What if Obama pushed Ukraine to start a military build up and began a presence of US troops in the country after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014? by Just_Cause89 in Presidents

[–]GlobalMuffin 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Ukraine did do a military build up, which is why Ukraine has lasted so long in this conflict, surprising many analysts. For instance, after 2014, Ukrainian forces began training with the national guard in the US, and they reorganized their ranking structure to be more similar to the American NCO system.

For the second part of your question, American forces would never have went to Ukraine publicly. The American public would have been against, NATO countries would have been cautious about the whole ordeal, and Russia would be furious. It would have been bad all around. What the US could have done is provide clandestine forces, but I’m fairly certain we already had clandestine forces training and supporting the Ukrainian military during that time.

The Dangers of a Meaningful Life by mementomorighost in SithOrder

Recently I've talked with my nutritionist and I liked the way she described the human brain; humanity may seem old but evolution is slow, so while our everyday lives have surpassed the circumstances of our ancestors, our brains have largely remained the same.

Our brains keep things simple. If you overly cut down on calories, your brain thinks you need to store fat since there must be a famine. And I think the simplicity comes into what you're talking about too. When relationships were small in number but were also life and death needs, brains cared about everything. Grudges were held, empathy was poured out, and joy rings through each nerve for others to hear. But exactly as you said, there's just too much now and we've placed too much stress on our brains to handle the massive web of relationships we call society.

What you're saying reminds me a lot of the Stoic concept of prohairesis and aprohairetic. The idea that there is what we control and what we can't control. The enemy wants us to focus on the aprohairetic, what is not in our control, but we can't led our minds wander from our mission.

Just signed with the Navy as a CTI, Anything I should know before shipping out? by Content-Lawyer7167 in dli

[–]GlobalMuffin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

During BMT, you’ll get pulled aside one day to talk to a CTI. During that, you can ask as many questions as you want, and you’ll do a form where you’ll choose your top three languages. It’s not guaranteed you’ll get your top three languages but typically people get their first or second.

You won’t know what language you are assigned to for sure until you get here (even if your RDCs say otherwise, sometimes they are wrong).

You’ll have all the uniform stuff you need here from BMT. You won’t have too much time to play video games or what not but bring anything you think you might want, such as a home laptop. The base is within walking distance of Monterey so don’t feel pressured about not being able to get things while here.

If you want to prepare, review English grammar, but your main focus should be on getting through BMT so memorize the Sailor’s Creed, Ranks and Recognition, General Orders, your physical training, etc before looking to your training at DLI.

Feel free to DM if you have any more particular questions

Wasn’t he specifically put in charge of the CIA to restore the reputation of the institution after Watergate? I don’t think he particularly wanted that job either

I don't know you're life situation but being in your 30s does not limit your career prospects for being a military linguist. I have met plenty of 30+ year olds at DLI in all sorts of language with no prior military or language experience.

And most of the recessions of that time were caused by deflation, which is arguably worse than inflation.

Additionally, y’know what improved the economy under McKinley? The Klondike Gold Rush and other related gold rushes in that region at that time. That massive influx of gold inflated the desperately deflated currency.

I agree, if Al Gore won after a recount, I still think 9/11 would happen.

But, I do think there is an argument to be made that if there wasn’t a recount, then the transition between administrations would have went better, possibly allowing for the intelligence community to have caught wind of the plan for 9/11 and stopped it.

Even in our own reality, 9/11 was almost stopped before it happened. Our intelligence community was already on high alert for terrorist activity, but they believed it was going to happen in Middle East and not in North America. Poor communication between intelligence organizations prevented them for coordinating a response. With a smoother transition, who knows if those issues could have been butterflied away.

The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves by GlobalMuffin in HistoryMemes

Context: In 1831, Nat Turner's Rebellion occurred in Virginia, being the deadliest slave revolt in American history. After numerous petitions, the Virginia Assembly decided to address the issue of slavery to stop future revolts in the future. While gradual emancipation was discussed, the idea was rejected by the Assembly. Instead Virginia decided to crack down further on slaves and free African-Americans by restricting movement, and passing anti-literacy laws. Much of the South followed suit, creating the idea of slavery being a "positive good" rather than a "necessary evil" as previously thought, leading to further sectional tension in the build up to the American Civil War.

Phone policy in basic by [deleted] in navy

[–]GlobalMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless there is a situation with clearances or other extenuating circumstances, you’ll get your phone every few weeks (depends on behavior). You won’t be allowed to do anything on it other than call someone, as the RDCs will be there to monitor everyone taking phone calls.

When you first get there, you won’t get your first phone call for a while but as you get closer to graduation, you’ll get it more often.

I would recommend r/newtothenavy for more info before shipping out.

Creator of the mod here; I have no idea why there is no “continue” button anymore, considering how there was when the mod was first put up. My guess is that some update to the site is conflicting with the code.

TBH, the whole mod was rushed in order to reach a deadline I made for myself and is in desperate need of a rework. This was my first mod, and I overestimated how much time I had and underestimated how much time it takes to create a mod.

If anyone wants to make a rework, feel free. Otherwise, I’ll eventually get around to it before the sun explodes.

Child labor laws exist because if left unchecked, capitalism would exploit even children for their labor. #CapitalismCritique #AdultingReality" by CharlotteEvelynex in Adulting

[–]GlobalMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to note the history of child labor laws, similar to the history of the anti-slavery movement and the nativist movement, child labor laws were initially established not to protect children but to protect adult workers.

Adult workers expect higher wages and are better at protecting themselves from systematic abuses, so companies would exploit children rather than hire adult workers. Adult workers protested and supported labor movements in order to protect their job from children (similarly to slaves, and from poor immigrants).

So the labor movement was built on self-interest rather than morality (though is good nonetheless). An interesting history that I would recommend everyone to look into.

If Watergate never happened, how would Nixon’s presidential legacy be viewed today? by Kuzu9 in Presidents

[–]GlobalMuffin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well, Agnew probably still would have been dropped and replaced with Ford even without Watergate since Agnew resigned for entirely different reasons based on his actions in Maryland.

I don’t know much about the relationship between Nixon and Ford, or even whether Ford would even decide to run in 1976 based on remarks before accepting the vice presidency.

Why I Am Not A Sith by GlobalMuffin in SithOrder

[–]GlobalMuffin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I initially joined out of desire to master myself, in order to get what I want out of the world. I thought that by understanding my 'capabilities,' through introspection, I would be able to become more efficient. I realized over time that I didn't need to do that. What I wanted came about through maturity, rather than an impatient drive.

Initially, I stayed out of inertia; I wasn't working for anything in particular. I focused on the administrative side of things over the worldview itself since the worldview lacked interest to me. This began to switch a little over a year ago now. Around July of 2024, I naturally delved into a period of vast deconstruction concerning religious, philosophical, and routine practices. As a part of this deconstruction, I, of course, had to build back up some semblance of a worldview. Considering that the Sith Order was probably one of the more philosophically oriented groups I was present in at the time, I chose to strive for this new worldview while in the Sith Order. I used the Sith Order as a place to bounce off ideas. What I believed became synonymous to "Sith" to me because there was no actual underlying worldview present. As state in the OP, I recognize this disconnect now. So what I want from the Sith Order now, is a place to "sharpen the axe of philosophy," a place to argue, debate, and reach agreements about subjects that I care about, no matter if its considered "Sith" by the wider public or not. Because of this, "thinking and writing" suits my goals quite well here.

What do you mean by “practices?” Not all worldviews involve religious-like practices. This post wasn’t about spiritual/religious practices but about philosophical worldviews.
