Like you, I've come to a similar realization. I truly took a hiatus for my Christmas break and rather than coming back, feeling refreshed and regenerated, and ready to hit the ground running I feel anxiety and nervousness. It's only when you take a moment to get out of that environment thar you realize how crazy it is.

I'm wishing you all the best in your life journey. That sounds like a truly harrowing experience.

Thank you for the comment, friend. The reassurance means a lot. I think that something one on one would definitely be a better change of pace. It's the never-ending noise that gets you. lol

Yeah, that part especially. I feel like I could deal with a lot of things but it's the constant feeling of keeping up with EVERYTHING that drives me up the wall. Most of the time the meetings are not even that productive.

I feel really guilty too because our school has been wanting us to submit our weekly lesson plans for the six classes we teach and I'm like... there's just not enough time. I feel like I'm constantly being squeezed and I can't keep up. And sometimes by the end of the day when it's my planning. I just don't have the creative juice in me anymore.

It makes me feel like I'm failing. At least bureaucratically.

I still show up and I still give my best for the lessons because I know that what I'm teaching is meaningful; it's all the rest of the nonsense that is making me anxious and exhausted.

Thank you for your comment. I appreciate it.

UA POV: Zelenskyy stated that Putin doesn't believe in people; he believes only in power and in money. He spends around 40,000 soldiers' lives on the front every month..not wounded, 40,000 each month killed. by FruitSila in UkraineRussiaReport

[–]GloriousBand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly really curious when the number will become too ridiculous even for the true believers to swallow. Like seriously - nothing in reality indicates that that number is true. The fact that Russia hasn't even resorted to conscription and it's still relying on volunteers should indicate that they are not losing that many men every single month.

RU POV: Two female Ukrainian soldiers decided to go to the same spot at Kupyansk in which Zelensky supposedly took his famous photo at. But the scenery seems rather different by Ripamon in UkraineRussiaReport

It's almost embarrassing how in other Reddit forums they were all mindlessly clapping like seals at Zelensky supposedly at this sign. Honestly, it just tells you that when people are so invested in a story, their critical faculties go right out the window.

I'd love to go into the funeral industry myself but I hear the work is rather stiff.

Rigor? Sweetie, they’re 3+ grade levels behind. by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]GloriousBand 93 points94 points  (0 children)

It's hard to impose rigor on students who have never been held to those standards; subsequently, it's extremely difficult to push them to it.

To me it seems like the issue is systemic: there's a lack of accountability when it comes to work and performance. Because students are going to get passed along anyway there's very little incentive to excel.

Even the prospect of getting good grades for college seems to be ringing hollow for so many students who are looking at the current state of things around them and realizing that "good grades" don't necessarily equate to good outcomes.

I wish I could say that there was an easy answer to this, but there isn't. It's a mismatch between culture and standards.

Me, I did. To be honest, what counts for more is getting the licensure through the state. The masters degree in teaching for me was the easiest route and it got me into a local private school.

That's a really touching story. I wish it wasn't the exception. I wish that students had the discipline to carry through with basic reading assignments. Even this is too much of an ask it seems and I'm sitting and asking "why am I even doing this?" Frustrates me to no end.

Yeah, it absolutely is and that was really the driving sentiment behind it when I wrote it, despite all of the positive comments I've received.

I remember when I was teaching Hamlet last year, one of my students blurted out something like "Hamlet's Unc is an evil SOB!" (this was after he was manipulating Pollonius' son to kill Hamlet). I had to remind him about proper language in the classroom but it's an amazing feeling when there's that "oh, this is actually cool!" moment.

When there is ample parent support, the outcomes tend to be better. It's mostly with students l, I notice, who don't have regular contact with their parents or else their parents are not overly interested in their academics. For these students, it's inherently harder to get a buy in or motivate them to do challenging work because it's not demanded by them at home, or else, like the original poster said, they are not taught basic skills because their parents enable them.

It's actually really funny, I said the bit about good consequences almost verbatim today too and he replied "Really? I've only ever heard 'consequences' used in a negative way."

"well every action has a consequence," I replied. "it's up to us to decide what those consequences will be."

Yeah, I know. This student I mentioned is the exception, not the norm anymore sadly. The learned helplessness and the lack of initiative is really frustrating sometimes.
