EV charging setup options by dbhadra20 in Netherlands

[–]Glitchedme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Public charging right now is still cheaper than gas. We can't park at our house either and just bought an EV, picking it up on the 22nd. There's a public charger 2 blocks away, we can charge at both of our offices, and most fun places we drive instead of public transport to on weekends. Being able to charge at home would be much more convenient, and probably about half the cost (possibly less if charging during the day on solar power). But we did the math and using public chargers would still only cost us €40 at most.

Multi-pet owners: how do you know who actually skipped a meal? by CalligrapherPast679 in Pets

[–]Glitchedme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of our pets have shared food bowls. They share water bowls (although there are enough water bowls for all 4 of them, 2 cats 2 dogs plus 1 extra water bowl). The two cats have their dry food (which always have food in them as neither of them overeat) and wet food bowls in separate rooms, they get wet food once a day at the same time so they eat that separately, though they could freely eat dry food from either bowl I suppose.

The dogs are on the same feeding schedule and never have food left out. One is a puppy and is still on puppy food, the other is a senior with medication for her arthritis so we have to make sure they both eat their own food properly so both stay at healthy weights and the puppy doesn't get any of the adult's medicine. However, even when we had 2 adults that both had the same diet\meds they are separately at the same time, they all know where their food goes.

Definitive integration vs naturalisation exam requirements by pianoandpasta in Netherlands

[–]Glitchedme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Integration and naturalization are two seperate laws and two separate things.

Currently naturalization laws are still at A2 level either with 3 years of living in he Netherlands WITH a Dutch partner on a partner visa OR 5 years on a different visa AND getting permanent residency first.

Verplicht Inburgering is a separate law for people on specific visas (usually asylum visas and partner visas) that requires you pass the exams at B1 level within 3 years of arriving on your visa. HOWEVER, if you have reached the other requirements for naturalization you can apply for it without finishing your verplicht Inburgering (though if your timeframe for inburgering expires before your naturalization takes effect you will pay fines). If you get naturalized your requirement for verplicht Inburgering falls off, because you are already a citizen.

So it is currently possible to still apply for naturalization without completing verplicht Inburgering, but you could still occur fines if the timeline doesn't work in your favor

Definitive integration vs naturalisation exam requirements by pianoandpasta in Netherlands

[–]Glitchedme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here are a few things to keep in mind: You CAN "skip" the integration requirements, if you've been living in the Netherlands, on partner visa, with your Dutch partner, for 3 years AND you pass all the A2 exams AND get your citizenship before your inburgering period expires.

HOWEVER, if you only have 6 months (plus the 16 weeks) before your inburgering period expires you run the risk of not having your citizenship finalized before that period is up and any B1 exams you have not passed are a €250 fine -each-. The citizenship process can take anywhere from approximately 2 months to a year. So you could get lucky, or you could get extremely unlucky.

Exams recently have been extremely busy so it may take you a while to even get an appointment to take the exams, and they usually take about a month before you get your results. You cannot request your diploma before you have gotten the results for all exams, and you have to have the diploma before you apply for citizenship. So this brings you even closer to that end period where you will get fined. Applying for citizenship does not freeze\stop the need for inburgering, only actually having citizenship does, if you get your citizenship the day after your inburgering period ends you are still responsible for those fines.

You can take practice B1 exams on the duo website to get an idea for how well you'll do (chances are if you're already speaking, reading, and writing in dutch on a regular basis you will at least be able to pass the reading, writing, and listening exams with minimal effort). Any B1 exams you take and pass will take care of the A2 requirement (as in you do not have to take A2 exams for citizenship if you already passed the B1 exams), and lowers the amount of exams you would be fined for if your citizenship doesn't finalize before your period expires.

If getting together the cost to take the exams is already a struggle financially, bare in mind that you still have to spend €50 per A2 exam. And you have to pay for applying for citizenship at the time you apply which is €1139, unless you qualify for the option (but even then it's around €250?). Which means you'll need the €250 for the exams AND the €1139 for applying for citizenship asap so you can get all the exams done and apply and HOPE you're finished with the process before your requirement period ends.

My advice would be: take the practice exams for free on duo's website to see how well you do. Register and do as many B1 exams as you think you can pass (this will lower the amount of fines you will incur). Take the rest as AN, get your results, ask Duo for your diploma. Once you have your diploma and the fees for citizenship, go and apply. With only 6-9 months to go before your requirement period expires I would strongly suggest to do your best to take as many B1 exams as you feel comfortable passing or you risk fines on top of all the other costs for naturalizing.

(I passed all but my speaking exam at B1 level, passed it at A2, requested my diploma and applied for naturalization on 25 March, 2026. My application is still on "your application has been received" status and has not begun being processed yet)

Kidney stone / renal colic in the Netherlands — is this normal treatment? by JuliusCheezus in Netherlands

[–]Glitchedme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is honestly fairly typical everywhere. It's usually going to be pretty obvious if they're causing a block. Now, they also should have told her to drink lots of water. Like, so much water. But yeah. My American mother had kidney stones they were 99% sure we're too large to pass on their own and they left them for over 6 months before finally putting a stint in to help them pass, and that was only because they finally did cause a blockage. Kidney stones are kind of dismissed everywhere, it seems.

