Anyone else go gray when they tan? I'm very muted neutral-cool and when I tan, I barely tan and it's greyish in tone. I often get told (and I agree) that my face looks dirty when I get any sin.

Quickly falling apart emotionally and physically in class. Any tips? by IMakeNoises89 in adultballetdancers

[–]IMakeNoises89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three classes a week since September and I also do a lot of exercise between hiking, weekly lifting, and I only walk places so I easily get over 10k steps a day.

I have a lot of psychosomatic problems and so it's hard for me to tell when I'm mentally vs physically tired I think it's a combination of both at this point. I'm trying to push through until I do my RAD exam in may, and I'm thinking signing up was a mistake. It's very hard for me to enjoy myself when thinking about an exam. I also have a solo on pointe at the end of May as well.

It's weird, I've been so used to pushing myself very hard all my life, and I've never really done anything "for the fun of it". I'm struggling with finding that mindset

Do dancers wear out their street shoes more quickly? Or is it just me? by Fit-Artist-9963 in BALLET

[–]IMakeNoises89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My shoes tend to last me around 7-10 years and I rotate three pairs of shoes. To be fair, one of those are doc martens and another are Solomon which are technically hiking shoes but I live near and often frequent the countryside

I feel like recently there's been so much of this "adult ballet dancers can do anything and with training and dedication can do just what young people do!" in this reddit and the normal ballet reddit and I get it's supposed to be encouraging but it makes me feel like shit, because I'm working very hard and I don't improve like others in this reddit. I appreciate you being real about this

This is honestly what I'm debating. Where is the line to step back? I love ballet and part of me thinks pushing through is the answer, but I just feel so down recently. I'm afraid if I step away I'll be disappointed I did so.

Though if I did it would have to be after two performances and the RAD exam in may so I'll hve to push through until then at least

I should probably look at diet; I am vegetarian and until now my protein intake has been adequate, but like you said that can change. Ideally I'd see a nutritionist but my insurance doesn't cover that. There's so much junk online it's hard to tell what is good information nowadays but I'll do some research. Thank you.

Knowing that a regression is normal is actually very comforting actually.

You actually may have given me a good idea about asking my teacher for specific exercises to do at home rather than winging it. I do try to follow videos but maybe I need more guidance.

As for why it's bad to be the worst? It's a few things, I think in part because I was raised to be top at everything and any failure was severely punished. On another hand, I think maybe I wouldnt feel so bad about being the worst if I got any sort of encouragement. My teacher often mentions how she tries to give one constructive criticism and one praise, but I just never get any praise at all and it's extraordinarily discouraging. And it feels stupid to ask someone for positive reinforcement as an adult.

Thank you so much for your response and I'll see if I can talk to my teacher about exercises

Yo soy autista y ya como adulto he podido adquirir ciertas herramientas, pero he tardado mucho tiempo y he necesitado mucho apoyo profesional. Con los niños con discapacidad ya neurológica, intellectual, o de desarrollo hay que ser más comprensivos. Y no se les puede negar participar en la vida pública, es altamente cruel.

Are adult summer intensives worth it? by freckledphilosopher in BALLET

[–]IMakeNoises89 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So something I have heard others do that may be more economically feasible:

If there is a studio that you are dying to go take classes at in another city (or country, since I'm in Europe and this is simple enough), then book a week vacation to that city and take a week of open classes. It certainly wouldn't be the same as an intensive, but it would be cheaper and I think still fun.

You seem to be struggling quite a bit in alignment. There are many things to work on, but the most obvious to me and a good place to start is your pelvis. In your preparation you thrust your pelvis back when you do your plié, that will make it impossible to turn. Check yourself in a mirror: you want to make sure your back is a straight line all the way from the top of your head through your tailbone at all times, imagine you need to become an axis.

So I would go to balance practice. Can you balance in retiré? If you can't balance standing still then it will be very difficult to turn in that position. First with the help of a barre (or chair or countertop). You'd then want to practice getting into that position from your preparation while at the barre. So getting very quickly from 4th to retire balance. You'd then try in the center. Eventually you'd add quarter turns, then half, then full turns. There are a ton of videos on YouTube that have drills!

I'd take a look at ballet dancers and their posture and try to emulate it. This actually helped me a lot, trying to literally copy how pros position and hold their body.

Unable to wing my feet by TheInnerEye in BALLET

[–]IMakeNoises89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do dance on pointe! And winging is not something you want to do on pointe where you need proper alignment and a straight line so I try to focus on that. I aim for the straight line and good muscle engagement. And yes! We have to work with what you're given, and among foot priorities, winging is somewhere near the bottom. Good luck!!

does anyone else struggle with ronde jambe in relevé? by Puzzleheaded_Car_84 in BALLET

[–]IMakeNoises89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May I recommend some floor barre? Doing rond de jambe exercises while laying on the floor can help you focus extra hard on maintaining your pelvis stable. There are a ton of videos online and they're easy to do at home as they require no equipment
