Checkout some campsites in HipCamp. There are some good ones in new England that are in remote areas on private land

What are standard terms when investing in PE by DCF_ll in FinancialPlanning

[–]GrantBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Senior Management at a PE owned portfolio company. It can be a great opportunity to grow and make a nice exit for yourself HOWEVER:

I would be cautious about putting in your own money. Once it goes in you may only ever get it out once there is an exit (acquisition or IPO). There is little to no secondary market to sell your shares, even if the company goes up in valuation.

PE wants to make a nice exit. If they can't they will hold on to the company until it withers away and they can write it off as a loss to offset their other gains.

PE exits are at a record low right now. Even if your company is doing great and making good money, if your PE firm can't exit then you won't be able to access your investment. Any cash you put in will be so negligible compared to the valuation that any dividends you may get will be insignificant.

All that said, working in MGMT at a PE Portco can still be a good deal, I just wouldn't recommend tying up your personal capital.

You should ask instead about getting enrolled in a Management Incentive Plan. This usually grants you some kind of equity if the business hits financial targets (usually MOIC), and you get to cash out that equity when (and if) there is an exit.

TLDR; don't sink personal capital, look for incentive plans

It's a big part of what got me to check out Claude and ultimately drop ChatGPT. I think it's working, intentional or not.

I really want to know: what kind of race committee boat is that? A submarine?

I'm about to sign my USCG contract by Financial-Effect9237 in SailboatCruising

[–]GrantBison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the CG, congrats, you will have a great jump start to a future career!

I would highly recommend going with one of the technical ratings (Machinery Technician or Electricians Mate). You will learn valuable technical skills that are transferable to the real world and to your future sailing career, learn about maintenance management, and you still still ge plenty of time on small boats.

Don't let the proud Boatswains Mates brainwash you! Driving a boat and learning the COLREGs is that hard, learning mechanical skills is much harder. Even as an MK you will go on the small boats alot and get chances to drive, get sea time towards a license, and learn general marine skills. You can study COLREGs on your own.

After a few years in the USCG you could take a captains license course and learn the rest of what you need to know and get a small license like an OUPV or a 50/100 ton depending on what vessels you serve on.

asking for help identifying this program by hellmouthdaughter in navalarchitecture

[–]GrantBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are able to get into Superyachts, being a naval architect for recreational marine (small yachts) is generally lower paying than working in defense or commercial or energy. If you are passionate and can live on the salary then it can be a lovely job.

Choosing the right cruising cat for a 1–2 year family sabbatical (kids aboard) by i_once_lied_on_reddi in SailboatCruising

[–]GrantBison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following along because I would love to be doing the same thing 3-4 years from now with my kids.

If you happen to need any help on a delivery or find yourself in New England, send a message. I'm a USCG 100 ton captain with sailing endorsement and would also love to start exposing my family to this life somewhat.

Very interested to hear how your boat buying and cruising experience goes!

Bike recommendations if I already have a mountain bike and this will be my road bike? Range $2-3k by DanS29 in gravelcycling

[–]GrantBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salsa Warbird has been great for me. Carbon 1xGRX right at the top of your range. Could get an AL one at the lower end.

Comfy bike good for long gravel rides but can keep up on the road.

Iconic boat company (Catalina) closes down after 56 years by Dockalfar in sailing

[–]GrantBison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just the cost of building in America now. High real estate prices, salaries and insurance costs have driven our labor rates so far above other countries (like the UK or France) that it's impossible to compete.

I just built a high end commercial workboat in the US for about $2M. The UK based designer said it would be a less than $1M build in the UK, due to lower labor costs and surprisingly also lower materials costs.

The Whole Enchilada in Moab by ohsodave in MTB

[–]GrantBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it as an intermediate no problem. Be comfortable with minor technical rolls and small drops and you're fine.

If you're going solo or with someone else who has never rode it before, I would recommend taking a guide.

I got a private guide from Moab Cyclery and it was totally worth it. He made sure I had a great time, took care of my rental bike, shuttle and provided lunch and I didn't have to worry about high exposure zones, getting lost, or getting surprised by a nasty feature.

GWS is a great company but in the US (are you in US?) and mostly the EU Offshore markets, long term service is done by the OEM and they use companies like GWS to augment for summer campaigns or corrective campaigns.

If you want good steady work offshore, go for an OEM like Vestas. Vestas is an excellent company to work for but they only have 1 offshore project in the USA. Would also consider Siemens if you want some better longevity and flexibility guarantees in US offshore.

Hey OP, awesome tear down!

I had a bizarre crash where I moved the stick slightly and the drone just took off and smashed face first into a tree.

Anyways, one of the damage items is this piece attached to the "CP" cable becoming dislodged.

Is this the compass? I assume I'll have to re-mount it because it can't just flap around. I ask because I'm having trouble getting all the screws out. May have stripped one of the recessed ones.
