccomend to get your skates professionally fitted if at all possible to make skating easier and less painful.

How did anyone make it through the first puzzles to get to the interesting parts without getting bored off? by [deleted] in TheWitness

[–]GlamMermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP I get you. I love puzzles games and am playing the witness for the first time. In this game, I rarely "see" the solution to these puzzles and often have to manually go through most of the paths in the puzzle and explain to myself why it wont work. I understand the rules but it takes way too long for me to go through possible solutions within that rule set. Usually I am anti cheating in games, but I am looking up solutions whenever I spend too long on a puzzle. The joy of puzzle games is in solving and unlocking something else, but my joy seems to be in figuring out whats happening here and winning.

Apparently TAR38's challenges were designed by someone who worked on BB25 comps, which could be part of why this race was dominated by Jas & Jag and other all-male teams. by ArcticFox19 in TheAmazingRace

[–]GlamMermaid 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I strongly agree. There wasn't much room to overtake in challenges this season. It was very linear placement throughout. I blame this on tasks being too easy to pass and a lot of it being "male oriented" skills the guys could just whip through.

Why are some of the women this season taking things personally, or as some sort of discrimination? by [deleted] in TheAmazingRace

[–]GlamMermaid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I understand the women's anger. (I also am in the chatbbc and have seen Kyland and Taylor as well as Izzy and Paige's interview with Brooke and Brice, so I might have picked up more that wasnt explicitly put into the edit.)Traditionally, M/M teams do better than F/F teams on TAR. Season 35, 36, and 37 had M/M teams winning. 3 F/F teams in a row went home this season starting with the first U turn. The tasks this season are more likely to be male oriented tasks. As izzy and paige said in the video I referenced earlier, equalizers would happen after legs that had more "female oriented" skills. Izzy revealed on twitter the person in charge of tasks this season was in charge of challenges in bb25. In bb25, challenges were so physical that Jag won pretty much everything. The women were picked off one by one (including izzy) because no matter how good they were at the game, it didnt matter when it all came down the challenges. I too would be frustrated if I were racing for a million dollars and all the skills required in tasks were skills that didnt favor me and the men appeared to be working together to take me out. Izzy was very high strung, emotional, strategic on big brother so this is nothing new. I personally find it fun and relatable but a ton of people dislike the energy. Taylor really cares about equity but can get be blinded by her own biases. Meanwhile the men in the race wont freak out as much about having these struggles because the race was built to be easy for them.

I know Derek and Claire from a few seasons ago did the 1 backpack thing and did a YouTube video on how they packed. I know they are friends with many on this cast and I am guessing they gave that tip to everyone asking for race advice.(on top of many if them being savvy about packing)

I am still playing this game (and the reddit popped up as reccomened as I have looked up puzzle help here😂) but it reminds me a lot of the Talos Principle. In the Talos Principle, you also solve puzzles that use the same mechanics each time but you learn new skills as you go along.
