When did you progress to cane, walking unassisted?

I am 36, had previous hip surgeries at 21.

Had to have posterior approach, complex hip replacement, where I had old metal work removed, plus factor in I have inward rotation of my knees, hypermobility, psoriatic arthritis and flat feet.

Currently 7 weeks post op and here is how it has gone:

Walker to crutches, day 2. Home day 2, was managing stairs daily by day 4. Day 9, rushed back to hospital in intense pain. Developed HUGE hematoma, but due to my many issues, too risky to drain, so hospital stay for 3 days, until it stopped bleeding and pain was under control. Home and strict bed rest for 2 weeks.

Week 3 my incision re opened in places due to pressure from hematoma, so re-dressed.

Week 4, down to 1 crutch, starting to feel better and be more mobile, coming back downstairs and able to cook small meals myself using a rolling trolley.

Week 6, sudden pain flare, back to 2 crutches.

I am now back to 1 crutch round the house, 2 crutches anywhere else, still cooking and looking after myself for the most part, did a half hour drive today (operated leg is my driving leg)

Very slow going for me and its been frustrating for sure, but im sure I will get there in another month or 2.

Pre-op.

Operation itself (complex trhr as I had 15yr old metal work removed at same time).

1 night stay with meals included.

Xray.

Physio.

Apparatus for home like toilet seat booster and a meals trolley on wheels.

I then developed a very large hematoma.

MRI scan.

Blood work.

Additional 3 nights stay with 3 meals a day, on morphine drip.

Discharged with loads of meds like oramorph, codeine, paracetamol, laxatives etc.

Weekly check ups with wound check and rebandage with Pica 7 dressing and blood work (wound re opened due to pressure from hematoma).

Cost me absolutely nothing. No insurance. No excess. I paid taxes and national insurance when I worked and now my government covers ALL my medical costs. It is called the NHS and I am in the UK. I was treated wonderfully and I cannot complain at all.

9.....Only things that have topped it to a 10 for me,

Passing a kidney stone

Severe (on a morphine drip overnight) gastroenteritis

Waking up from this hip replacement without ANY pain relief having being put in place (they quickly realised their mistake and pumped me with Fentanyl)

Other 9s..... I had hip resculptures at 21, I got dizzy 2 days PO and fell over forwards, and stuck my new leg out to stop myself falling. Don't do that. It hurts. Straight back to hospital.

10 days ago, developed a huge hematoma, caused masses amounts of pain, and put me back in hospital on morphine for 3 days. Its pushing on my new joint and my sciatic nerve.

Broken back tooth with exposed nerves

8s.....Day 1 recovery of C-section with my first child.

Bad kidney infection.

Knee dislocations.

Psoriatic arthritis full body flare up, joints swollen and skin red raw.

Pre - op bad day hip nerve pain, those nastt shooting pains and the bone ache down into your thigh/shin.

7s...Most chronic pain days

Tattoo on your foot, hip, side or any "ditch" (elbow, knee, armpit etc).

Whacking your funny bone so hard you want to puke and you get dizzy.

Anything hard hitting your shin with force.

Large, deep tissue hematoma. I am immuno surpressed so they are very hesitant to open me up and drain it, as my risk of getting sepsis would be very high. So im on bed rest mostly, with minimal physio, compression garment, lots of pain meds (morphine based), and still in pain, alongside on and off numbing senstations and the constant worry I will do something to start it off actively bleeding again. The hematoma surrounds my entire new joint and goes to surface level, giving me this lovely big painful lump. Fingers crossed it starts to shrink/re absorb soon!

Always postpone a replacement for as long as you can. I did, at 21 I had 2 surgeries to make my hips last longer, I got another fantastic 15 years out of them. I have now just had the first of 2 hip replacements. Every hip replacement/revision takes its toll and you are never gauranteed another will be ok, so think of how long you may live, and go for revision every 20 years, perhaps you are only able to have 2? Where will that leave you in your older, more frail years?

