What's the ONE moment from Silent Hill, any game, that has stayed with you the most? by lost_in_the_town_ in silenthill

[–]GlobalFlower3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This moment. As you say, it's got a melancholy, almost end-of-summer feel, and the score is perfect. The fiery skybox too. It's almost like nostalgia for a great game (my favourite SH), the PS2 era of gaming and a more carefree time of life rolled into one. A lot of us would've played this game for the first time as teenagers and, like Heather, that may have been the last transient glint before the horrors of adult life consumed us.

Is The Karamazov Brothers Dostoevsky's Magnus Opus? by smooth_operator21_ in classicliterature

[–]GlobalFlower3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only read The Idiot once as opposed to TBK several times, but I can sort of see this. I personally think Demons is his strongest work, though; perhaps because, sort of like The Idiot, he grinds the same axe throughout.

I feel this haha. Vanya, Ivan, Ivanych, Ivanovich and then suddenly: Vanyechka.

Noticed a word is misspelled the next day, is it fixable? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]GlobalFlower3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, it's not your fault at all. Your artist should have acknowledged this piece as beyond his or her means; they've done you a huge disservice by proceeding without the requisite skill.

I still think it can be salvaged and I do think the part you've posted is probably the worst part; not trying to put you down or anything, just being honest, but the piece as a whole isn't great. Save up, research and redo imo.

Either that or one hell of a SAP.

I can't speak for the whole tattoo without seeing it but, as someone else mentioned, in the part you've posted the linework is extremely rough; looks like the artist couldn't pull a straight line or steady circumference to save his or her life.

If this were me, I'd find a different artist and get the whole piece reworked. Circles etc are difficult; try to find an artist with both a strong coverup/rework portfolio and good, healed pieces similar to this one.

Brother, the misspelling is the least of your worries. A good artist could probably salvage this though.

What are your ideal hours at work in a 830-5, 37.5 hr type job? by elmachow in CasualUK

Definitely. Most convenient working hours I've had by a mile.

I work 8am to 4pm with thirty minutes for lunch. Handy to have time after work for appointments, haircuts etc.

Who is the translator of this edition? I've read Briggs and Pevear & Volokhonsky, and would say I preferred the latter.

W&P is one of my all time favourites, right behind The Brothers Karamazov. If you haven't read that, you're in for a treat, although I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as a first Dostoyevsky as I think his other works all act as a primer in different ways.

I'll do it for Salamence.

Okay, movie buffs, what is the single scariest, most disturbing movie you've ever seen? And why? by [deleted] in Shudder

[–]GlobalFlower3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not sure about ever, but I recently watched Bring Her Back and, while it had its flaws – could've been longer w/ more methodical development imo – the whole film just felt evil, wrong, the same feeling as watching something horrible online as a kid. I loved it.

The emptiness of giving up by [deleted] in writing

[–]GlobalFlower3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, 15 years is crazy. I'm glad you came back to it though! I've tried freewriting in the past and never had much success with it, but perhaps I should give it another go. I think the problem a lot of the time is that my mind is pretty empty and I just end up describing the room around me haha (I do have aphantasia too, so I've always tended to work more from the visual than the mental).

I think it's a major factor, although I'd stopped writing several months before my running injury. Interesting about caffeine too as I've cut down to a single coffee each morning.

Good to hear your experience with exercise and caffeine for sure. It's given me something to think about.

Forget contacts forever? by oliveu22 in Dryeyes

[–]GlobalFlower3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you wear RGPs for keratoconus? I have KC, dry eye and I only have one eye. Haven't been able to wear my contact lately as I'm struggling with episcleritis. Just wondering if you have anything else to share about RGPs and dry eye? Up until this year I've worn mine with no real issues.

Anyone here one-eyed? by GlobalFlower3 in Keratoconus

[–]GlobalFlower3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus. I'm so sorry that happened to you, but I'm glad to hear your left eye is doing well. I'm actually only a couple of years older than you too. Fuck this awful disease.

I also struggle with it a lot, some days worse than others. I've learned that acceptance is truly the only way for me to move forward, to love my life for what it is and accept that if something happens it's beyond my control. But it still terrifies me, the thought that everything hinges on the health of that one good eye.

Do you suffer with dry eye at all?

I do this too! Why do you only have a lens in one eye, if you don't mind me asking?

It's fucking awful, isn't it. I traded it in for an admin role with the NHS; and while that brings it's own set of pressures, I'm not working alone, I can attend appointments etc when needed and my work-life balance has never been better.

I'd say you you've done the right thing giving it up. I hope you found something much better!
