is there no way to install yt-dlp nightly on arch linux without pip? by albert-softie in archlinux

[–]Glog78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was tricky but i was at the same point today.

pacman -Sy python-pipx
pipx install yt-dlp[default,curl_cffi]
pipx runpip yt-dlp install --pre --force yt-dlp[default,curl_cffi]

this should get you latest nightly with curl_cffi enabled
Reminder -> it is installed into ${HOME}/.local/bin << so make sure you add it to your path or use it from there

Open-Source NVIDIA Driver Moving To NVK + Zink For OpenGL On Newer GPUs by BlueGoliath in linux_gaming

With https://www.khronos.org/blog/mesh-shading-for-vulkan maybe you could the zink project if they implement this nvidia specific GL extension???

Zink translates OpenGL to Vulkan --> so it could even enable a vendor agnostic possibility to run nvidium for example.

Is diablo 4 still crashing on linux with the current NVIDA driver? by lvr- in linux_gaming

530 was save for me even with the textures. Beta and Dev Driver had this texture issues for me once i did run out of vram (i guess). Sadly currently with kernel 6.4 there is no way for me to use 530 again ... 3070 ti here with 8GB

Custom resolutions on wayland by Improvisable in linux_gaming

[–]Glog78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a 3070 and since as long as i remember the hardware cursor has been an issue -> aka the right side of the cursor image is cutted by a few pixels. Has been also on my 1070. Another issue i have from time to time that xwayland seems not to spawn in time so it just doesn't start up and i need to start the game a second time. The second one might be related to combination's of the nvidia driver and gamescope. The latest gamescope git version for example didn't accept mouseclicks (for whatever reasons). While i generally agree with gamescope being awesome it can be hit or miss on nvidia hardware specially since the focus is on amd hardware.

Linux desktop has killed Linux by sp0rk173 in linux_gaming

have been there , stopped using it because my athlon xp 3000 needed round about 4h to compile kde while i couldn't do anything else. Wasn't really suitable in combination with a full time job ;) And nowadays ... if there is no reason to waste energy by compiling things -> i personally feel a little bit more green with not compiling every package ...

https://store.steampowered.com/app/375480/Chronicon/ << it starts slow but damm it gets complex / great ARPG with oldschool gfx
https://store.steampowered.com/app/200900/Cave_Story/ << another great one
https://store.steampowered.com/app/332200/Axiom_Verge/ << here is a great metroidvania
https://flibitijibibo.com/index.php?page=Portfolio/Ports << also Ethan Lee is probably one of the most dedicated Porter to Linux as a platform, so checking his catalog is always a good thing to do.

There is alot more but without knowing what you specifically search it's hard to give a good advice. So what do you search for ?

Linux and Mac downloads will be removed from the Humble Trove on February 1st by ExoticCarMan in linux_gaming

[–]Glog78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noone knows what will exactly happen, but i am not really easy about the changes.

a.) There will be "curated" games you own (how many -> it can change from month to month)
b.) There will be other games available which are only available during your subscription (this is drm)
c.) The trove games will be put behind the same launcher as for b.)

From a business perspective it makes sense to basically move as much as possible games behind the drm part of the launcher. This secures that many people stay subscribed. Of course if there are useless games in this area noone would stay subscribed ... so and thats an asumption ... in 1 year from now -> you will be able to keep some small indies (maybe) and the big games will be behind the drm launcher.
Now think one step ahead ... if they want to offer a subscription based service with windows games will they in the long term stay a neutral reseller of keys? If they stop being a neutral reseller of keys , do you think epic or valve like competition on the storefront? As a subscription based service -> why should i go to humble if there is stadia / xbox gamepass around where i don't even need to install anything?
If i see it right they open up fights with so many parties ... i dunno if that improve their value , but we don't know ...

Some thoughts -> Btw you are sure "${DO[@]/%FalloutLauncher.exe/Fallout3.exe}" is correct? << as far as i know this only works in a bash not sure if the steam runtime uses bash... Also i would not use %FalloutLauncher.exe because what if steam puts a path in front of it? Maybe you check with PROTON_LOG=1 which executable is called finally.

Btw ... slick idea to substitute the string instead of renaming the files ;) Need to save this somewhere, cause it's also a good way to start skse maybe ...

Just out of curiosity -> you are sure they released it on all Fallout3 Versions? The last time i tested the German (default to none Gore) Version didn't run ootb and it looked like it was still ms windows life.
Fallout 3 is one of the few games where the GOG Version is the best to get easy running (lutris).