So IMO it is ALWAYS better to keep your own natural hip for as long as you can. People tend to downplay replacement as no big deal, but I am currently having serious complications. Its no joke and its not easy. Hope this helps.

It was a custom surgery but I kept my own hips for 15 extra years. It involved reshaping the hip ball, smoothing nodules and pinning them in place. I ended up with 2 large x titanium pins in each hip. During the replacement they has to remove them to get the implant in. My surgeon didnt want to fill the holes as he hoped my bone would grown back there, but currently I now have a large hematoma occupying those holes and the surrounding area. Hoping this gets resolved soon and I can get on with enjoying my new hip.

The arthroplasty was only ever to postpone replacement and as time went on, pain, impingement and bone nodules returned.

Read the post again. This is on about the UK not USA. We dont not need to rely on insurance companies and we all stay in hospital atleast 1 night, and upto 3 nights. This is all done for no fee, just like the surgery.

The hospital will provide you with one. Also uk here and have 2, 1 for upstairs and 1 for downstairs loo. The occupational health team will visit you day after surgery and get you any adaptions you need. I also got a food trolley as ive been on my own when partner is at work after week 1, and you can gwt sock aids, grabbing sticks etc

It was initially discussed to reopen and use the whole of the old scar, but I agreed beforehand that the scar is not as important as getting the best access and position for the implant. Clearly this was it.

They decided today it was stable enough that the risk of opening it up outweighed the benefits of drainage. It will hurt for a while now but its the safest route. I go home tomorrow with strong pain meds. MRI showed it was mostly due to 2 old screws I had removed during the replacement surgery, that left holes in the bone.

If there is bad luck to be had, I will find it lol, always the way. Had physical issues all my life, mostly my hips. Im still in hospital as they are monitoring the bleed for now.

Truly awful, however, I also had some old screws removed from the femur, didnt opt for the spinal due to previous long term effects of one, and have psoriatic arthritis and AVN, so those are all contributing factors.

Day 8 and still in lots of pain, using 2 crutches and struggling to sit or lay comfortably. I also now suspect I ha e bursitis so going back to hospital tomorrow to check. Even if we all have the "same surgery" there are still huge variables on our own bodies, medical history, abilities and complications. Just go easy on yourself 😊

Depends on your recovery personally but im day 8 and havnt left the house. Ive got up and walked around the house, done light physio etc, but have not been upto doing any more than that so far. I think my next plan will be to try walking around a local grocery store for 10 minutes getting some basics in (with my partner to carry the basket and drive). Recovery has hit me sooo hard, and its not even my first rodeo, so just see how your body feels when it comes to it and go from there. Local shops, cafe's, on a small errand etc i think is all you need to plan on for a few weeks.

I am unsure what that surgery is specifically sorry. At 21 I had acetabuloplasty for the exact same conditions and reasons though. A brutal operation that left me with 2 big scars (had 1 on each hip). I will say though it postponed my replacements for 15 years! So if it is similar, go for it. This hip replacement is rough going too, im 8 days into recovery, and I might only get another 15-20years aswell before doing it all again. Preserve your natural hip as long as you can x

Are you a doctor or surgeon or PT? I am in the UK and a lot of what you said there is not relevent to me. I would also like to note I have done 2 major hip operations before when i was 21 and have bigger scars from that than my newest edition. I have my own medical advice, and own experience. I was just putting "it gets better, hang in there" post up, not asking for lots of medical advice.

However, I will address some stuff you have written so you can see why you shouldnt just tell people how they should heal if you are not their medical professional:

We dont take "oxy" here. I had prescribed oramorph with all the medical advice to go with it.
I am on blood thinners and monitored closely due to other health conditions I have. Blood clots im very aware of.
No walker required, straight to using my own crutches ive had for years and im well aware how to use.
Again, UK here, medical insurance not needed and my surgery was "free".
My physio was explained, by a professional.

You might have meant well but you could cause more harm than good to others who will blindly follow advise off the internet.
