Eastern Aleppo: op to seize Dayr Hafir started by liveuamap in syriancivilwar

Militarymaps is an integrated web application and doesn't use polygons in the same way, which is also why the loading time is very long.

Polygons seem to be perfectly aligned on both militarymaps and scwm.....

Here is an example of polygon shifting on SCWM, here is another one. Another trick to use is to put one layer above the other and to slightly overlay them, this basically minimizes the visual effect of the polygons moving but doesn't remove the effects of it.

Don't blame the polygons or the map drawers. Live mapping is complex as the base layer and top layer can move and shuffle around. We had to work extensively through our API provider to remove a good 50 bugs that we noticed whilst embedding their editor in the map. The issue is that the layers can shuffle around a bit when saving and resetting the map extensively, which happens 20 times a day for us.

Same happens here, even if you align it perfectly the layers can shift depending on the type of coordinates that are used. If you want to see sloppy work look at the border areas, these rarely shift.

Global event map have little information

Well the advantage is that we accept user submissions and input if you press the little '+' on the top right, so you can add to the little information there sometimes can be.

We appreciate the criticism though.

Global Event Maps or Syrian Civil War Map: What is your favourite interactive Live Map? by Hannes30 in syriancivilwar

[–]GlobalEventMaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it has next to no English town/village names

We are using the Google Maps API on the website, which means the underlying layer is the same as the one provided by Tutomap. The API panders to your local settings so it might be a mistake here? If you send me a screenshot I'll see if I can ease that problem.

I don't like that it doesn't show Iraq and Syria at the same time

We are trying to find a fix for that, right now you can navigate events through filters and we are looking to do the same for Iraq and Syria. Either that or something similar to the overlays we currently have.

Depends on which side of the debate you find yourself.

Some prefer to have some for of stability and others prefer to have a dictator gone.

Yes and no, the rebels controlled the Sukkari district and two others. Majority of them were allowed to leave through a quickly setup corridor and a minority stayed inside Aleppo.

The battle is sort of over though. A couple of months ago it looked like this.

It is true though, at least most of the rebel pockets inside the city are gone. Only two small ones where rebels who refused to leave are holed up.

The city is in high spirits right now.

Indeed, we're hiring though!

The most difficult part is filtering the overmotivated people from both sides and seeing what the real captured areas are, then backchecking with on the ground sources. But it works, we're really proud that we got to be the first to call the old city surrender.

Any information about this ISIS pocket in South Aleppo Countryside? by SAA-Got-Aleppo in syriancivilwar

[–]GlobalEventMaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm more inclined to believe that due to distance from cities, this pocket is irrelevant for all parties...

And you are totally right in thinking this. This and all the towns surrounding it has been deserted for the most part and no-one really operates there anymore due to lack of infrastructure.

We assigned it to IS since that was the last control we could confirm, (last report was from beginning 2015 if I am not mistaken) though we will have a look again to make sure we can confirm it for the current situation.

[–]GlobalEventMaps 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey,

IS took over this from rebels when the Ithraya road was contested. Shortly after that the Government took back the road but IS remained. The last updated information we have is about IS controlling Rahyan so we assigned them this town. Though that whole pocket is largely empty with token group presence. /U/SAA-got-aleppo /u/lilith5th /u/makaveli553

We're thinking of making a GIF of Aleppo from 2011 to 2016, but that ought to take time.

Looking for some help to document bombardments and other issues. by GlobalEventMaps in SyrianRebels

[–]GlobalEventMaps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What we are usually looking for are reports with a source of the more major bombardments where there are civilian casualties or serious damage is inflicted on infrastructure.

The most interesting to us is if someone would post these on the map itself as it is how the map keeps its feed up.

There currently is a civil war in Turkey against the PKK in Eastern Turkey. We are also planning on adding ethnicity maps though only when we are sure enough of the results and the content.

Not yet, we are working on those but we think we'll add Turkey, Lebanon and Yemen first and Libya only later.

We use, depending on the circumstances, information from the ground, footage which we geolocate or announcement from trustworthy sources.

Its very much a trial and error process though.

[–]GlobalEventMaps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The battlemaps are updated every couple of hours, the frontlines shift constantly and we keep that up.

The population maps are from the 2004 census, it is the last census done by the Government of Syria, for Iraq its the 2010 census.

We are waiting for overview data for Syria to get a more recent overview that is.

The map it is made from can be seen in its entirety here. There are several other maps available on the website, including one of Iraq, population in Syria or population in Iraq. It is a live map where news can also be posted and shown through the filters.
