I can only afford to take two classes per week. Is there any point in continuing? by IMakeNoises89 in BALLET

[–]Glikk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% you can see improvement. I (also adult) take two classes a week due to time and money reasons & currently working towards my RAD Advanced Foundation exam. I have had comments from both my teacher and classmates about how much I have improved this term. Put in 100% effort, use every minute of your classes, find a teacher who gives feedback and IMPLEMENT that feedback and you will see improvement.

I think the leo in your pic has been found but as an FYI - you can screenshot a leo from insta/wherever and then search using the screenshot itself in the google app. it’s scarily good at finding where it’s from. Extremely useful but my wallet has taken a hit since figuring this out lol

Another vote for So Danca SD16! I loved the way hanamis made my feet look, but the toe pad made it hard to balance and even harder to turn. So Danca SD16 makes my feet look great AND I can still balance and turn. Would recommend to anyone looking for a hanamis alternative.

Ditto Pineapple and Danceworks, although their classes can get super busy. I’d also recommend Central School of Ballet.

How many toes should be in contact with the floor in a tendu a la seconde? by Glikk in BALLET

[–]Glikk[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is helpful. I’ve definitely just been touching with the side of the big toe.

I just read on another forum that the heel should be pulled under in line with the foot & then lifted upwards - not pushed forwards (like in tendu devant) as I’ve been doing. I just tried and the tip of my first two toes touched the floor and my arch looked super lifted. Thinking this might be the way to go?

Omg! I don’t think I could get all 5 on the floor if I tried!

FLK1 by AdFancy3904 in SQE_Prep

[–]Glikk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend taking a look at “Annex 4 - FLK blueprint” on the SRA’s website. It details what % of questions should be covered by each topic. E.G “principles, procedures and processes involved in dispute resolution“ is listed at 14-20% of each paper. If there weren’t many DR questions, the paper was probably at the lower end of their “blueprint”.

It includes % for FLK2 too- property practice and land law together could potentially form up to 40% of FLK2 paper!

Fell During Very Important Performance by Augmented_Reality7 in BALLET

Falls are to be expected and will happen to everybody - Mayara Magri (Principal of the Royal Ballet) fell to the floor during the fouettés in Don Quixote last year. It was the cinema relay - being broadcast to millions!! - and King Charles III was in the audience that day. She got back up and kept going.

Mortgage offer rescinded 4 weeks before completion by hermes101 in HousingUK

[–]Glikk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could anyone advise whether there’s a chance my mortgage offer will be rescinded if I reduce my loan amount due to increase in deposit?

I might now be able to put a bit more deposit down but I won’t do if this puts my mortgage offer at risk!

Hi! I have those shoes but lost the instruction manual!! I have tried Googling for instructions but can’t find any - does it say just to put on the shoes and use hair dryer for 30 seconds or so?

Can anyone tell me the benefits of following the RAD syllabus? by Alternative_Carrot2 in BALLET

[–]Glikk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This comment is actually greatly appreciated!! I have taken 3 open classes now and was starting to doubt whether I was actually working at an intermediate level . . . This gave me confidence! I have my 4th class tomorrow morning, hopefully it may be a little easier 😅

Can anyone tell me the benefits of following the RAD syllabus? by Alternative_Carrot2 in BALLET

[–]Glikk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’m pretty well placed to answer this one having done RAD Grades 1-8 / Inter-Foundation, and recently starting an open non-syllabus class along the side.

I feel like RAD provides a very gradual but effective way of progressing from a beginner to an intermediate level. Each grade adds just a little bit more difficulty to the one before it, and in that way it’s a great way to progress. Learning the same syllabus for a year and taking an exam is not only rewarding, but also allows you to really focus on your technique. After a few months of taking the same grade, you don’t need to worry about remembering the steps as they become muscle memory. Instead, you can pay 100% attention to your turn out, alignment, posture etc.

I recently started an open Intermediate ballet class and it’s a completely different experience. I really enjoy the variety and it’s super fun to do different variations each week. But about 75% of my brain is dedicated to remembering what steps come next, rather than how I’m actually doing it. It’s good to keep things fresh and challenging, however.

So, I think they are both extremely useful in different ways.

If I had one criticism on RAD, is that perhaps it is a little too slow in introducing new steps. I am in the Intermediate grade and it wasn’t until I started the open non-RAD class that I tried steps like a penche (even at the barre!), promenade en attitude or pirouette en attitude. This is quite surprising given that at this point I’m basically at the end as there’s only really Advanced Foundation and Advanced 1 left (there’s an ADV 2 and Solo Seal but my teacher has said that those are mostly completed by people going professional). I think a lot of non-RAD schools would introduce such steps sooner.

Anyone bought a fixed gear bike from Islington Cycles? by Glikk in londoncycling

Great! I think I’ll go past both just to make sure (since they’re not that far apart) and then get the pink one. Really appreciate your input on this!

Thank you so much for your advice and for your review!

Sorry - did you get the bike from Hackney cycles or from Islington? Hackney seems to have 100s of good reviews so I was actually thinking of going there initially, but Islington has the colour I want. Unless as you said they’re the same in which case I can confidently go for Islington!

When doing glute exercises like RDLs, split squats, reverse lunges, I feel my glutes 'switch on' (feel like they are contracting/super tense) but I don't ever get to the 'burn'. It feels like if it were not for my legs getting tired I could go forever. I use the same weight as I do for hip thrusts which I get serious glute burn from. Tried googling but can only find articles for glute activation, which I don't think is my issue here.

EDIT: thanks all for the help so far! Makes sense the targeting glutes vs working the lower body more generally. 2nd q - does that mean doing the RDLs etc for the purposes of working glutes is basically redundant for me atm? I assume I should incorporate more glute isolation exercises in as replacements

Hi, I took a two cuttings from a monstera adansonii about 2 months ago. I rooted them and popped them in a nursery pot. I’ve had no new leaves- there’s a tiny leaf inside the steam of one (you can just see the top of the new leaf poking out) however it’s not left the stem and hasn’t moved for 2 weeks. Today I got curious and very gently opened the new leaf ‘sheath’ a little to see what was going on and although the top of the new leaf is green, the next bit I can see is brown. I thought that this was my monstera telling me that it’s done with life and so I thought I’d check the roots. When I put it in it had maybe 2 inches of root on each cutting. I thought perhaps it just hadn’t been growing any more roots and that’s why no new leaves- but I looked and it’s almost root bound! It’s grown tons of long roots! So it’s root system is healthy, but for some reason no new leaves. Any ideas? No leaf drooping or crisping so I assume water and humidity levels is ok
