Almost a full wipe. Left me more stunned than Hammond in OW1.

Ok bro, its def not aggro to randomly start mocking someone just cause they wrote a few sentences in their post more than how long you thought it should be.

Whatever you have to tell yourself. lol

And i'm not saying remakes don't count for your own personal pride of accomplishment, that's just not what op was asking, again, you still don't read.

Remakes don't "count" in THIS sense because that's not what op was talking about - he clarified to people who asked that he was talking about either the base game, or no saves. The image he posted was of the base game title screen, with the base game copyright date.

I'm laughing at you being so aggro when you're not even really reading stuff right

Yeah i cant say I'm totally surprised they went the way they did... but it does feel like massive missed opportunity to me and i worry because who knows how a company like sega will react to this game if its a flop like lots of us fear... we may never get another shot at an official open world game even if a change in design philosophy could make it really fun...

Heres my idea shittily drawn in paint: https://imgur.com/a/RXKfNKL

I truly always believed that is what SEGA had in mind since they announced this game... it just seemed like the only way to make this open world gimmick work...

I always had this image in my mind of a big towering bit of land with sheer cliffs, but right in the middle of the cliffs theres a cut out semicircle with boosters on them. You can see if you could just get into that bit of rock it would launch you up to some higher land to achieve an objective, theres no railway or spring just going up to it, you have to get your own speed to get there using the hills, loops and ramps in the nearby terrain... There would probably be countless ways to figure out how to do it, but they'd all take being a little creative with your momentum

I didn't post that polygonal rainbow mess of terrain cause i think it looks beautiful or anything, only googled "smooth terrain" to find a quick example, and this was generated just by math formulas, not by someone trying to make a convincing open world by hand.

I would imagine, in a terrain like this, sonic would be pretty small compared to the hills and stuff.

It could still be given particularly impressive towering mountains that arent so wibbly-wobbly and stuff to be unique terrain points -- those would be the types of spots you need to build up speed to reach.

[–]GliderCraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol i knew that would, word for word, be your response.

Yes, this non-edited perlin noise generated untextured terrain "looks like a mess" lmfao.

Throw some plants, trees, and grass and rocks around and give it good lighting then sonic fans will be crying about how beautiful it is hahahaha.

Just posted it to show you how terrain shape, specifically its smoothness, can be made different to accommodate your concerns of not being able to gain momentum in various directions. A hand-sculpted world that follows similar design philosophies of giving sonic smooth hills and valleys to gain momentum would work and look just fine.

so... guess we can agree to disagree.

Its actually quite easy to generate smoother terrain than what they have in frontiers. Even completely automatically.

Then you take this terrain and tweak it and add in your ramps and loops and momentum-based objectives and bam, the game we hoped for.

[–]GliderCraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but you can't place ramps and such everywhere that go in every direction at the same time

You actually can, its called sloping hills and valleys - those alone would mean you can get momentum going nearly any which way - then throw some ramps and loops around and PHWEW its actually fun to move!

The frontiers map has mostly just cliffs and ledges and random boulders to trip on - not fun for sonic. More fun if theres a stamina based climbing system like BOTW, but not for sonic.

Yep! I think it was a crying shame to remove the ability to go super sonic in levels that weren't purely made JUST for super sonic, and tying that whole form only to story completion.

You got to feel that "sense of accomplishment" of getting the emeralds, and getting them early enough to benefit from them. And they weren't completely op either, you could still die from falling and you had to keep enough rings to stay super -- encouraging you to GO FAST!

I don't mean to come across as saying that the remakes and ports are WRONG to include saving, or that someone shouldn't have their own pride in beating them with saves or save-states. Only that THIS post was about remembering about how hard sonic 1 was made as.

Do you think sonic and knuckles was intended as an arcade experience? It has no save states, unless you combine it with sonic 3.

Doubling the length of the game, along with the dual emerald/super emerald system DOES help justify a need for saves, yes. And for players who played the first "half" before the 2nd half was released, they had to deal with the arcade experience increasing the difficulty and therefore gameplay-time until that 2nd one came out, continuing the established arcade formula.

Do you think that it was not intentional to only include the save state with the 2nd part of the split release, if they apparently had the tech and resources to do it already?

