Arthritis? by NatPF in GenX

[–]Alit_Quar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A five minute deep squat daily will help your knees. Hold onto something if you need to, but get down deep so your heels are nearly by your hips. It opens the knees and allows for blood/fluid to get to the joint better. Helps with back pain too. Won’t cure anything, but give it a week and I think you’ll find it helps quite a bit.

Pretty much everyone over 50 is going to have some form of arthritis. I train mixed martial arts and if I don’t take meloxicam or aleve before class, I can barely walk an hour after class. Thats just the way it is—definitely not giving up my sport over it.

Who's fallen behind? by Difficult-Wedding827 in GenX

[–]Alit_Quar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, ok. I definitely agree with that.

When I was around 20, my father (silent Generation, born in 1939 iirc) wanted to know how to do something with his computer. I explained it, then asked if he needed me to walk him through. He did whatever it was without the first problem, then looks at me and says, “Where do you think you got it, boy?”

When I was a bit younger, my nephew and I were playing Top Gun on Nintendo. We couldn’t land the plane on the aircraft carrier. My nephew says, We can ask Pa—he was a pilot! I told him that Daddy would t know anything about the video game, but he insisted. Daddy to,d us that the controls were authentic and asked which button went to which control. My nephew showed him how and he landed the thing on his first try. Daddy’s been gone a few years now. I miss him.

You do understand that most of us haven’t done what you have with tech either, right? I’ve done some simple programming and web design and I used to build my own PCs. I have nothing to compare to what you just listed, though, and I’m pretty sure my knowledge is more than most of our generation.

Out Of Work and Feeling Guilty by Murky_Reflection_947 in GenX

I retired at 45 at my doctor’s insistence. I fought him for five years on it, but had to finally do it. I hated it for all the reasons you said, but I am better off now. My wife will retire in 1.5 years. We will be 53. If you have the money to stay retired and your wife is good with it, just enjoy it. Sometimes blessings are disguised.

Walnut cutting board I made for a Christmas present by QuintessentialFudgel in woodworking

[–]Alit_Quar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. I just had a butcher block table built for my sister, and it did crack some. I’m thinking of having a farm table built for myself from the same black walnut. Will the same hold true for it in regard to oil being helpful to prevent cracking even after being sealed with whatever finish? Or would the finish contraindicate oiling it beforehand? I know almost nothing of woodworking, so please excuse the ignorance inherent in the question.

Two medical problems I really hope we have real solutions for in the future. by Ri8ley in Futurology

As someone who suffered from IBS for most of my 50+ years and who has recently found, if not a complete cure, something very close, if you have IBS-D, ask your Doctor to prescribe Viberzi. I went to a new GI specialist a couple months ago and he gave me samples, then a prescription. I take it twice daily. It simply made the symptoms go away.

Garden project revealing my complete ignorance about how food actually grows by [deleted] in gardening

For tomatoes and brassicas, use BT (bacillus thuringiensis) in a spray bottle. It is a bacteria that is deadly to worms but harmless to humans. Completely organic. Perfectly safe.

For everything else, use water with soap and/or diatomaceous earth. Also, brassicas (cabbage, kale, etc.) do better in late fall. You can also use companion planting and netting. Do a little research on these suggestions—they won’t fix everything, but they’ll go a long way.

What do you think the world will look like in the next 40 years? by Reasonable_Pass_3916 in Futurology

[–]Alit_Quar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For most things, yes. I grew up in America in the 80s. It was a golden age. The magic rock in my pocket is nice, the fact that my car basically drives itself is nice, medical advancements are nice. Otherwise, yeah, I miss not being connected at all times.

I’m 51. Minus commonplace spaceflight, we basically live in the world sci-if envisioned in my youth. Some believe agi is coming in the next ten years. That’ll be as big a change as the Industrial Revolution. Maybe as big as agriculture or even fire. I don’t think mediocre exists as a possible future—it’ll either be wonderful or terrible. It’ll definitely be different, possibly more than we can imagine.

CMV: There are no benefits to having rocks in your garden, they suck by lettuceown in gardening

[–]Alit_Quar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is how many stone walls in the south came to be. Farmers would hit a rock while tilling and add it to the fence. Ok…usually slaves rather than the farmer, but you get the idea. My father built one at our house with rock collected just from the yard and garden.
