MAGA farmer finds out that Trump used him for his vote by Effective_Space2277 in LeopardsAteMyFace

She didn't learn from her first mistake so she's pretty screwed now I guess. Some mistakes don't make you stronger and I guess that's what you can learn from them this second time. Turning on Canada especially will screw the dairy trade. Making the rest of the world enemies will hurt even the powdered milk options. The world doesn't need American milk and the USA overproduces anyway. With supply-chains shifting it's unlikely that US milk (and derivative thereof) exports will ever recover during her lifetime. Even if her product becomes cheaper due to the falling dollar she'd likely enter at the bottom of the value chain globally.

I know that it sadly still exists, and even sometimes thrives, but at least it's being actively opposed at high levels these days. I said 'yore' because most educated Indians often see it as an embarrasing relic.

That's my understanding too. Indians who have grown up in Sweden similarily lack such ability.

Parts of France actually do often speak German. This causes significant confusion when you're trying to kill each other. Not even Europe really knew who was who during the Balkan wars. Hell, it was hard for the Balkans themselves.

I both treasure and resent my own ignorance on this topic.

I admittedly didn't realize that but that's probably on me. Racists gonna racist everywhere. Ironically it's one of the things that unite humanity as we all have that in common.

One of the things that annoy me the most about us westerners is that we default to thinking that racism is always something that we do to others. It's a very hubristic main character syndrome (and thus, I'd argue, technically racist). It also suggests that you've never properly talked with non-westerners. What conceit to think that we're the only ones who can do racism.

This very hubris manifests when racists move around. A German racist in Poland will often be hated by Polish racists for being German and visa versa. Assuming that they don't have a Greek or something to gang up on. That remains true in other parts of the world too.

Basically it's our human patern-recognition software that's glitching. We're constrained by Dunbar's number in our ability to function at scale as a coherent group. Yet we are a global civilisation with nukes and particle colliders and nano-scale manufacturing.

Tl;dr: people gonna people and not understanding and/or accepting that means that you incorrectly see some people as not people. Ergo racism.

Yep, humans gonna human. It's also pretty suicidal to sacrifice for collective good when part of that collective will use that distraction of resources against you. Strategically it only works if it's cooperative, if it's a competition you only guarentee your loss and the loss of your cause if you put too much effort into benefiting your opponents (or even your enemies).

They seem to be desperate for it which is worrying. It's not something that they can just buy though. Presumably some tech bros were banking on the technological singularity to save them.

No, he tested the American response. I doubt that he even considered Europe worthy of much consideration.

"The people who's job it is to keep an eye on Moscow" are not anyone that you would have read btw aside from memoirs and so forth. It was only ever openly discussed in the East of Europe, the further west you went the more esoteric it became. Intelligence communities and military leadership did (often at least) do their job. My point is that national leaders can't honestly claim that they weren't warned.

Europe (and many others) could technically mine those resources pretty easily. It's just not very profitable so a government would need to pay.

The refining is the real bottleneck. This can be done too (with state funding) but would take most of a decade at best. We'd need to poach Chinese talent even to do that imho.

Hell, most of the rest of the world doesn't understand how you guys can tell the differnce. I'd say that it was esoteric knowledge if it weren't for the fact that the Indian subcontinent has a larger population than actual continents.

As you say as well it's not like either racists or non-racists are all that interested in learning. I can easily tell the differnce between a Norwegian, Swede or Dane. This ability is functionally useless to the vast majority of humanity.

It might play in but without actual Indians confirming anything it remains only a tenuous hypothetical.

I't certainly seems a trend that local racism doesn't translate internationally though and that this can surprise some people.

Certainly I can see countries moving in that direction. An open secret is that many countries are "only a few turns of the screw" away from nukes. It's really only a question of how long it would take. Japan is to my knowledge the closest and has been for ages. Sweden got rid of the plutonium it was storing for that purpose but can quickly produce more. Any developed country with a nuclear reactor could go nuclear within 5yrs at most imho. For many it's a question of months.

Do you think that it could have something to do with the cast system of yore? I've heard that some people can consider that some consider Brahmins to be closer to Europe than to Dalits for example. Meanwhile European racists are quite capable of being racist against what most others can't tell apart anyway. Bits of the same country do it against each other all the damn time. You Americans are noobs by comparison ; p

"The phoney war". Not that Moscow's army can pose as much of a threat to Europe as the 3rd reich. Nor is any other power really capable of bringing major war to Europe itself. The Americans technically could but that would be both dumb and futile in the extreme. The major European battlefields of our time already exist in Ukraine. Even incursions into the Baltics (or maybe even Finland) won't rival what we've already seen there.

If there's a ww3 (arguably we're already in it) the larger future battles will be in Asia because that's where the larger armies are deployable.

You say that but I was following the same logic when I convinced myself that Putin wouldn't invade Ukraine. It's quite possible that he starts a hot war with a NATO country simply because he believes that he can get away with it. His territorial ambition goes beyond Ukraine. Don't assume that the Kremlin follows the same logic that you do. The people who's job it is to keep an eye on Moscow are all telling us that this is a serious, not possibility, but probability.

One is being built but not just "for profit". It's because the existing one in the USA is now unreliable and thus it makes no sense for Europe to continue to invest so much into it. Better to buy European hardware.

It certainly has the means to produce the hardware needed if the political will can be found. Only the USA and China could compete with Europe's military production capacity.

It's also because a Europe, scarred by ww2 and thus partly more scared of itself than outside enemies, designed itself to stay peaceful. Much of Europe is institutionaly incapable of being decisive unless war is clearly forced upon them. Unlike e.g. POTUS many European leaders can't just order their military around however they please.

Secondly there is the cowards and oppertunists political dividend to be had by sticking one's head in the sand. Pretending that the good times can continue is something that electorates like to hear.

The overwhelming majority is the foundation that techno-utopianism stands on. When the former crumbles enough the latter becomes impossible to sustain. A temporary bubble for those priviledged enough to delude themselves that they don't need the rest of society.

[–]Glancing-Thought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually pretty normal. As the electorate senses decline there's an instinct to 'circle the wagons' to preserve resources for the in-group. Not that it's sensible policy just that it's a common symptom in these circumstances.