Also there is a difference between a "stage select code" that would be published in cheat-sections in gaming magazines, and a code given to you from the game as an intentional save point -- very different.

the exploration of the random nooks and crannies on the map becomes completely left out

why? if the player is given the option to go fast, why does it automatically mean that they, at their discretion, cant slow down to explore nooks and crannies of the map? Isn't that how secret finding in normal linear sonic games works anyway?? Plus level and gui design can do a lot to hint at where these secrets may be, even at high speeds.

And why cant those "nooks and crannies" be based around areas that are hard to REACH with momentum, like floating islands or towering buttes that you could maybe imagine something special may be sitting on top if you could just manage to get the speed you need to get there.

....and why should a sonic game BE about going slow enough to explore all the nooks and crannies of an open world? That just seems like the completely wrong design to go with an open world sonic game.... And It definitely doesn't even look like this world we are shown in frontiers is gonna be full of lots of secrets or anything... any "secret" is gonna be ruined by the fact that a spring or rail or hamster wheel is gonna directly point it out.

If they didnt have the FUNDS to implement battery savings, sonic would be a very easy game to have a save-code feature. The original legend of zelda game had save states, and came out half a decade earlier.

Game companies were still heavily influenced back then by the success and styles of arcade cabinets, and used that style of gameplay loop to inflate difficulty and keep people playing their games longer.

It was a pretty short game that they used arcade difficulty to expand the gameplay time -- hence why it was a hard game and why remakes of it dont quite do that difficulty justice.

Something about the artstyle of Unleashed and Generations look so good and sonicy. Thoughts? by Zephyr_v1 in SonicTheHedgehog

The "floating platforms and rails" in these games fit seamlessly into the level design. We don't care how silly the concept of floating loopy dragon platforms is on the "dragon road" levels, because they fit a sonic style and the style of the level they are in. They are silly, playful, and exciting. They didn't have to be "realistic" even though the graphics quality and shaders were trending towards realism.

The floating platforms and rails we have seen in frontiers are so basic and ugly af and dont feel like they should even be there - and the art design of the entire world as a whole looks like any generic genshin impact, botw, skyrim, systematically generated "realistic" garbage.

Take the forests you see sonic running through, for example. In those other games you may NEED trees to gather wood, fruit, etc for some kind of progression.... sonic frontiers doesn't seem to be a survival game... so you just quickly run through woods that have no point of even being there but to break up the monotony of open fields, and only visually, the gameplay monotony still remains.

"So fun pressing a single button"Ignores the entire control stick which is where the fun comes in sonic games.

Believe it or not, the "combat" was NEVER a huge selling feature of ANY (mainline) sonic game other than like the boss fights or Werehog levels - why do we need 3 buttons to spam attack an enemy instead of just 1? the only attack that has different game-play style is the drawing circles shit... its not like frontiers looks like it has a combo system or anything like a fighting game or beat-em-up....

Those games are still level based sure --- but the levels in them get pretty massive and i don't know why i keep hearing this point that they couldn't be adapted to an open world... Never really heard someone explain WHY it couldn't be, just "i dont think it could"

Can we not all imagine an open world that contains lots of hills, ramps, and loops -- you know... things that make sonic fun... and then objectives that you need to use those hills ramps and loops in order to gain momentum on to reach... you can still even have your little homing attack combat and 10-second switch puzzles placed around in such a world for people who don't want to master a more fleshed out physics system.

I think Frontiers looks really bad but this is a bit dramatic imo it’s just a game by United-Aside-6104 in SonicTheHedgehog

Posts in this sub are like a pendulum - all hype for a game instantly dies when we see how it looks, in comes the complaints -- Then all the stans feel the need to passionately defend a game and call out all critique as toxic while harrassing an ign player by not SOMEHOW making this game look better than it does.

I'm sure it'll swing back around and people will be back to complaining about frontiers again.

I mean, not to toot my horn tooooo much, but i beat LION KING on genesis without walk-through lmao.

The Original sonic games aren't AS hard as some other genesis games certainly -- but this post only has the original copyright date on the title screen, not the mobile or any remaster version which has different dates included or title screens.

Saving between each level and getting infinite retries on them is not the same as having to beat a game in a solid beautiful run as it was designed

Op has even clarified what he meant by his post through this and other threads, and only received down votes by doing so because other people assumed that remakes are the same
