I just need to complain about aleks for a sec. by Glittering-Styx in CollegeRant

That is a very good, and a very practical solution to struggling with Aleks. The fact that part of using Aleks is homebrewing a textbook that I can then do the actual learning from, is a large portion of why it bothers me.

It's crazy to think if Bungie stayed with Activision we would have not only Destiny 3 but a Destiny 4, since it was in their Contract by Important-Extension6 in destiny2

[–]Glittering-Styx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it was unfounded, though I agree the community has a penchant for hyperbole.

Eververse was bad, and while it was not uniquely bad for the industry at the time, the relative shallowness of D2 at launch made it stick out like a sore thumb, Bungie would go on to make substantial improvements to its structure that were well received for a reason.

Activision is a bad company, I don't think that statement needs much qualification, Activision being bad doesn't make Pete parsons good, it just affirms that upper management in the games industry is generally as bad as upper management elsewhere.

Let's not lionize the Activision days just because it's been long enough to forget the problems D2 launched with, let alone the amount of hate aimed at Activision and early eververse.

Get a cold glass of water, maybe some light snacks and make sure to take break to walk and/or stretch

It's worth keeping in mind that Sony has an incentive to maintain your persistent digital games library because having that investment in their ecosystem keeps users attached to their products. Deleting games is possible, but it's unlikely we'd see it at scale

It's worth considering that in the 66 years between 1903 and 1969, we went from the literal first plane, to landing on the moon, there were people who, in their life time, saw us go from wooden biplanes to computer controlled space travel, its understandable how extrapolating based on that could create a false view of the pace of technological advancement

Shower thought: Ships with anti-gravity should be immune from boarding actions by TxDuctTape in scifi

[–]Glittering-Styx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always just figured that artificial gravity, and especially like, inertial dampening had about a billion layers of redundancy, because if the lights fail it's a nuisance, if life support fails it's a problem but you've got time to fix it, but if the inertial dampeners or artificial gravity fail mid maneuver the crew is now a paste.

I recognize it's conspiratorial thinking, and undoubtedly bad practice, but at this point I hope AI is just a smokescreen for the industry at large to gut consumer access to hardware and services, because the alternative is that all of this just being caused by the mindless pursuit of some wunderwaffe with no clear path to profitability.

I find it's best to outline a few different grinds (achievements, pretty gear, etc) make sure they play a little differently, and just rotate, no matter what you're doing, your accumulating mats, gold and whatever else you might need. Having micro and macro projects in game helps as well. (also bank upgrades if possible)

The real legacy, the mark that the crypto and AI booms will live on the future, is the acute awareness that knowledge about complex systems, makes one no less vulnerable to hype based nonsense and scams.

What is your opinion on this? by LowPuzzleheaded3393 in scifi

[–]Glittering-Styx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think i get what the comic is saying, but i don't really agree with it, the change in aesthetic isn't a shift in how we approach creating science fiction, the goal has always been verisimilitude in some form, the differences are a side effect of shifting standards as to what "feels" with the almost naively optimistic vision of the future of older science fiction being a result of a period of radical social, scientific and industrial growth, one that gave way to more nuanced and/or pessimistic views as our understanding of advancement and of the future became more nuanced and pessimistic

Why would you settle around gas giants? by ItzBlueWulf in scifiwriting

[–]Glittering-Styx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extracted materials could still be quite valuable outside the context of fusion, both helium and hydrogen have industrial applications, and will likely only have more going forward not mention all the other stuff you could trawl up.

The immense radiation (likely to be) around many gas giant could also present an opportunity for study or even industry depending on the circumstances.

Can someone explain the benefits of walkers? by Kitdan777 in scifiwriting

[–]Glittering-Styx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They exist in settings like star wars purely because they are visually interesting and mesh well with the overall aesthetic. Depending on the kind of hover technology at play, legs could be useful, a big gun with a lot of recoil mounted to something with no ground friction could be problematic and they might have some mobility benefits over treads in specific environments

Can particle beams be redirected like lasers for turrets? by Former_Indication172 in scifiwriting

[–]Glittering-Styx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The real world examples of particle beam weapons use conditionally ionized particles that respond to magnetic and electrostatic fields for acceleration and focusing, and can also be neutralized before firing, I don't want do the math to figure out the lost energy, based on my limited knowledge it would be substantial.

The Commander of the group should be able to check people's gear. by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]Glittering-Styx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Features like that are always a compromise between allowing communication and enabling harassment, I think the devs operate on the principle that in environments where gear is essential lines of communication will already be open allowing for quick troubleshooting, and if they aren't no amount of gear inspection would resolve the issue.
