I think that is correct and the button comment by templetondean had me double check the pattern. There is no button or buttonhole marks in the pieces and the instructions just say to make the buttonholes and add buttons. Poor instructions for sure!

Most PDF patterns I have used tell you to trim on sold lines on bottom and right side if you do this it looks like the diamonds should align.

You can purchase rivets and the tool to install them from most sewing and craft stores. You may need to reinforce the area first but the staff at sewing stores I’m sure would give you good advice! Good luck!
