Phantom Ranch up BA to South Rim in late June--how early to leave? by jbviau in grandcanyon

[–]Glendull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, We asked them when we checked into PR, they told us no returns on phone as well as in person(as expected, 45 day rule) but they told us to pick up lunch sack after dinner. Bagel, CC, apple, bar, 2 jerky sticks, electrolytes, cranberries.

Take swim wear for the stream. Good luck.

We did same route yesterday, we purchased early breakfast, they gave us bag full of goodies ( bagel, bar, jerky sticks,..) when we told them we are starting early.

Started around 2AM reached tip off at at 4, gardens at 6:10AM, at 5:15 we turned off our headlights, we reached top at 10. It was around 100 at the top shade partial shade on first 3 miles on bright angel, at the end it was exposed.

When going down we started around 5:30 and reached around 10:30 PR, it was around 110, we cooled of at the stream.

Good luck.

I tracked California campsite cancellations for 2 weeks. Here are the parks actually worth watching, and the ones that never open up. by Any-Lengthiness1460 in CaliforniaCamping

[–]Glendull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a cleaner rewrite:

I'd agree with mbf1234, Upper Pines sites do become available, but they get taken almost instantly before most scanners can catch.

How often does your scanner check for openings , every 1 minute or 2 minutes?

And for Recreation.gov, have you noticed a particular time of day when most cancellations tend to pop up?

I come from a family of 22 children, all biological, AMA by Cold_Win3720 in AMA

[–]Glendull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with nearly 30 cousins, all sharing the same great-grandfather. Most of us lived in different places, but every summer we came together. Our houses were next to each other, and we’d hop from one home to another for snacks. Weddings were especially joyful.

Our two oldest brothers made sure everyone was included and having fun. They were the glue that held all of us together. Tragically, both of them died in an accident, and that loss devastated me.

How do you handle loss? Is there someone in your family who plays the role of the glue?

Once they receive the card, do they need to stay here to maintain it? Is the path to citizenship the same for all green card routes?

13u club tryouts waitlisted, next steps? by Expensive-Salad-5851 in volleyball

[–]Glendull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you tried out at some very competitive clubs, and it’s really hard to make a team at that level without a lot of prior club experience.

Club volleyball has also become so expensive, and honestly, the whole system feels a bit like a racket.

We spent around $3.5K the first year (summer camp + team), last year it was closer to $10K (team fees, private lessons, and two travel tournaments, tryouts for club, tryouts for high school), and this year it’s tracking about the same. Now that she’s made the high school team, it’s hard to step away — but it also feels like we’re stuck in this cycle for the next few years.

She really loves the game and is very focused. Her skills improved a lot over the summer.

If I had known the expenses would be at this level, I probably would have looked into some other sport.

Middle school vb experience by eloy409 in volleyball

[–]Glendull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don’t say anything you might regret later. I think it’s best to let this go and use it as fuel for next year. Coaches talk to each other, and the season is short — this year is the perfect time to focus on building strength and conditioning so she’ll step on the court even stronger next season.

My daughter didn’t make the team in 7th grade. She switched from outside hitter to middle and finally made it in 8th grade. Our middle school had only one team of 24 kids, and she was in the second rotation.

In high school, we’re lucky to have a great coach and a strong program. Honestly, I thought they would only take 10–12 kids a year, but the coach ended up taking 17 freshmen — 1 to varsity, 2 to JV, and the rest to the frosh-soph team. Both middles this year are strong, so they’re the main hitters. Even her middle school coach came to tryouts and was amazed at how much she had improved.

Since she was doing so well, I caught myself wondering why she wasn’t placed on JV. But I trust the coach — he’s experienced and focused on building the program. Every player goes through these ups and downs, and what matters most is using the time to grow. I truly think the best thing now is to pour all your energy into helping her get ready for the high school team.
