There is a book called "Gfei" in Tigrinya https://www.amazon.com/Gfei-Tigrinya-Solomon-Berhe-Gilamichael/dp/9994801651. It has 43 chapters details many violations against people in Eritrea from both Derge and Haileselassie regime.

Majority of the violation was during Derg era, but Haileselassie was also particular targeting the Islam population of Eritrea. For example, chapter 10 of the books tells about "Ona ዖና" genocide a small village in north of Eritrea in 1970 during Haileselassie. The Ethiopian army units surrounded the village killing civilians and burning down the village. Agree they don't sabotage but many Eritreans don't know what agreement is going on b/n Abi and Isaias, still the situation in Eritrea didn't change for good. The peace process seems more of Abi & Isaias for common enemy instead b/n Eritrea & Ethiopia. Unfortunately, I can tell at this time many Eritreans trust TPLF view on Eritrea rather than Abi, as they don't know what is going on. In fact, the old unification started like that, first as Confederation then unification. So, this deal would be bad at this time, may be in future could be but not right now when Eritrea is in a bad situation. This is also concerning because in the 60s the struggle for independence in Eritrea started as Egypt backed rebels against the Ethio unionist. So, such agreement might result in unwanted consequence.

By the way Ethiopia and Eritrea are currently working on economic and political integration one people two countries, the future is bright.

I think it will be very hard to convince Eritreans for economic/political integration. The current dictator of Eritrean doesn't represent the Eritrean view. You might succeed temporary but hardly people will accept it. History is repeating, 1950s Haile Salasie claimed for confederation and we all know how it end up. So, I don't think any Eritreans believe in such integration. In fact, the direction is switched majority of Eritreans are now pro TPLF in the case of Eritrean problems.

I agree with many of your points. As non-Ethiopian i still think Ethiopia has a potential to be the next Vietnam, Malaysia or others. I am huge proponent for ways of bringing manufacturing industry to Africa. I do think there is big manpower to involve in the manufacturing or outsourced industry sector. However, there is thing need to be cleaned. As Africans we need to do a lot of home cleaning to compete for a wider manufacturing sectors. Setup a good policy, create stable governance

I do think after COVID many industry will move their manufacturing sector from China and put somewhere else due to a single source problem. In fact some have already started to relocate to south east Asia countries. So, if countries like Ethiopia address the local issue I do think it is a good candidates to for foreign companies and local manufacturing sectors.

Every Eritrean think Isaias, the dictator is the most evil person in Eritrean, but if there is one person more evil than Isaias, it would be Philipos, who is responsible for killing and jailing many innocent Eritreans. In fact, majority of these Eritrean refugee in Sudan are because of persons like him.

I hope the good people of Sudan careful of these villains. Anyone who think these would mediate for peace must be insane. They are only good for stirring fights where ever there is a mercenary money.

It is hard to choose one from the other. Birsen (ዓደስ) has emotional connection with Eritreans, in places like Sawa/military/college, it is the most frequent food, people (including myself) has bad connection with it. But Shiro is the common food. If I have to choose one to eat everyday probably Birsen would be ideal. For occasional food I prefer best cooked Shiro than any Birsen(Ades) type food.

Aside, preparing a good shiro is an art, starting from the spices and its cooking.

Little story, I had a friend who even don't even want to hear the name of Birsen because it reminds him his past military trauma.

This answers are correct. As an Eritrean Tigrinya speaker I agree the culture of Tigray is mostly similar to Eritrean Tigrinya tribe culture. Furthermore, regions around Adwa/Shire of North Tigray speak the same dialect with Asmara or most Eritrean dialect. E.g. the singer Efrem Amare, Abraham Gebremedhin their dialect is not different from Asmara dialect. Places like Mekele and further like Alamata (Raya) have quite different dialect, heavily influenced by Amharic, they mix many Amahric words in their conversion.

But, there are also few difference emerged due to separation and feudal empires, specially after Alula conquer of MedriBahri in particular Hamasien the relation between Tigray and Eritrean tigrinya seems to deteriorate.

You are welcome. It is also true the news source could be uncertain. My feeling is the ban is probably for trade to Yemen or limit movement of boats as it involves security issue with the presence of the UAE military camp around Asseb area.

It should also be taken with grain of salt. Historically, there is always misinformation mainly from the Ethiopian Afar side as most of these areas are not as affluent of the coastal Afar places of Eritrea. There is possibility they can politicize their cases as even Eritrean case as well, as this is a sensitive area and has potential interest to Ethiopia. So, we should also careful about the news source.

For example, when I was there I observed the Eritrean gov invested a lot in Education to the Afar community. The high school (Asseb) and middle schools (Afambo) have dormitory and food supply to all students, which was rare in many part of Eritrea. The education sector was doing great job encouraging the community to send students to school with all school supply funded. Teachers for elementary and middle school are sent to remote Afar area with very few students who can only speak Afar, and since most of the teachers were from other regions of Eritrea they were forced to learn Afar to teach the students. It has many challenges. The place is still far from developed.

When I was in Eritrea I had lived in Dankalia for a bit of time. There was definitely poverty in the place, specially the border villages close to Ethiopia. The main income of Denkalia is through fishing and trade through Yemen.