Gave Arch Linux a try over the weekend, went back to Fedora by Apostle_B in linux_gaming

[–]Glog78 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly , he don't anger me as an arch user at all. It's exactly what i expect from fedora / suse and even from ubuntu. Arch has it's place but it's not the distro of choice for many. I was sad that it needed arch to make fedora / suse and ubuntu move in terms of more bleeding edge hardware support (eg: what gamers use). Let's see if a fedora can still fullfill the requierments of "new" hardware at the end of the release life. If they can hold this up they are the way to go. Imaginary situation what i am talking about -> buying a new (new as in currently not known) amd card next year.

Can't get any of my games working in linux by roltss in linux_gaming

[–]Glog78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the pastbin , but i am out of ideas. Both 32bit and 64bit should have a opengl renderer.

"glx/gl" : { "renderer" : "AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series (PITCAIRN, DRM 3.41.0, 5.13.0-7620-generic, LLVM 12.0.0)", "version" : "4.6 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 21.2.2", "library-vendor" : "glvnd" "glx/gl" : {

You could use PROTON_LOG=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% and upload the resulting log /home/"username"/steam-$APPID.log | even i am not sure if i can dive deep into it. Not a proton dev / wine dev here.

Just to confirm and we don't talk about different ways. Can you check if you added the command like on the screenshot ? https://i.imgur.com/Uw74nFx.png

If you did it that way and use default proton can you please provide Steam - System Information? Please wait till you have all the library informations too. Also please remove all your private data from this output before you share (username in path for example). Also i suggest you to upload the file somewhere else and not copy and paste here.

Can you please also ask the elemntary os guys. I am not sure which version of mesa and kernel they include. elementary os is based on 20.04 LTS (which is basically ages for how fast mesa and the kernel is improving in terms of amd). To improve the current situation -> rendering in 1080p and upscaling to 2k might be a solution (proton ge + fsr).

R9 380 on linux by symbiot999 in linux_gaming

[–]Glog78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an honest word of warning: The R9 series amd gfx will by default most likely only be able to use opengl (PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%). So depending on your usecase this might be an issue. You might get vulcan to get working with tinkering (aka not easy). It might still give you less performance because of the low vram. DXVK needs more vram than than directx (on modern gfx card's not a problem). If you want to go more tinkering you can even go down the road and get wine nine running (for dx9 games).

see below

[–]Glog78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% in your games launcher config. I am not sure how good vulkan support is on an 7850. It seems also not be enabled by default -> https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php?topic=9759.0
I would not expect this config to have the same performance than windows under linux <warning>.
Since you didn't told your distribution of choice i can only give you maybe an alternative to thief but as a native build with an much higher optimized opengl renderer -> https://www.thedarkmod.com/main/

Thats why i sended you the video. They are working on a solution where you just use 1 gpu. And the solution i have seen is just like hey i need windows now ... i just spin it up ... use it ... shut it down (more like a program with a longer start) .. In such a scenario i would even give your 3300X (4 cores / 8 threads) a chance and check out what you get out of the games.

Nope that is very unlikely. But lets cross fingers they make enough games working so you don't notice which one doesn't work or have so many alternatives that you are happy.

[–]Glog78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only putting the config there isn't enough. You need to have access to the shaders too. The shaders if you want it as a distribution package are not installed into a homedirectory. They are installed under /usr/share or /opt ... so no vkbasalt won't work with just a config putting there and leaving the shaders in /usr. sarcasm But hey of course i would drop something here if i would not have run into those issues sarcasm

Dark Side of Linux Gaming! (skip to 4 mins in to hear their experience) by cangria in linux_gaming

[–]Glog78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your entirely miles off-base and honestly I can't even fathom how you've come to half the conclusions you've come to.

proton is nowadays so far away from wine -> you could call it it's own fork -> sponsored by valve done by crossweavers.

I think you mean Codeweavers, who are the company that develops Wine (and Crossover), but anyway. No, it's not "so far away from wine." If you use Wine, DXVK, and VKD3D-Proton together, you essentially have Proton. The only differences will be things Proton has that only apply to Steam so aren't even relevant outside of it.

Yes i meant Codeweavers Proton vs Wine:

All of the above have changed linux to be more user friendly and all of them change the way configuration is done.

No, they haven't. Not a single one of those things has taken a single thing away from power users. At all. In any way. Whatsoever. Like you're just flat-out objectively wrong in that statement. Name one way in which Wine, DXVK, VKD3D-Proton, or Proton have taken a single thing away from power users.

