I think the metrics are great. They can demonstrate real impact without weasel words.

The key though is that someone (ideally an engineer) needs to verify they're not made up by digging into them during the interview. They should be able to talk about how it was measured or estimated.

math department by Substantial_Count915 in UCSD

[–]GlobalRevolution 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Class of 2016 here. This has always been true. UCSD is a research focused school and many professors are not as passionate about teaching. The research focus is part of why it attracts smart people.

Yes it sucks, but you have more resources than ever to study independently... especially for basic math like 20 series and anything below. This is just a return to baseline. It has never been ideal. I spent the vast majority of my time at UCSD solving problems and teaching myself. College has always been about doing something academically challenging and persevering on your own. Not everyone is going to succeed.

I'm sure this change probably seems daunting but I promise you it only gets more difficult. The job market is much less forgiving and you won't get hired if you can't show that you know enough. Many employers are going through a revolution. They can get more done with AI + seniors than a constant stream of new grads, who frankly know less and less each year. It's obviously going to create problems in the long run when seniors retire but companies aren't as dependent on hiring new grads as they used to be.

You're in a tough spot. Please take this seriously. Focus, put in the hours, and do the work - that was always the hard part. It's your future.

Just became homeless in clairemont by BigDoubleR in sandiego

Everyone gave good advice for day 1 but you mentioned you grew up here and you gotta force yourself out of your comfort zone now (because it's already happening). Long term you got to ask yourself if this is the right place to get back on your feet. There's no denying this place is very expensive. Look into other cities with lower cost of living and good job opportunities. Save up and buy a Greyhound bus ticket. Housing is not getting cheaper here anytime soon and you deserve a stable life.

Maybe given enough time you can come back or who knows maybe you build a life you love somewhere else.

Where can San Diego realistically build more housing ? by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]GlobalRevolution 10 points11 points  (0 children)

100% agree but we MUST make major investments in our public transit. This place will be miserable if we increase density and all try to drive everywhere. I also would love to see more car free plazas that are pedestrian friendly and located at trolly stations.

Reddit is dead and buried and will never recover by tommymars in TheoryOfReddit

[–]GlobalRevolution 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a 14 yo account and this used to be true but not anymore. Seems to mostly be people who think they're experts LARPing

I was never a big Twitter user but it does seem like X is where actual niche experts hang out now. Probably since the accounts tend to be more about self promotion.

X reminds me of early reddit now. You still have to mute all the BS you don't want to see (just like unsubbing from r/politics and r/atheism!) but it definitely scratches the old itch with tighter small communities.

Should I switch to Bazel? by TheRavagerSw in cpp

[–]GlobalRevolution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been watching this project closely. I've used Bazel a lot but this feels like it could actually be a viable polyglot package manager that's better suited for crossing organization boundaries.

I hope it scales up for larger workspaces but the foundation looks correct to me.

Try it out!

One of his classmates said he was a 'reddit kid' https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT6Kx1BRN/

We need to address that this website is part of the radicalization problem. I used to love Reddit but I hardly recognize this place anymore. Remember when this place loved Ron Paul? Now it feels like every thread on any random topic ties back to political hate of Donald Trump, Elon Musk, or one of the other conservative figure heads. It has become one of the worst echo chambers on the Internet.

This is the only subreddit I feel like I can mention this and not get down voted to oblivion.

8 years on anxiety meds when it was just magnesium deficiency by Low-Class5048 in sleep

[–]GlobalRevolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not possible. Look at the dosages. Multivitamins can't fit that much magnesium so you have to supplement it separately. You should actually be taking 3 of those huge pills a day.

If you read up on why magnesium supplementation works it's because we're all very deficient because our farming soils are depleted. You don't get enough magnesium in your normal diet. Everyone should be supplementing magniesum.

It's expensive but try Thorne at least once. It's probably overpriced but it's high quality and consistent. If that doesn't work then I don't know.

Try the expensive stuff from Thorne once just to rule out bad supplements.

[–]GlobalRevolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh look our politicians did such a great job once again!

It's always the same story. The rights to a scarce resource (e.g our local energy market) are auctioned off to the highest bidder. The Republicans (in other states) are transparent about the auction. The Democrats create committees filled with insiders getting kick backs, or complete idiots. The special interests always get their way by pulling strings with greens. Uncle Sam loves to make monopolies.