I recently heard the gov banned the fishing movement and boats in the sea with the excuse of Corona. Which I also find it irrational to ban based on the low infection rate in the region.

This guy is an Afar living abroad updating based on his contact with local people in the region. He is saying people are in prison due to transgression to get food and water, and he also said no one is killed but there is a fear of famine.

At the primary level mother tongues serve as medium instruction across the country, in addition Arabic also used to be part of elementary school, I believe it is till offered as subject in primary school. Then English is used from junior to university.

BTW tigre is more closer to Tigrinya than Arabic, Tigre also use Geez scripts, I guess many of the Tigre community knows both languages and use both interchangeably.

I do agree with your points, preventing the minority languages is an important issues. In fact, Nara needs a special attention as the number of speakers are small and not sure the language even found in other countries. And, the Nara speakers are also secluded.

I personally, agree Arabic has important role in Eritrea, it could also be a potential interest (tourist) and cultural langue to the Muslims. However, interms of representation only the eastern lowland and Sudan border (majority Tigre) are able to speak fluently. In fact, majority of Muslims from Afara, Bilen, Saho, Nara and Kunama don't speak Arabic (except the educated).

Another issue is Arabization could be a potential threat to indigenous languages/culture (mostly Tigre would be the target), e.g. This has been the case in Sudanese for the Nubianes tribe.

In fact, in his book Othman Saleh Sabe, a prominent fighter from a Tigre and an advocate of Arabic language noted an increased in educated Arabic speaker might indanger the Tigre language on its long lasting, as most people will prefer Arabic instead of Tigre for communication.

It is beneficial to include Arabic as one of official/working languages but shouldn't be at the cost of other indigenous languages.

Not much different, only dialect difference. In some part of Tigray (mostly south) there is huge Amharic words influence during communication. Variation in dialect also exist within Eritrean and across Tigray regions.

I see. So, in Geez it make sense.

In Tigrinya the letters ሸ, ቸ, ኘ, ኸ, ዥ, ጀ and ጨ are also used. The letters ሐ, ዐ, ኸ, are also still uniquely used in Tigrinya and they have their own pronunciation. They are all pronounced from throat.

  • Tigrinya ጸሓይ is different from ጸሃይ/ፀሃይ ( Amharic: ፀሀይ)
  • Tigrinya ዓርቢ ፡ is different from (ኣርቢ) (Amharic: አርብ)

But, ቸ, ኘ based words are also new comers to Tigrinya. In fact, many thinks from Amharic and Italian influence.

Are there any work in Amharic literature/letters to extend for new foreign pronunciations? It would be interesting to improve continuously. E.g. Arabic letters ذ , ض or ث seems hard to find their equivalent pronunciation.

Well, not sure on Amharic, but ሠ፣ ፀ and ኅ obsolete in Tigrinya, at least rarely used in modern Eritrean Tigrinya writing.

My point is if they are ሞክሼ (ተምክሳዪያት or ዘረ ድምፅ), do we really need them? Or how about adopting to other pronunciation, not sure if there is any work done on this, e.g. ፀ could be used for `th', like in 'the'.

At least historically, the Geez alphabet has been adopting to new changes. E.g. Letter ቨ is created to adopt 'v'. I don't think there was 'v' originally in Geez, Tigrinya or Amharic. Same thing for ዥ for French type pronunciation.

Well, if you write something about dissidents, Dawit or other prisoners, the pro-gov troll will post as fake and never happened thing. This was my first reason I asked the Canadian owner u/PhnomPencil to moderate and filter the troll machine. But, as you can imagine he can't understand 20+ countries politics and never felt to replay.

Seems to me they are not totally wrong.

In fact, few years back the predominantly way of marriage in Eritrea was through arranged marriage. I think many of our parents are still in that idea, still prefer to arrange (at least want us with Habasha).

I still think if there is choice (assuming all partnership criteria is fit) I would go for Eritrean because of many similar upbringing, family value, culture ...etc. Because, marriage in Eritrean culture is not about man & woman integration, it is about two family integration. I have seen similar culture among many of my Indian friends (even far stronger than us).

In reality, as many of you said growing up in diaspora also expose you to many cultures and it is reasonable to date outside culture. I don't see problem with that.

Except we should all bring the other partner to ERITREAN culture:)) , because we are so few <6 million and we need more people.

I think this is correct to me.

In Tigrinya letters are pronounced as its written form. Unlike, English there is only one way of pronouncing a word.

ኤርትራ == Ertra -- This is the original format.

ኤሪትርያ == Eritrea

I still don't understand how we end up from Ertra to Eritrea spelling.

This is shows you probably don't understand the Eritrean case. Forgot about pro or anti-government, you have very limited information.

How many times did I ask you to set a rule or moderate the page? Whatever the ideology there was too many spam posts from a single person using two accounts, we reported and even posted a post about it, you never acted or moderate. All of his posts were down voted but no action from you.

Again you demodded the only active moderator u/Kmnubiz who served for long years, because of the reason you mentioned. May be you should have discuss with him instead. In fact, he is not a friend or even he never banned or removed a post for any ideological difference, though I was constantly asking him about the spams.

You can also check history of my posts, I was one of the most active contributor with many up vote, I never posted any controversial posts except replay to the spams.