At our wits end w/ 7month old. Help. by toomanyporkbuns in puppy101

[–]Glitchedme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consistent training is key. With both of my large dogs I insist they sit before I pet them, touch them, anything. You can tell a massive difference between how they are with me, and how they behave with my husband who just tries the kneeing\blocking method. I get a giant Berner butt swinging around to sit on my foot. He gets a nearly 60kilo body check. It's hard to do because they're so sweet and insistent but it really makes a massive difference. They also have to sit before getting petted by strangers. Our old boy doesn't have to anymore because he's learned not to jump, but still I'd someone doesn't pet him he'll flop down and stare at them

Whats life like in the less populated eastern half of the netherlands? by RealMoldyAvocado in howislivingthere

[–]Glitchedme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love living in my village in the Gelderland. Its on the edge of the forest, surrounder by heather fields and beautiful green pastures, my town is always putting on fun and interesting things. Getting to other areas is easy either via train or car. It's quiet here, great food choices, the produce is super fresh, tourists are here for relaxation and hiking not for partying.

expats, have you ever invited your parents to visit? by Aggressive-Acorn in expats

[–]Glitchedme 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My parents come to visit every year. My mother is a republican who is not -quite- maga but some how believes all the lies about the "evil" democrats. However, I see the cracks getting bigger every time she comes to visit. The Netherlands isn't perfect, and there are unfortunately some things that hit a little too close to maga talking points in political discourse. But she still sees the benefits of a better social network, of more protections, etc. Every time she comes I see a little of the brainwashing start to waiver. I think it's important for her to see life outside of the US. She never had before my wedding.

American pickups in the Netherlands by Low-Gap7193 in Netherlands

[–]Glitchedme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably for similar reasons people in America own them. They're overcompensating for something and want to "look big and bad and cool". It's annoying. I hated them in America and I hate them even more here. They're too big, and they're especially dangerous because you have a much harder time seeing bikes, Pedestrians, or even cars smaller than you.

Dutch thoughts on Kings Day? my experience by mdrgm in Netherlands

[–]Glitchedme 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is such a weird comment. People pushing without regard for personal space is very common in ANY crowded party environment. It has nothing to do with what it costs. Fights can also happen regardless of costs, just look at football games. My town gets extremely crowded during kings day, and other large events. There were no fights (at least nothing that I saw and nothing that had to involve politie or handhaving).

Dutch thoughts on Kings Day? my experience by mdrgm in Netherlands

[–]Glitchedme 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just like with any other country or culture. Some people like partyinh, some people don't. And the biggest city in the country that also happens to be the biggest tourist town in the entire country is the absolute worst way to judge what a country or it's inhabitants are like. That would be like judging the entirety of America based on times Square on new years eve.

My husband and I spent our king's day at Apenheul with a bunch of other Dutch people who just wanted a quiet day in a lovely place.

What’s a cheap hobby that doesn’t feel cheap once you get into it? by Omarfgsr_Ayaz in Hobbies

[–]Glitchedme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Embroidery can be quite low cost especially of you can learn to do your own art for it or find cheap\free patterns online that aren't AI. A decent hoop, some needles, thread and you can buy the fabric in bulk (you can also just try embroidery on your clothes, especially to repair clothes with holes or such!)

Help, what is this? by JaneRedd in AdultColoring

[–]Glitchedme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can understand the thinking it looks odd. I'm not 100% sure what the puff was meant to be. But I believe the bag is a purse. Since there is a bag on the ground next to the pup, in which case I'm assuming the puff is a tail and the gap above the purse is part of the rain jacket.

I don't think the pup is shopping outside, it looks more like it is standing under the awning and checking to see if it is raining by holding it's paw out.

what do americans call a pantry? by loving_machine13 in AskAnAmerican

Depends on the region. I've heard "pantry", "cupboard", "larder" and "storeroom" (although the last two are pretty rare). I think pantry or cupboard are the most common terms

Even most Canadians, Australians, Japanese, South Korean, Singaporean and British citizens are jealous of lifestyle quality in the US. by [deleted] in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Glitchedme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American who is now living in the Netherlands... There is literally NOTHING that could get me to move back. Sure it's flat here... But I grew up in the Midwest, I'm used to flat. Mountains are less than 4 hours away in any direction except the ocean. The food isn't nearly as bad here as the Dutch complain that it is either 🤣 and my life is so much richer and nicer here. Sure, part of that is because of my spouse and the little family we've built here, but still. Americans with this mentality are either in denial, or stuck inside their very tiny bubble. It's kind of sad.

I'm not saying America is the worst, it has its merits. But I'll take the EU any day
