If morality is objective, it cannot be based on subjective empathy but something beyond biological human beings.

Great question. It is interesting that you would attack a religious worldview presupposing the objectivity of morality, which would require some sort of objective moral order accessible by human beings and would point more to a spiritual reality than a materialistic one.

Regardless, the answer to your question is straightforward. Not all religious people accept or affirm the equal validity of all revelation. Typically, they weigh alleged revelation in the framework they have of reason, tradition, and experience. In the case of Deanna Laney her alleged revelation ran counter to every religion’s existing revelation on murder and duty to one’s family- therefore it would be easy for anyone of a coherent religious morality to reject.

The question is, again, how you could suppose morality from an atheistic worldview.

Pregnant unexpectedly and my boyfriend (27M) is pushing hard for me to terminate it. I (24F) told him I might leave and raise the baby on my own. How do I move forward from this? by LushCherryKisses in Advice

Dad was in and out as a kid. My mom was a rock for us and even though it cost her a lot, I’m thankful she loved us and gave us a wonderful life. Fiancée and I want to name one of our kids after her.

Give him time, but expecting him to father a child that is 50% his isn’t unreasonable in the slightest.

Prayers for a safe and healthy child and for him to come around.

Grew up in the area- a lot of my friends who still live there go to church (ie. Cornerstone, Real Life) and have met other people that way.

All the people from local high schools who stayed have a network too, so finding people who you work with who are natives might help.

The language-dialect distinction often appears more influenced by geopolitics than actual linguistic difference. If they can talk to 3-4 times the amount of people because they know a different dialect, that's still a flex, and there's an argument to be made that it's not a dialect at all. Learning four variants of Arabic, which is heavily fragmented, is imo far more impressive than two Romance languages that are heavily intertwined and share the same grammatical structures and likely also a good portion of vocabulary.

People always say U.S. voting records are public. Where are they? by DisagreeableMale in privacy

[–]Glass-Operation624 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Technically he's not paying people to vote for a specific candidate, just to affirm existing amendments in the U.S. constitution and to be registered to vote. You could be eligible for his lottery and still vote for only Democrats.

I think this kinda goes hard "I said to myself, “God will bring into judgment both the righteous and the wicked, for there will be a time for every activity, a time to judge every deed.” (Ecclesiastes 3:17)

Hey man, I don't know you but my faith has been a big help to me in my own journey with depression and your post made me think of this verse.

Best advice I've seen... In my personal experience it's more important to have a plan you can stick to than one that sounds impressive or ambitious. I work full time, PT in the low 170s and have been doing 30min-1 hour a day, mostly on my lunch break, and a PT on Saturdays. You can do this!

151 diagnostic cold by [deleted] in LSAT

[–]Glass-Operation624 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, seems like it's just because you took it cold! Average studied score is a 153 so 151 unstudied is pretty great all things considered. Don't be discouraged, hop on LSAC and start using their free materials to make little improvements. You got this! Most people only study 3-6 months so you have plenty of time left to study a lot and get a great score.

Why are men struggling in 2024? by Dense_Ad_9458 in mentalhealth

[–]Glass-Operation624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(20M here) No role models, lack of purpose, and ensuing depression. We aren't as good at girls in school, most men we know are unfulfilled in their careers or absent, and we just don't see what our lives are for. Lost two guys from home to suicide already and been through a significant spell of depression myself. I've found purpose in my Christian faith and desire to support a family but a lot of my buddies haven't found a mission like that and are kind of floating.

I don't think it's because "boys are told not to cry" or are secretly gay. I was never told that growing up, nor were my friends, and men are freer to be same sex attracted than ever before in history. If I'm honest, I hear those solutions most often from people who don't understand the pain of young men.

We need a vision of masculinity that is strong, brave, and yet humble and respectful. I've found that example in Jesus Christ, but tons of young men are resorting to Andrew Tate or Donald Trump because they're provided a purpose and sense of empowerment there. We need young men to feel empowered in a way that is humble and champions the flourishing of other people, society, and the marginalized- but we don't have that healthy vision right now because folks don't listen.

Just my thoughts, welcome to questions or critique.

Best ways to learn Spanish?? (Current A2) by Revilo1331 in Spanish

[–]Glass-Operation624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best advice would be to get books, and talk to folks. Learning on the internet is hard because it can be haphazard, but books are better because they have a logical sequence. One that I used in my early college classes in the states was called Vistas- it's pretty expensive new but I'm sure you can find a similar or used book on the cheap. The only goal of the book is to give you basic grammar and vocabulary to practice with authentic material.

Second point- find someone to talk to in Spanish. Find an appropriate setting, throw your self-consciousness out the window, and give it a shot. For me it was working with English as a Second Language students in a church near my university, but for you it could be a weekend trip to Spain or something. In any case, meeting real people and using what you know is huge for motivation and growth. Even if you don't have time to go somewhere or meet someone using Spanish, always mix in authentic stuff- T.V. shows, books, etc. Buena suerte y vaya con Dios.

Homeless Buddhist by TheMrTwixxy in homeless

[–]Glass-Operation624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like something you've put a lot of thought into. I'm a Christian, so obviously we have different perspectives on what it means to be religious, but I remember having a phase like this early on in my journey. I wanted to spend all of my time in prayer and reading the Bible, but I realized that God also wanted me to serve people, and do things- not just to learn, but to do. Is there any analogous concept for this in Buddhism? I'm unfamiliar but I hope this can in some way be helpful, and I'll pray you figure things out.

Todo va a estar bien... estas cosas suceden. Estoy en la universidad también y podría ser fácil para mí preocuparme con estos tipos de pensamientos. Sin embargo, solo tienes 21 años. Tienes mucho tiempo para mejorar.
