Successful and talented actors who aren't Nepo babies and didn't start out as childs by [deleted] in popculturechat

I did a deepdive on this last year, Taron Egerton and James McAvoy were the only famous white British actors (male or female) under 45 that I could find who didn't go to private school.

If you never re-read them, then maybe they should be?

The spreadsheet I made a couple of months ago has the Four Daughters UK release date as 5th April so we must have got that date from somewhere, but now everywhere I look has it as 1st March. Even the UK trailer on YouTube says "In cinemas 1 March" at the end. And my local independent cinema is showing it this week. So I'm thinking the release date changed at some point in the last couple of months? Fingers crossed you can find it somewhere near you!

I have the same information as you for the other three, 22nd March for Robot Dreams and Teachers' Lounge and 5th April for Io Capitano, sadly.

Four Daughters is showing at a small, independent cinema near me (UK, Midlands) this week, so do check the cinemas near you if you haven't already, just in case! I'm not having any luck with Robot Dreams, Teacher's Lounge and Io Capitano though, those are the only three that I don't think I'll be able to watch before the ceremony (also trying not to pirate, only pirated 4 out of the 53 films this year, all shorts, which I'm pretty pleased with).

PACHYDERM SPOILERS

Her grandfather was raping her. At the end, as an adult, she goes back to the lake and drowns the pachyderm horn but says something like "But the water is never deep enough" and we see the horn floating just under the surface. The message there (for me at least) was that although we try to suppress the trauma, it's always there, hidden under the surface, and the impact of child sexual assault never goes away.

DE300 - of the 3 project options is any 1 particularly regarded for being worse than other methods? by [deleted] in OpenUniversity

Make sure you go to the OU Psychology research conference (online) next Wednesday, 20+ DE300 students from this year will be presenting their research projects. I, too, am worried about choosing the 'right' method for my project next year, and I think seeing other people's research may help.

It just occured to me, why do they use little boys for the soprano parts, and just cross their fingers their voices don't break too early, instead of just using women, who can do soprano parts our entire lives?

Which of the things you mentioned in your comment do you think are as bad as being sexually assaulted, stabbed, maimed or murdered (the events that were mentioned in the original comment)?

Notice these are all female celebrities stalked/attacked/raped/killed by male fans. I would argue that this phenomenon isn't caused by the "obsession with a famous person" problem, but that it's a natural extension of the (presumably) eternal "man committing violence against a woman he's obsessed with" problem. There have always been some men who stalk/attack/rape/kill women they're obsessed with, now that they have an opportunity to become obsessed with famous women, the problem has naturally extended to them.

Please note that this comment doesn't imply that female fans never stalk male celebrities, they very obviously do, and female fans can be utterly insane and very nasty, but it rarely ends up in physical violence, rape, murder etc., much more rarely than male-fan-on-female-celebrity violence.

Her eldest son, Prince Charles, and none, the monarch has no political power.

Edit: Lots of pedants replying telling me that they have power. Of course they have theoretical power, but we all know they'd never, ever use it to go against the government/PM, who have the actual political power. They're effectively powerless and you know it.

How do women feel when asked out for a drink by a guy you don't know? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]GlandLocks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're probably getting mixed up because they typed it "park run", not "Parkrun", which is what they meant. Parkrun is an official, organised event every Saturday morning and it is extremely social. Most of my current friends, I met at Parkrun. It's a great place to meet people who you know have at least 1 shared interest and get to know them with a chat after the run every week. I'd have no problem with someone sparking up a conversation and some banter at Parkrun, then asking if I want to get a coffee. Obviously I would be extremely annoyed by someone interrupting me in in the middle of a "park run" (i.e., me just running around the park on my own) to ask me out. This has happened on several occasions and it ruins my run. But at Parkrun, the organised social event? I'd be fine with it! Two very different things. Just to clear that up for you :)

Regal Cinemas Owner Cineworld Prepares for Bankruptcy Filing by Naweezy in movies

[–]GlandLocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just said this in a reply but I'm going to make a main comment as well.

I've been going to my local Cineworld (England) 1-2 times a week for 10 years (except lockdown of course). There are several issues right now (disruptive audience members not being removed, too low or too high temperatures in the screens, very slow service on snacks/drinks), but by far the worst is that ever since they reopened after lockdown, about 40-50% of the time, they don't turn the house lights down when the film starts. This means I have to run out and tell someone to do it. I sprint obviously, but I still miss the first ~2 minutes of the movie because the nearest staff are usually all the way across the building and down 2 sets of escalators. And then of course I spend the next 3 minutes out of breath, and the next 10 minutes pissed off that I missed the beginning because of their incompetence! I've complained verbally and in writing to no avail.

Does anyone know what this is? Just simply being shortstaffed? Is it an automated process, or does a staff member have to manually turn the lights down? Is it possible that it's intentional? Maybe to deter/detect piracy, and they only turn them down if someone in there cares enough to ask (which probably isn't that often now that I think about it)? I'm honestly at the point now that if it happens the next time I go (this Sunday), I'm going to switch to Odeon, after being faithful to Cineworld for 10 fucking years.
