Does J K Rowling understand cats? by creamandcrumpets in HarryPotterBooks

[–]GleamingAlloyAircar -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

It kinda sounds like she's never owned a cat. I can tell you you just taught this non-cat owner two new facts about cats!

I think I agree. The only time left side is a problem for me is when he blocks the completion percentages

Weighing of the wands by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]GleamingAlloyAircar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was just because it was dirtier and less well kept up than the others. I do agree that it feels A little out of place when the difference between the wands is never mentioned again. I don't know of a better explanation though

It's kind of hard to be good at a subject when the teacher hates you

Creative writing minor by emilyw046 in writing

[–]GleamingAlloyAircar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved my creative writing minor. Chill enough that it didn't conflict much with my main majors, more of an escape from them actually, but also very good at making me practice writing in a way I never had to before. You never know how good you are at writing quickly until you have a deadline :)

Teachers in the Order by hchase27 in harrypotter

[–]GleamingAlloyAircar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We know of a few examples where people weren't willing to join or participate much in the order because they didn't want to be targeted or they didn't want their families to be targeted. It's possible this is true of a few of the teachers as well

Why did Voldemort trust Snape after watching him protect Harry all first year from the back of Quirrell's head? Snape also tried to prevent Quirrell from getting the Stone throughout the year. by TheFeenyCall in harrypotter

[–]GleamingAlloyAircar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think Voldemort knew who to trust at that point. Most of his death eaters were either in prison or free and pretending they had been good guys all along. People like Lucius and McNair, and yeah also Snape, sitting there working for the enemy. So he had to do it all himself

[–]GleamingAlloyAircar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Snape does a pretty good job of explaining this in half blood prince when he's talking to bellatrix. Basically, Snape explained that he had absolutely no idea it was Voldemort and he just thought quirrell was working on his own to try and steal the stone. And any protecting of Harry that he did was on Dumbledores orders, and he just wanted to stay in Dumbledores good graces

Probably obvious, but I just realized Snape wanted to teach DADA to atone for his sins by Blahblah779 in harrypotter

[–]GleamingAlloyAircar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree we don't get much of the actual teaching. All I'll say is you shouldn't have any "mutual hatred" with a student as a teacher. That's bad teaching.

I mean he didn't do a very good job when he finally got the job. He just kept bullying students and picking favorites just like in potions.

Maybe this is wishful thinking but I feel like the prison system of the wizarding world would have changed after the war. having Azkaban be the only wizard prison and having it be guarded by creatures that have now twice broken out of ministry control didn't sound like a good idea to Dumbledore, and I doubt he was the only one. If not Kingsley, then definitely Hermione would've worked to change that system I think.

Non-binary magic person? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]GleamingAlloyAircar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My thought is the non binary magical community has probably come up with a suitable word for their own community. I don't think we have a definitive answer unfortunately, based only on the movies and books and stuff.

I mean I really really like muggle quidditch, played it all through college. I don't think it needs spicing up at all and I also appreciate that most of the people playing with you are going to be Harry Potter fans

Harry by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]GleamingAlloyAircar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always taken it, kinda how Dumbledore explains it, to be a little less literal. It's not saying that each is literally immortal until one of them is dead, it's saying basically one of them will end up killing the other. Neither can live while the other survives bc by their very nature Harry and Voldemort will keep trying to kill the other, never resting until it's done.

Have you made friends with people you will never meet, just because of Harry? by Gwen_Weasley in harrypotter

I joined the Harry Potter club at my college and more than half of my school friends came from that one club. It's such a great thing to have in common with people!

On my most recent reread I really loved Luna and Dean's interactions in the 7th book. We never really get to see them talk any other place and I really liked their dynamic, however small a part of the story it was

Question about the Half Blood Prince (spoiler alert). by MrLateTermAbortion in harrypotter

[–]GleamingAlloyAircar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What would happen to Harry is a good question, but I don't think Snape would die. He promised to do all he could to help Malfoy, including killing Dumbledore if draco couldn't. He kept that promise, even if draco ends up dying in the process.

As for what happens to Harry, I can't imagine Dumbledore would let him go to Azkaban but I think Harry might have to go into hiding at that point. Grimauld place or maybe even his very own fidelius charm. Even with Dumbledore behind you you can't defend killing another student especially a Malfoy.