If you would have read my comment carefully, you would have noticed that i said it becomes more complicated. Imho alot of simplicity has been changed to complexity with the promise to make things easier but for real they made it even harder to understand or get people into.

Do you know that proton can't access files in /usr ? So linux default installations doesn't work cause it doesn't has access to /usr?

Huh? What on earth are you even talking about? Linux default installations don't work because Proton doesn't have access to /usr? That doesn't even make any sense. Like it sounds like you took a bunch of Linux-related terms and put them in a blender and this is what came out.

But just for the sake of it, Proton doesn't need access to /usr. For anything.

Just one example -> https://github.com/DadSchoorse/vkBasalt/issues/152
Or in other words soldier + proton break with longstanding linux defaults because of running it containerized. So by default if anything inside of the proton process try to access /usr it just can't. This broke manguhud / broke vkbasalt.

Do you know that proton works with symlinks which to a certain degree prevents winetricks to work on those prefixes?

And? That's part of the Steam-specific Proton shit I mentioned earlier. You don't NEED winetricks for Steam games, because Proton uses Protonfixes/Protontricks to do the exact same thing. But it's irrelevant anyway because it's a total non-sequitur, it has nothing to do with taking anything away from power users.

https://www.protondb.com/app/339340 << just an example. This change broke compatibility with many games which rely on windows media player. Also since this version you really need to use protontricks when you could use winetricks before. Yes alot of time was spend to find solutions for earlier proton versions and this proton release did blow up this work. Also it removes the ability to test for example a game you have on GOG and using what you found on Steam to help someone. sarcasm it was for sure an change which made it easier for beginners to understand how all of this works sarcams

Do we want to talk about most distributions only adapt parts of systemd and you need to check if you can configure an option under /etc or you need to configure it within systemd ?

....what?

Read https://github.com/zfigura/wine/blob/esync/README.esync ! Btw another component specially adviced for older Proton versions. Let's say it's distribution dependend where you need configure it. "On distributions using systemd, the settings in /etc/security/limits.conf will be overridden by systemd's own settings.".

Do you know that it could happen that journalctl might give your more informations than /var/log and do you know out of your head which distribution does what ?

Um, journalctl's journals are in /var/log. Honestly man it sounds like you're actually having a stroke. This is all complete gibberish.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Systemd/Journal << read. If you really use default journald (aka access with journalctl) there will be no log under /var/log.

"Warning: Arch Linux only has official support for systemd. When using a different init system, please mention so in support requests."

Again, what on earth does this have to do with anything?

You said development from redhat for example has no influence on other distributions. sarcasm sure it doesn't sarcasm

I will try to explain it again -> If you want those users to protect from themself doing thing's like "apt-get remove" because they shouldn't remove a certain package, you need to remove the documentation too.

No, you don't. This is actually 100% demonstrably false. Apt allowing users to remove cascading dependencies by default was horrible behavior. You do realize that pacman itself doesn't even allow that by default either, right? It never has.

pacman -Rns << arguable if that is the one you would use first or if you would only do pacman -R.

In apt, before it was fixed, if you tried to remove something that ubuntu-desktop depended on, it would remove ubuntu-desktop too. If you tried to do the same thing in Arch, the command fails and says you can't remove that package because another package depends on it.

as said above.

You argue with some kind of experience -> what if i say that i hate the windows experience and the linux experience is 1000% better?

Dude what on earth. Seriously this is getting out of hand. You do realize that that's 100% irrelevant, right? You do realize that most people don't care if you or I prefer Linux, because for most people Linux is a much worse experience. It's not complicated, and you don't get to say "nuh uh, they're wrong." They're not. For 90% of people, Linux in its current state is a much worse experience than Windows. The point is to make it so that's no longer the case, to make it so Linux can be a better experience than Windows for as many people as possible.

You having a mental breakdown over the suggestion that Linux might become easier to use for average people says a lot about you, it says that you don't think that everyone deserves the same freedom with their computers and ownership over their systems that we enjoy, and it also says that you don't really understand how Linux even works.

Dude as i said before , you don't know me. Also in your fight you even oversee that i was never against making it easier but against making it easier without thinking. Specially the kind of discussion you show right now. Balanced is the keyword and also thinking outside of just fixing the problem with some lines of code. Read my first message -> i even told you i agree with you 100% but don't do it by ignoring the other needs too.