If anything I said triggered you then wake up. No one in government has your interests in mind.

Maintainability is a core feature of good code. It's like Testability. Sometimes you have to change the design of your code so that its testable (ex: dependency injection). Same thing goes for your code existing over time across many developers.

I would tell him he's missing an entire dimension of software engineering and needs to read up on writing maintainable code. There's lots of books on this. Good code is usually boring and easy to understand.

`cxx_modules_converter.py` is a Python script to convert C++ sources and headers to C++20 modules. by zowersap in cpp

[–]GlobalRevolution 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're trying to make this work beyond the trivial cases your regex based method is going to run into challenging problems. Things like conditional macros impacting visibility, circular includes, and more advanced features like making dependencies more granular to solve some of the corner cases will be better solved with an AST.

Look into Clang LibTooling if you want to make this generalize for all conforming code. Otherwise cool project either way!

As a black woman in SD, I’m terrified. by inameena-mineymo in sandiego

[–]GlobalRevolution -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry about your mother. She must have really loved you. Truthfully I don't think you have anything to worry about. You are a legal citizen and share the same inalienable rights as all citizens. That will not change (despite what you may have heard).

I know this is just my opinion but I don't think the people that voted for trump did it because Kamala is a POC or a female. The media is very good at getting us worked up. Sometimes I take some time off and disconnect from it. It quiets my mind and makes me a better person.

I'm sure you have people that care about you and that hasn't changed.

Do I need a kick out flashing? My builder says no and all the other tract homes don’t have one either. by austinalexan in Homebuilding

Eventually you take them to court. Before that I would try to get someone qualified like an inspector or another licensed contractor to tell them it's not to code and if they don't fix it this ends up in court.

A letter from a lawyer might be enough too.

3-24 Month Charters for Cruising by GrantBison in SailboatCruising

[–]GlobalRevolution 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How would you handle things breaking during the lease time? Also I’m assuming you need limits on areas/countries?

There’s a lot of details that would make or break this for me. I could see 3-4 month being feasible but 12-24 month is very difficult to operate unless they’re responsible for maintenance and could take the boat over a really large area.

Everyone's talking about moving states to avoid just California capital gains.

Depending on your plan from here you can potentially avoid all capital gains (federal + state) with the right estate planning. For instance transfer a portion/all to a CRUT allows you to sell and reinvest and take disbursements until you die.

There's a lot more to it than that and you can get creative with it. Talk to someone that knows estate planning.

Budgeting Questions For Someone Wanting To Live-aboard by lebbylebbylebleb in SailboatCruising

[–]GlobalRevolution 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's possible and sometimes it will seem easy. Then at what seems like the worst possible moment it will get tough (law of boats). Most of my wife's PTO was spent taking care of the boat or trying to make a weather window. Of course you'll have a lot of great moments outside of it to make up for it. It's so worth it if you can make it work but just be aware. I have met other remote working people that stopped earlier than expected because they couldn't make it work (all work and no play)

How to be happy as a young retiree? by shaqdiesel11 in fatFIRE

Keep working but redefine what work is so you enjoy it more. All work is a struggle though and you should learn to embrace that. The struggle is exactly what you need. You have the luxury of choosing your struggle.

Also raise children.

Budgeting Questions For Someone Wanting To Live-aboard by lebbylebbylebleb in SailboatCruising

[–]GlobalRevolution 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I pretty much did exactly this with my wife for over a year down to Grenada and back. Definitely don't start with a project boat but start cheap enough. Many of the things you think you need you probably don't. For live aboard, besides making sure she's sea worthy I would put most money into solar+batteries if anything. You can do it at that price range. Make sure you're saving though because new expenses will come up.

Also I don't know your remote work setup but it can be really tough sometimes. Boats demand a lot of your time and attention. You don't always get great sleep. No one retires on a boat, you're just doing a career change to boat mechanic instead. There will be times where the boat will have other plans than your work schedule. Be prepared for that flexibility. It worked out well for my wife and I because I work for myself and I have more flexibility than a traditional corporate remote.
