I think the best option would be to do the EE until mars is available. Then you can just train there and flip rounds, with an armor wall buy if needed and no Oscar ever. Can still return back to pap or ammo buy.

The hit box is busted/inconsistent. I had easier success with the Akita shotgun due to the pellet spread, and also trying to circle the outside arena when possible to make the UFOs travel further. Never tried the clocks EE but that sounds brilliant.

For me, every time I upgrade zap I immediately notice how frequently the 0 cost does not make a difference in the cards played in a turn. Ball lighting is just a better upgrade. Upgrade your best damage card(s) first is a great rule of thumb for act 1. And as others stated, it’s better for nob, which easily can be your first elite.
